Yeah, I was going to say, I MSTed half of 50 Shades before caving, and it was really fucking bad! I say this as someone who read over thirty Xanth novels as a tiny, so believe me, I know bad. That was a case where the book won, and I couldn't finish.

And I just watched the vid and aw! I actually found it kinda cute! People complain about the whole safewords thing, but it actually made me feel much more at ease. I'd much rather deal with the "preachy" consent talk than a 50 Shades.

Honestly I don't quite get why this bit bothered folks.

Yes that is partly why I don't prioritise F!S as much as I did before.

Re: How do you cover a heating vent when closing it is not enough?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-24 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Don't cover vents, period. It's just bad for obvious reasons, including those mentioned by other anons.

As for cooling, there's no good way to cool the room in question outside of getting a window air conditioning unit or fan, and you mentioned the roommate might be bothered by the noise (which sounds ridiculous, btw--if she wants the temperatures she likes whether warm or cold, she could learn to deal with noise.) If the heat issue is mainly a matter of sleeping, though, try sticking sheets or blankets in the fridge before bed.

... ymmv but I've definitely inadvertently become sexually attracted to things as a defense mechanism

something in my brain goes "oh no, too scary! ... I'd better have sex with it."

whaaat even. I had no idea what was hidden in those books all these years lol

(Anonymous) 2015-01-24 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I never get involved in fandom anyway, but for Dragon Age I now actively avoid reading anything on tumblr or youtube (not a bad practice in general) because there are simply too many irritating people talking.

Yeah, in my case, the gameplay of RPGs just tends not to be my thing. I like puzzles and platforming, and I LOATHE combat. Random encounters are the WORST. Plus I'm really bad at things like weapon, armor, and party management.

Also, I don't own the correct consoles, and probably never will. I own DA:O but didn't get far, just because I didn't have the console and the combat turned me off.

I can't even watch Let's Plays, because the games are so big and with so many different paths! I'm byte-blocked!

Yeah, that relationship is actually worrisome for a variety of reasons despite the surface-level cuteness. The age gap is troubling, definitely, since it's been established that the ghosts don't mature physically or mentally in the dream bubbles (in fact, the longer they've been there, the more stunted and trapped in their mentality they've become).

Plus there's the fact that Meenah is pretty much the only one Vriska has, and Vriska is afraid of being alone. So she's behaving like a sycophant and trying to mold her entire personality around Meenah -- her pattern is becoming obsessed with something or someone and then modeling her personality off them. (Mindfang is the most obvious influence, but there was the fairy thing with Tavros and her Nic Cage fixation when she was interested in John.) Even if the age gap isn't a big deal in troll culture or whatever, I don't think Vriska and Meenah are equals in this relationship -- and that kind of balance HAS been established as important, even in troll relationships.

So, I don't know -- I think Hussie probably had these issues in mind when he paired Vriska and Meenah up. The relationships between the characters in Homestuck tend to be pretty complex, and sometimes downright unhealthy.

Re: How do you cover a heating vent when closing it is not enough?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-24 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Regardless of what kind of heating system it is, covering vents is usually considered a fire hazard and the building would no longer be up to code if a tenant did so. The landlord or management in question could get in serious trouble if they were ever under review for insurance reasons.

I fully expect the show to go there too, but right now I'm just going to ignore it. I do want them to make up and be close again, though. They would be so much happier if they could get back on the same page; they're so good at supporting one another.

I can't even blame you because I heard Mack died (which...didn't quite happen) and freaked out and took a while to catch up. Never in a million years did I think Tripp would die. When I found out I was angry, too; he was definitely my favorite character in season one (well, besides Fitz and Simmons) and I assumed he was going to stick around for a long time. I would've rather what's his face or Ward died too. (I actually said this to a friend. Even the what's his face part...I have no clue what his name is.)

It's true! A lot of people forget that actually, those books were really fucked up; I think because they read them early.

I'm a bit sore because let's just say I went through a lot as a kid, and Piers Anthony was my first exposure to anyone discussing child molestation and rape... and he talked about it as fun and games and teeheehee. So I've never quite forgiven him for that.

Try Sparktober! It's an annual fic fest devoted to Sparky (Sheppard/Weir).

Some good Sparky writers are Havocthecat and mylittleredgirl.

I have also written a handful of Sparky fics though do not claim to be any good at it. :)

Re: So... Manslamming

(Anonymous) 2015-01-24 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's unique to men, but it's more likely men are conditioned to do it. it's a matter of confidence and socialization. we socialize women to shrink back, to move, to accommodate others– there isn't the same sort of pressure on men to do that.

of course there are jerks from all walks of life, and some of it is cultural conditioning, but it doesn't really harm anyone to talk about the way genders are conditioned to act in generalized terms.

[S] GAME OVER really took me by surprise, but then, that's because I spent a long time away from the internet and had no idea the MEGAPAUSE had ended, and I'd forgotten how brutal the author can be when it comes to what happens to the characters.

Also, Vriska's back! :D

So, anyway, I still have some faith in the comic's ability to surprise me.

There are a bunch of floor exercises in Pilates that cover a range of intensities. You could probably find some videos on youtube for free.

If she can still stand (without jumping) then she can do squats and wall-sits. Sit ups if you hold her ankles, pushups from the knees.

They're not as thrilling as bouncing around on your feet, but she can put on some music and give it a go.

There's a smidge. I mean, Tom/Harry is the most obvious slash paring for them both. THEY ARE EVEN IN PRISON TOGETHER OMG.

Almost everything Torch wrote is Harry/Tom and is good.

Hey man, I don't blame you. I love combat, but past a certain point (especially with RPG's) it can get very tedious. Some games have equipment that can turn off random encounters, but not many, IIRC. (I THINK Xenosaga did?) It really depends on the game for me, but I tend to actually like customizing weapons and armor, and quite liked DA:O's system because of the amount of control it gave me, but again...it's a lot of work and can get old. Especially since these games tend to be over 60, 80 (even 100) hours.

(You said you like puzzles and platforming...have you tried Portal? I know, most everyone has heard of Portal by now, this is probably a dumb question.)

The Let's Play thing is killer. I know, I wanted to watch Let's Plays of some of Mass Effect's DLC because I couldn't download it, but I couldn't watch much of it... There's just too much personalization with these games, not being able to make your own decisions defeats the pupose for me. It's good for those who want to experience it themselves, but if you aren't able to play then it makes things difficult and frankly, boring.

Like, I know that's from Firefly, but in this context the idea of Adria acting motherly to Jennifer Keller is very disturbing.
