Re: tw rape mention, dehumanization

i kind of feel like a bad person for saying this but i wish it were socially acceptable to refer to rapists with "it" pronouns

Re: tw rape mention, dehumanization

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
why on earth?

Re: tw rape mention, dehumanization

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
because rapists are below subhuman scum in my eyes and i feel gross even considering them people

Re: tw rape mention, dehumanization

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that all rapists should be destroyed, but it's an important point of principle that they are human beings, because otherwise it's harder to recognize people who are rapists.

Re: tw rape mention, dehumanization

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
But they are. This isn't to stand up for them by any means, but when you start thinking of rapists are not human, it's the beginning of denial that humans are capable of acts like this. Denial feels more comfortable, but it's not the truth.

This. Humans do monstrous things, but to dehumanize them is to make them a "special category" and they're not. Sadl the could be our uncle, or our teacher, or the dude who works at the supermarket.

Re: tw rape mention, dehumanization

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Except they're not. Especially with the broader definitions of rape.

Rape is something a person can talk themselves into, or fail to talk themselves out of.

And that would change what, exactly?

Re: tw rape mention, dehumanization

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think that seems counter productive. It might perpetuate the myth that rapists are easily identified monsters who "look" like rapists. In reality, a rapist can be that nice guy who runs a charity, has a wife and kids and who is well respected in his community. When people think of rapists as creatures, it makes it harder for them to believe that "nice" and respected people can be rapists (and they obviously can be)

"In reality, a rapist can be that nice guy who runs a charity, has a wife and kids and who is well respected in his community."

and with those "nice guy" rapists, the community rallies around them, the news reports focus on how great they were otherwise, and they get off scott free

NA

right, but that's because people refuse to believe that they did it, not because we have not sufficiently dehumanized them

i don't see how the proposal of OP would improve things

(sorry if you were just adding on to what AYRT said and not disagreeing) (the internet is confusing)

Re: tw rape mention, dehumanization

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Well...yes, that was my point. Many people view rapists as being a certain kind of person (you know, the greasy drifter who lurks in dark alleys) and because they view rapists as monsters, they're often less willing to convict "nice guy" rapists and, as you say, they get off scott free

Upon re-reading your comment, I can't tell if you were disagreeing or agreeing with me. If you were just elaborating on my comment then I apologize

Re: tw rape mention, dehumanization

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. IMO, the instinct to characterize people who commit crimes like this as "monsters" is part of the detachment process. They're horrible acts, they don't seem like something a human could do because to think otherwise is frightening. You're surrounded by humans! So therefore the people who rape, kill, etc. are something less than human.

The sad truth is, they're not. They're terrible people, but they're fully human.

Re: tw rape mention, dehumanization

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, rapists are human and when you try to remove that element, it makes it harder for people to believe that people who may be considered upstanding leaders in their community are also rapists. That's part of what makes it so hard to convict some people

Re: tw rape mention, dehumanization

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't that make the problem worse, though? People already think of rapists as something other than human, which is why they find it so difficult to believe that people they know-- human people who come from good Christian families, etc. etc.!-- could possibly be rapists. Because everyone knows rapists are monsters, not college boys who fingerbang a drunk girl when she's passed out and can't consent.

Re: tw rape mention, dehumanization

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
Precisely. The "rapists are inhuman monsters" meme is a very big part of how rape culture perpetuates itself.

Nobody ever says "Rape is just fine", they always say "That wasn't really rape" or "He couldn't be a rapist" BECAUSE OF THE WHOLE MONSTER/SUBHUMAN/SCUM/EVIL IDEA.

Yes, I'm saying people like the thread OP are contributing to rape culture. It's true. Stop trying to help, you are bad at it.

Re: tw rape mention, dehumanization

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
You shouldn't do this because to dehumanize someone is to strip them of their agency. And thus it reduces rape from a horrific crime to the equivalent of a scared dog biting a man. Rapists are people. It's just that some people are awful.

Not me. I know trans folks who use 'it' pronouns, and while I don't, people HAVE called me 'it' before. I would not wish it on anybody. Not even my rapists.

I'll go one step further than the anons above me: when you think "rapists are monsters," and you add "I'm not a monster," that helps with "what I did wasn't rape." This is something that comes up again and again for rapists--a lot of them don't see what they did as qualifying as rape.

Especially the "incel" crowd who think rape is "okay" because evil womins don't give them a fair chance to get their junk wet. They scare the hell out of me.

Not sure, but I'm familiar with the robot crowd on 4chan. Honestly, that's far worse than /b/ to me, because at least you can assume b is just trolling. These guys despise women in the most disturbing way. That they think women never have issues finding men and could "date" anyone in a second (They confuse empty one night stands with dating) and whine about how women don't want "to use guys like walking dildos" is just mind numbing.

go for it if it makes you feel better, but if you want it to be a widespread thing then it seems counter productive if you want rapists to actually be put in jail. a lot of rapists don't "act/look like rapists" so people would probably just stick even closer to their preconceived notions about rapists because they believe that monsters should act a certain way.
