Representation is great, but their relationship in particular and the show in general were poorly written. You're not obliged to like bad thinks just because they are progressive. Having the guts to give the main character a same sex love interest was freaking awesome. Unfortunately the show was not.

Eh.

It's okay to not like it. As long as you don't stray into the "this is objectively awful and no one should be happy about it" territory.

You don't have to like it...i'm almost in the same boat as you, and while I really loved it, I do see how there's a lot to be desired when it comes to actual bi representation. Don't let anyone tell you how you feel about it.

It's okay not to like things. Sadly, since representation is rare, you have less to choose from.

Look at it this way: I by far dislike how the the majority of on-screen m/f romances are written, but since there's so many, there's bound to be a few I like.

But, if representation is rare, you're sort of stuck with what you've got, and it doesn't make you a bad person for not liking. it.

Just because you have something in common with something else doesn't mean you're obligated to support it. If someone says that you're self hating just because you don't ship a fictional couple then, well, that's pretty fucking insane. I'm a lesbian and there are lesbian canon couples that I don't care for. It happens.

Hey, don't feel bad, OP. I think it's kind of fucked up, how we're expected to adore any scrap of representation given to us, regardless of how we actually FEEL. Just because something hits your demographic buttons doesn't mean it hits your EMOTIONAL ones, you know?

There's a reason it took me until just a couple years ago to start finding queer stories I actually LIKED. Just because it supposedly represented me didn't mean I ever connected with it!

Don't even feel bad OP. I'm in almost the same boat and I'll be goddamned if I ever see this series and its ending as anything other than a total disappointment.

Though it does suck that you can't say that without some jackass thinking you only hated it because you ship Makorra. Makorra sucked.

The boxes you check on the census do not dictate what you will or will not like.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
All bisexual female poc must ship Korrasami. It is law. Get crackin' on that fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I have never watched the show. I have friends who are major, major Korrasami shippers, so I've heard a lot about this.

I think there are plenty of reasons to dislike Asami, or dislike the two characters together, whatever else there is going on.

I'm certainly not obligated by my personal history to like every interracial het ship. Why should you like every bi ship?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Stop worrying so much about not liking a popular thing. Just keep it to yourself. I actually really hated TLoK in its entirety, but when people ask me what I thought of the ending I just tell them that I didn't keep up with the show, but was happy that the endgame pairing was femmeslash. Even though I didn't find Korrasami to be especially compelling, it's a big deal to a lot of people and I really don't see the point in farting all over their good time tbh.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
This is kind of why I hate the tumblrish discourse that makes the importance of representation about how minorities are all horribly, dreadfully starved and have to rummage through scraps to find anything halfway decent, which they hold and treasure no matter how meager it is. It's so over the top that it implies anyone who isn't that desperate isn't a REAL [insert minority group represented in the work]

I'm the opposite of you, haha. I like Korrasami because I just really ship them together, and have since the first season. I feel like sometimes people act like the only reason us shippers like Korrasami is because "bisexual POC representation"! I'm not shipping them for the sjw points, like at all. (Although I am a bi woman, and do find f/f ships appealing.)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Uhh you do know you're not under any obligation to like any character for whatever reason, from you didn't see the chemistry to you thought so-and-so's nose was distracting?

Why would his tumblr post make you feel bad? I just recall it saying yes it's canon, try not to use het lens when you look at it (presumably, when Asami compliments Korra and Korra blushes, don't assume that's just sisterly friendship purely because they are the same gender etc)? I'm not in fandom so never memorized that blog post, but I don't recall anything particularly shocking in it.

I thought Korra/Asami was an interesting turn, but I wish they'd had more scenes together, including another scene or two that suggested they were developing feelings for one another. I liked it fine overall, though I'm not freaking out about it for the characters. That being said, I am so glad to see a canon lesbian pairing in a popular Western cartoon - whether or not you like the pairing, that DOES mean a lot.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-01-30 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I've not seen the ending yet, but I'm just not into the notion that just because I'm bi, I have to fawn over every bi character in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Don't feel bad. My sister is a lesbian and she didn't care for it either. I personally am fine with in general, but I still feel disgusted that they backtracked and said it was 'totally there from the start'. I mean, you make commentary for season one and say "Those kids were meant for each other(Word for word) and then say they *never* meant for it to happen and shipped "Korrasami from the start before any of you!"

It's an obvious lie and just comes off as backtracking in order to get more praise. That they used a ten second handhold to claim they were paving the way for LGBTQ representation in media didn't sit well with me either. Like they were doing barely any effort and claiming they did so much more.

Because bi and black isn't all you are. You don't have to love it just because it might appeal to your demographic. It doesn't make you self-hating.

Text: I am bisexual. I am a person of color. It irks me that I have to state those details about myself before I can reveal my secret: I… Did not care for the ending at all. I don’t like the pairing. I don’t like the “development.”

And I feel so sick about having to feel this way. Why am I not happy? According to everyone els, I shoud be. Representation and all that. But I’m not. I feel so alone. People are even telling me it’s because I suffer from “self-hate”. Those who don’t know me just call me a Makorra shipper for not liking it.

and Bryan’s tumbr post just made me feel so much worse.

tl;dr am bi&black, hated the ending, feel like shit for hating it bec apparently that makes me a self-hating homophobe or something

That sucks, OP. I love Korrasami to pieces, but if you don't, then you don't, and unless you're going around trashing the pairing and its fans on their own blogs and forums (which I doubt you are), then no one has the right to give you shit about it.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
i feel ya, op. i hate when fandom acts like i'm obligated to like/hate characters because we're the same race/sexual orientation/gender/etc. as well. the show was poorly written, and i'm not about to backpat the writers for shit writing, plain and simple. representation is awesome, but we aren't obligated to like or support all representation ever.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Korrasami is just plain awful, that's why.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Dear OP,

It's okay not to like it. Completely absolutely okay. Just because representation exists, it does not mean you are obliged to like it.

I am sorry that people have been such dicks to you about it. Please do not hate yourself. Your feelings are completely valid and you are allowed to have them.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Your life gets to be more explicit than a Nick cartoon could ever be (even more fortunately, your life isn't written by a couple of white dudes), so alas, the show could never convey the sort of story that would satisfy you. It really should be the case that such cartoons exist, though. It's a shame that they don't. At least take comfort that they got away with something that'll mean a lot to other people.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
OP it's okay that you don't like the ending

what's not okay is the way you've formatted this secret, please never write your text in chunks separated by a figure again
