IA, I see a lot of fanart that gives female characters massive breasts and it doesn't even need to be porn. I don't like it either (I'd rather the physical appearance be accurate; they're fine as is) but I know this is a common thing that isn't going away.

Annnnnnd plenty of fanart of Western video games with hugely muscular, grizzled male protagonists draws them as waify bishonen instead, or de-ages them 15-20 years, particularly in porn.

I don't really get it either - why not drawn porn of a character you're attracted to, instead of changing a character you're clearly not attracted to into something you are - but it's as old as the internet and both fangirls and fanboys do it.

It's not just western video games /gets flashbacks of all those doujinshi with shota-esque Cloud.

But yeah, works in both directions.

You're right. It's equal opportunities depressing that both male and female characters are routinely altered in fanart to make them more standardised and fit lowest common denominator sexual stereotypes.

It's a shorthand for "sexy" that often actually makes them less so, like in the example on the secret.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-10 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think it's that certain artists have ONLY LEARNED ONE BODY.

The artist who was drawing Stormwatch when Warren Ellis took it over was evidently told that Jenny Sparks had small breasts. (She even mentions it in dialogue.) He consistently drew her with no breasts at all, just a completely flat chest, because he had only ever learned to draw big 90s Image-style boobs. Small boobs were not part of his repertoire.

I once commissioned a picture of a tough, manly guy from a girl who (I discovered) could only draw bishies. I had to send it back three times, the second time with a photo of Chris Evans as shoulder-waist ratio reference. Have these kids today never SEEN a grown man? Maybe out a window or something?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-02-09 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Because you like the character but when it comes to porn, you prefer large breasts. So you add those to your fanart.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-09 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of the time.

Often I think the fan artists are just falling back on a visual convention because they're lazy and they know there's a ready audience for more of the same. How else to explain the blank non-hotness of some of the fanart versions, even altered to be more 'hot' with bigger tits and so on?

Honestly though, I'm one of those people that likes breasts, and seeing tits, if reasonably proportionate but on the large side, is a turn-on.

Then again, seeing a nice butt will also do it. :)

(Anonymous) 2015-02-09 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Then jack off to titty characters and leave the DFC alone. What's so hard about this?

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-02-10 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm one of those people that likes breasts, and seeing tits, if reasonably proportionate but on the large side, is a turn-on.

Which is perfectly fine, but, here's the thing...

Why not just look for - or, as an artist, draw - art of characters whose breasts are already large, or can be increased to the size you want without completely breaking from the character design?

When I'm in the mood to look at big breasts, I look for pictures of Power Girl, not Jinx, just like I wouldn't look for Power Girl when I'm in the mood to look at small ones.

I prefer the picture on the right so much more.
One thing that really skeeves me about the fan art of the left is that it looks like someone photo-shopped a 12 y/o girl's face on a huge breasted, adult woman

(Anonymous) 2015-02-10 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind honestly. Fanart's for fun so if you wanna do whatever with a character, do it.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-10 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
but anon...

- women with breasts are turned into flat-chested lolis
- women with breasts in general are given MASSIVE PENDULOUS KNOCKERS that defy the laws of physics and biology
- muscled men are turned into rail-thin bishonen
- men of all builds are beefed up into giant muscle-bound freaks of nature with 4 extra sets of abs
- women are given dicks
- men are drawn so androgynous that you might as well slap some tits on it and call it a woman

...because these are all fetishes. And not just in Japan. way to pick Japanese fanart because they do tend to be the most obvious offenders but their crazy-ass fetishes have turned out to be universal, and people of all cultures and nations with access to the internet share and enjoy their fetishes.

So you really can't do much besides sigh and roll your eyes, because it's been going on for a very long time and will not stop anytime soon. It has nothing to do with the characters or truth or canon or "character integrity," it has everything to do with what will get you clicks or cash. What the artist finds hot is probably not the character as they're portrayed in canon, and as long as they draw something that lots of other people also find hot, ain't a damn thing you can do about it besides clutch your pearls.

I just always feel bad for those poor fictional women. Their backs must be in agony, between the weight distribution and the lordosis.

I love how the shark cannon thing is invisible beside the small of her back in the left picture, despite its tail popping out by her hip on the other side.

The boobs aren't the only thing defying physics here.

Image: two fanarts of the same character, possibly named either Thresh or Mata according to Google images. She has blue hair in two very long braids, very pale skin with pale blue skin, and red eyes. One version, with ridiculously large breasts barely covered, much less controlled, by her skimpy top, is labeled “Left…er…wrong” and “Example not porn, but illustrative of point.” In the other, labeled “Right,” the character is flat-chested and the same top covers everything.

Text: I don’t understand why some pornographic fanartists seem to think that every woman needs huge tits. If you find a character attractive enough to want to draw her naked wouldn’t that include her breasts, or lack thereof.

The boobs make no sense but the sheer lack of facial resemblance bothers me even more. The canon Jinx looks psychotic and murderous, but the fanart makes her look like the shy teenage girl next door.

It's like they're not even the same character and the one on the left is just some chick modeling Jinx's costume.

I don't see a problem with it.

People draw what they like.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-10 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
Part of Jinx's charm is that she's flat chested and clearly doesn't give a fuck, to the point where she barely covers herself up. Fuck the abomination on the left.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-10 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
I agree to a point. some people have massive tits, so why shouldn't they be prepresented. and some people just like them, so if you are drawing something you like, you draw the things you like

Honestly I feel like sometimes people are just about shoving every female character into the generic sexy mold on principle.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-10 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
What other people already commented, I think they just reach for the easy market, easy identifying (when mostly everything in porn is big-titted so making it -not- would be too strange) and widest audience, where unfortunately big boobs are the cool and more sexual thing. And this isn't just for porn.

I feel kinda bad because I like all body shapes and would love artists to be creative and different. But it's all a marketing thing, they're afraid that if they shift to another norm, it won't be in demand anymore. And I'm sure many 'viewers' would agree that they're more comfortable with big breasts - it's what they're used to and what's considered ideal.
