Yeah, the murder rate is higher, but it's not that much higher.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Many orders of magnitude, actually.

it's about 6 times higher than in my country and it's not like we're on the very top of that list or whatever in terms of peacefulness

so define "not that much"

John Rogers summed the problem up pretty well on his blog: http://kfmonkey.blogspot.com/2009/09/leverage-207-two-live-crew-job-post.html

The money shot portion of that piece, for me, is here:

Momcore. The casual mainstreaming of gory/sexual violence used to give a frisson of horror to mass culture. We don't do it, we were mocking it, and the whole show was conceived as a rejection of those boogiemen in a quest to go after some actual villains doing big-time damage to people's lives. As Downey said, back when we were developing the show: "I think everybody else on TV has got serial killers covered."

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
We now have to thank CSI and such shows for "the CSI effect" of expectations in our judicial system but... the actual crimes? Yeah, not too far off.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
CSI's rate of incredibly weird and violent crimes is roughly as accurate as its portrayal of forensic science.

Which is to say: not at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as you also think that tiny English villages also have insanely high murder rates...

It's mostly limited to high-crime areas. You don't have drive-by shootings and such just happening everywhere every day.

And while I haven't watched these shows, I'm sure they're dramatized to some extent. Actual crime flies under the media radar far too often, and actual crime-fighting is probably more drudgery than excitement much of the time.

Considering it's a cop show I'd say it's not particularity indicative towards rl crime rates in their respective areas.

Also as far as the US murder/crime rates go: bigger population--->more crimes being committed.

As an interesting side note, my statistics teacher claimed to come from a county with one of the highest shooting rates per capita in the US. It was a quiet rural region where almost everyone was a hunter, which meant a lot of gun accidents and "gun accidents."

Yeah I recognise this. True crime shows are something that is not done her but US true crime shows are fine. So I have spent some time sick on the couch watching shit tv wondering if the USA is that insane or just more open to showing it.

The same with other reality tv. They are so fake and loud that it makes me wonder if the USA is just like that.

All Americans I know weren't like that at all but they are also mormons so IDK

You have to realize that you wouldn't have much of a crime show if every other episode was crime free. Just a bunch of detectives going grocery shopping and picking up their dry cleaning. Wouldn't be much of a show.

First time I visited the USA - at the rather impressionable age of 16, I half expected to be robbed at gunpoint.

are you from Japan? Because all the anime I've watched makes me believe that there must be an awful lot of incest, zombies, and violent murder in Japan. Much higher than my country.

Yeah, but that's also affected by population and reporting of homicides, OP.

It depends on what city you live in, and even what part of the city you live in. Most places are pretty safe.

The CSI shows are popular because they're the simple, sensational, exciting/titillating stories that wrap up in an hour or two, very far removed from what most Americans experience in their lifetimes. That is the very thing that makes them ~interesting and exciting~. Keep in mind that one never hears about what happens when people are level-headed and logical and talk things out rather than pulling pistols and start shooting, right? Nope, that makes a boring tee vee show that nobody would watch. See?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
For me it's high shool movies. For the longest time I think high schools in America are really that bad, with levels of popularity, bullies everywhere, students only caring about finding boyfriends or girlfriends and partying. Oh and the overacting and care way more about their look than anything. It takes me learning English and going to the internet to realize how diversed it can be.

Text: I’m not American

I grew up watchijng crime shows like these ones

After so many years, I started thinking America was the way they portray it: serial killers, murders, kidnappings, drivy-by shootings…

To this day I’m not sure how true it is.

Obviously it can’t be that bad, but you do have higher murder rates than my country…

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I think those shows would be pretty boring if they didn't feature a crazy new outlandish crime every week, OP that's kinda the point

I live in a suburb of Los Angeles (which is a county (!!!) as well as a city!) and somehow I'm still alive and unscathed

Fear not, OP. I've been staggering around this country for decades, and have yet to be shot, stabbed, or violently beaten.

(Though there were a couple close calls.)
