Embarrassing Interests

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-04-22 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some things you have wanted to do or buy but were too embarrassed to?

I am reading World War Z at work and it reminds me how much I want to prep for an emergency/apocalypse. Like hoarding food and water. Learning how to use a variety of weapons (especially a bow). Learning some practical skills like metalworking or first aid. Hell, I want to prepare escape routes and a bugout bag. But....I know this is something considered a bit crazy.

As long as you don't tell anyone you're doing it to prepare for the apocalypse, those are all practical skills that ought to come in handy!

I don't know about the hoarding, though it is always good to have extra water around just in case.

I would not even know where to start for learning something like archery. It seems like one of those things you got to get into as a kid.

I figure the extra food and water would also be useful in case of bad weather, which happens in Oklahoma.

Funnily enough, I've evaluated that my college campus is the perfect site for a post-apoc colony.
>Accommodation
>Farm and walled garden
>River around 3 sides for protection, water and hydro power
>workshops for machinery and vehicles
>Within hiking distance of urban areas
>Space for a solar farm
>Nearby solar farms to cannibalise
>Nearby country homes to cannibalise

I do that with every building I spend a lot of time in. I think my work would be a pretty good place to hold up in.

I would love to take pole dancing classes. Except I'd never be able to stop giggling when people asked me how I exercise.

Me too, though not exactly for the same reasons. I'm just not brave enough...I'd be too self-conscious. (I don't even have a gym membership, I walk outside or work out at home.)

I want to buy the Utena DVD set but I really don't like the box art. I don't want to expose a drawing of a naked anime girl in my room. Even if I hid it just receiving it and have everyone look at it would be the most embarassing thing ever.

http://i2.cdscdn.com/pdt2/3/0/9/1/200x200/3700091002309/rw/dvd-utena-box-1-2.jpg

Sorry about the abysmal quality but I'm not buying this.

No reason you couldn't do this without specifying why. Tons of people want to learn archery after The Hunger Games and the rest of it is good for emergencies, as you said, or camping. First aid is also very practical.

Oh man, I want to prep for an emergency/apocalypse but only because I've read so many post-apocalyptic stories.

The practical skills I've been teaching myself slowly is gardening and canning foods. Learned how to make homemade tomato sauce to last for MONTHS. I also live in an area where I could feasibly turn my yard into a farm and I live near enough to a river.

Physical copies of erotica books. I love the ebooks, but I'd love to have some physical ones, but I'd be too embarrassed.

Does Sauron count as an embarrassing interest? I've decided that if I get a cat, I will name it Mairon and make up some excuse of some sort for the name if anyone asks.

I'm also too embarrassed to walk into a sex shop (and also not sure if they'd be very female-friendly and not male-gazy and creepy). I'd love to get advice and toys that will actually work for me, but the best I can manage to brave is buying cheep ones on Amazon.

It doesn't help that my parents still have access to my bank account for another 6 months (until I pass the bar because they loan/give me money sometimes).

I want to get a bunch of dakimakura. Guy ones, not girls ones. Mostly because someone keeps trying to break in my place, and if they are going to take my stuff I want to force them to walk into a otaku nightmare. But I'm afraid it would come out of it's packaging and my mailman would question me for life.

I really, really want to buy goth/lolita clothing, but I think I'm way too old to wear it in public, and I feel bad throwing around money for something that I wouldn't wear on a regular basis. Bonus points if it's cosplay stuff, like the Darling Amy pinafores. I really, really want one of these, but I can't bring myself to spend the money. :(

Online shopping sometimes cuts out the middleman for potentially embarrassing purchases.

Though I don't know how I'd feel about getting a scooter, off amazon without knowing if it was big enough for me (although maybe child size is also my size?). I really want a scooter (and a skateboard too) to live out the gnarly Bart Simpson childhood I never had, and also because they look fun as shit.

But but the clerks will assume I'm buying it for my kid or something equally nonsenically shaming, how can I ask them if they have a scooter in my size ahahaa orz
I don't give a hoot when I buy toys, taking my time in the aisle even smiling at the dad who figures that I'm the reason he can't find something during xmas, but why this.

I am far far far too invested about alternative historical fiction. Also, there's only one alt-history fictional work that I consider the gospel truth, and it's about West Africa. http://www.alternatehistory.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=226788

As you can see, I am absolutely alone if I want to gush about it on the real world. I've tried getting others to read it, but I can see that they're not gonna take it seriously and read it, even though they say yes. The format of the work itself (an online forum thread) makes it even harder to get into. :(

Also, due to the above fiction, I'm now writing my own alt-history fiction on the same site. A few weeks ago, I just got my first wank! it was centered on two posters passive-aggressively arguing on who should take over North Africa: The Ottoman Empire or Italy.

On one hand, I don't want any wank. On the other... Yay, my fic is actually taken seriously enough for people to discuss and argue!

I should not be this happy. XD

Apocalypse prep is also one of my hobbies! And I can completely understand why you wouldn't want to talk about it, because most people hear about the concept and start to assume you're either a tin-hatter or you're some kind of religious freak. A lot of those skills are actually really useful for non-apocalypse situations, and I can personally vouch that archery is really fun on top of being a good work out for upper body and core strength.

In addition to keeping non-perishable food and bottled water around, you might want to invest in a survival straw, which is a portable water filter that makes any water safe to drink. My brother has one and used it on a recent camping trip to drink out of a river, and it worked perfectly.

It can be expensive to build up your survival kit, but if you've got any army surplus places nearby I'd suggest trying there first. Mine has cheap bags, swag tents, first-aid kits (although mine is customised for bushwalking / CPR), and they usually have lots of useful odds and ends.

I have water purification tablets from the pharmacy, so I don't have to carry around lots of water. Just something to refill. You want your supplies to be fairly mobile.

It's a good idea to review your local evacuation plans, and if you live near bushland/forest - know where the fire trail access points are.

Some skills are just good to have. Don't be embarrassed to learn first-aid. You'll likely use it at some point.

I forgot to say - I have a survival kit. It actually says zombie survival on it (in practicality it is for fires/floods and general emergencies where I either have to stay in house or leave suddenly)

Includes an airtight floatable first aid kit, travel food, water, my camping shit is nearby, dog has a second backpack with emergency stuff, fire blanket, fire extinguisher etcetc
