Magical Weight Gain...

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
tw: food, weight, eating

I've put on over three pounds in the past week and I have absolutely no idea how.

I've been so fucking strict watching my calories and I just don't understand how this happened (and when I say strict I mean I've been weighing motherfucking EVERYTHING, even condiments, by the gram). And I've also done as much walking/exercise as I normally do so I know it can't be that.

I'm so angry and frustrated at my body right now. And disheartened as fuck.

Re: Magical Weight Gain...

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
~5 pound fluctuation in a week is nothing and probably water weight.

Re: Magical Weight Gain...

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It took me WEEKS to lose those few pounds, though. And to have it all come back within a couple of days...Jesus Christ it sucks.

If you want advice, don't think about weight, think about form and shape. Muscle takes up less volume than fat but weighs more, and it's possible you gained muscle and lost fat and got smaller, too.

It's possible you're gaining muscle if you're working out. Or your hormones could be to blame. There are a lot of things that can make you gain weight, try not to feel bad about it and eat healthy and take care of yourself.

Re: Magical Weight Gain...

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Exercise level is constant so I know it's not that.

If hormones are doing it, though, then that's just another reason to consider getting sterilized. For fuck's sake. I look like I'm pregnant because apparently my body's decided to put all this additional weight on my abdomen.

This is off topic, but when I read the subject title of this post, I totally thought for a moment that I was on the kink meme.

Re: Magical Weight Gain...

As someone who's also dieting and exercising in an effort to lose weight, I understand the frustration. But do yourself a favor and don't monitor your weight too closely. Weighing in once a week is enough, and expect there to be fluctuations for no obvious reasons. Personally, I know that there can be a 3-4 lb. weight gain just prior to my period that will drop away afterwards. You want to look at downward trends over months rather than fixating on specific points. It'll tell you more about your overall progress.

Yes, this. OP is just driving herself crazy if she micromanages her weightwatching like this.

Re: Magical Weight Gain...

It could be water weight. My weight can fluctuate based on stuff like that within days, 3 pounds isn't really that much in the long term, it will probably go away.

And if you aren't eating ENOUGH calories it could be your body reacting to that.

Re: Magical Weight Gain...

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you sure you're eating g enough for the exercise you're doing?

Re: Magical Weight Gain...

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep.

It's mostly just walking to be honest so nothing super strenuous.

And I weigh everything, look up the calories per gram, and then add that up so that I KNOW exactly how many calories I'm eating per day.

It's okay, be chill. The body is a weird, mysterious thing, and despite our best efforts, we can't control something like a 3lb weight fluctuation. If it makes any difference, it's almost certainly not real weight gain, but water retention for any number of reasons.

Some things to ease your mind:

-if you have menstrual cycles, you can retain water at pretty much any point because of hormone fluctuations. Generally, 3-5 lbs is what the body tends to retain.

-if you had more than your usual amount of sodium, your body will retain some water.

-if you had more carbs than usual, you might be a little bloated/be retaining water.

-if you've been exercising heavily for long periods, without proper hydration, your body will retain some water to keep at equilibrium.

You are fine. 3 lbs does not determine your worth as a person.

oh man I feel you so fucking hard OP, you don't even know.

based on your responses it just sounds like normal bloating/water weight to me.

Unsolicited advice below. Don't read it if you don't want it.

It really sounds like you are obsessing about the numbers on the scale to a detrimental degree. Actually, it sounds like you are obsessing about numbers to a harmful degree, period. As someone who went through the same thing, to the point that I became completely depressed and distressed when I didn't lose a pound or fluctuated up a few, let me tell you that kind of stress is absolutely not mentally or physically healthy. You might want to think about backing off the numbers obsession. Maybe weighing yourself once a week instead, as a starter.

I would say you're overreacting, but how did it take you "weeks" to lose three pounds?

How old are you? Is your frame still growing?

I agree that weight is less important than leanness--build up muscle mass, and your metabolism will increase.

Also, three pounds on the belly does not really make you look pregnant, unless you are absurdly small.

Re: Magical Weight Gain...

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm almost 24.

Nope -- I've sadly reached my final height.

I'm 5'2" so I'm not absurdly small but...still kind of short.

3 pounds may not seem like much, but it's over 2.5% of my total weight.

If you're far gone enough to be measuring condiments, and three pounds makes you this angry and disheartened, then your weight is not the main issue about yourself that you need to deal with.

Re: Magical Weight Gain...

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
This. Three pounds is a perfectly normal weight fluctuation and can be caused by any number of harmless and transient things. There's no reason to be making a big deal about it.

Re: Magical Weight Gain...

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
You're back, I see, calorie counting and weight-down-to-the-minute-nth-of-a-pound obsessed anon. This is what... third, fourth time in the last few weeks?

The advice hasn't changed. You're obsessive and you need to address why you're obsessive over three measly pounds when you're already at a healthy weight. You need to consider self-esteem and depressive issues, you need to look at WHY this is bothering you so much. You need to think about getting proper help.

Stop measuring, stop calculating numbers, and find a safe space where you can discuss your issues with a professional who can help you. That place is not F!S.

Re: Magical Weight Gain...

Anon, please get help. You don't seem to realize you're well down the path to an eating disorder and you need more help than FS can give, especially when you appear to be ignoring the overwhelming feedback about your "weight gain" being bloating. You've convinced yourself what you're doing is normal and healthy, but it's not. Please take care.

Re: Magical Weight Gain...

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah this. There is a history of eating disorders in my family and what anon is describing sounds fairly familiar to me. Not saying OP definitely has one of course, but they sound at risk for it at least. This kind of thinking/behavior can get worse and very dangerous.

Re: Magical Weight Gain...

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Your metabolism has probably slowed down because your body thinks you're in danger of starving to death.

Get help, anon.

- Any chance you could have gained muscle? Muscle weighs quite a bit. Best way to tell would be to measure yourself.

- Are you by any chance on or period? If you are, wait a few days and see if the weight gain stays.

Sounds odd, but: are you sure you're not eating too little? In some cases your body can think it's starving and starts holding onto nutrition like crazy.

Re: Magical Weight Gain...

Chill, sis. weight fluctuation is normal. As someone said, plus or minus five pounds is absolutely normal, due to water weight, time of day, period stuff, and what have you. I'd normally suggest weighing yourself daily and taking the average, but mostly you need to chill.
