Well, I hope you've checked out the Kitty books by Carrie Vaughn. They're awesome, and the packs are far from all-male.

Ugh, I can see the problem. People still latch onto how wolves act in captivity as an accurate model of wolf packs in the wild. Throw in machismo about "alpha males" . . .

On a side note, this just made me realize that I cannot think of a good book with a female werewolf in it. I heard some people like one in Discworld, but I never got into that series. Everything else that comes to mind is crap like Bareback or Blood and Chocolate.

(I vaguely recall a repentant werewolf called Lougarry, but I have no idea what book she was in. TV Tropes also brings up Kitty Norville, which I think is pretty popular, and something called Loyal Enemies.)

Hmm not a book, but you do have the werewolves from Once Upon a Time, sure aside from Red they only show up in a couple episodes, but they were led by Red's Mom (who got it from her grandmom).

Blood and Chocolate

I still resent the person who recommended this.

Not even fully how they act in captivity, but how Nazi psychologists decided they acted in captivity to form a model of natural animal behavior to justify a lot of their ideology.

The Dresden files has some lady werewolves. But the stories are told from the POV of a guy who isn't the most progressive person in the world. (Not sure how much is the character, how much is the writer on that).

I feel weird about agreeing with stuff like this, because it's really hard for me to tease out how much of it has to do with representation, and how much of it is that I like to read and/or think about ladies making out

(But also, I'd rather see more ghost stories than werewolf stories either way)

I tend not to like stories with werewolf packs at all, really, but that's mostly because the whole alpha/omega, rigid social dynamics thing that a lot of them have. In a lot of cases, I'm nearly glad that there aren't female werewolves in them, because that's not a society I'd want to be female in. Biologically-enforced social dominance structures are not my cup of tea (yes, I also violently loathe A/B/O fics).

Stories with single werewolves don't tend to fall into the same traps, heading more towards the tragic monster idea. Oddly ... several stories I've seen that focus on a single werewolf tend to portray their adoptive (normal) wolfpack without all the weird alpha/omega shit. Mostly because they're following the 'accepting nature vs oppressive humans' trope instead. I don't know. I guess there are a couple of opposing tropes in play depending on what kind of werewolf story you're reading.

I'd like one that managed to have multiple werewolves of all genders in packs that weren't strictly and outdatedly hierarchical, though. If anyone has stumbled across anything like that ...

There's always the Otherworld pack post-Elena-alpha (Not the show, stay farrrr from that) You have her daughter who is the second female werewolf/first full werewolf female, the halfdemon mate of one of the pack members, she's also Indian, then there's the half-demon dating another one of the pack members and the daughter of a werewolf refugee from the Australian pack.

Patty Brigg's Mercy Thompson/Alpha & Omega series has female werewolves in them. (Yes, she has the alpha/omega dynamic too, but err, her omegas are valium for werewolves.) I'm going to warn that the first alpha/omega short story definitely deals with rape survival and that in Iron Kissed there is rape. (I'm tired of tossed in rape as a subplot for edginess.)

As a writer of werewolves, I've been sitting here trying to remember why most novels have werewolves as all male, and the whole 'females can't bear children' thing. Because in myth, the females did have children. That's how one man figured out his wife was a werewolf. (he cut the paw of the werewolf off, came home to find his wife binding her stump of an arm.) Mostly, I think it is because popular culture has latched onto the hyper violent loup garou version of the werewolf, add the already mentioned bad science surrounding wolf behavior and you have a mess in the making.

Unlike vampires, werewolves don't have one origin story. They have several across many cultures. So, there isn't one right way to do it (or writers get lazy and don't do the research) and we've got this mostly male, hyper violent, OCD controlling, extreme painful change (which is often what kills women who become werewolves) type of werewolf.

For the record, I don't write that type of werewolf. (Since wolves are families with siblings that squabble and the squabbling is far more entertaining to me, along with play! and puppies!)

Maybe you should try Anne Bishops Courtyard of the Others series (Written in Red is the first.) It's Anne Bishop's take on wereanimals (like the Black Jewels were her take on vamps), though there are elemental and vampires in it too. The main werewolf type characters are males, but females are shown. But like with the Black Jewels, she does go for shock value at times. When she says Dark Fantasy, she means Dark Fantasy.

As a man who sees werewolves as a direct metaphor for masculinity, let me say that...

I don't blame you. If you're gonna have a bunch of werewolves running around for any reason, there's going to be at least one woman in the bunch.

Some Teen Wolf fic includes female werewolves.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-04 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, the show tends to either kill werewolves (Erica, Boyd, Aiden, Kali, Ennis, Laura, Talia) or send them away (Jackson, Cora, Isaac). Right now there's only Scott, Derek, and Liam (I'm not sure whether to count Peter or not) and technically there's Satomi and her pack (I'm not really sure how many there are, but there's at least Brett and Sydney). However, I'd count as part of Scott's pack Lydia (a banshee), Malia (a werecoyote), and Kira (a kitsune). But in fic, Erica is often alive, sometimes Laura is, sometimes there was no Hale fire (so Talia and Laura are alive and Cora is around), and sometimes Cora is back. But I don't know if that's what you're looking for.
