Images: The title screens for the TV shows Forever and Gotham. Forever, on the left, is a picture of a cityscape that goes from black-and-white to sepia tone to full color. Gotham, on the right, is a bleak cityscape in browns and greys, with a blimp stuck in there for some reason.

Text: It pisses me off so much that Forever was cancelled and Gotham wasn't. Especially since they come across like two sides of the same coin to me.

Under the Forever title: *Overarching story arcs mixed with "case of the week" individual episodes, with the cases taking precedence.

*Small cast of characters that all act well/play well off each other.

*Fleshes things out through flashbacks.

*Mostly light-hearted and positive.

Under the Gotham title: *Overarching story arcs mixed with "case of the week" individual episodes, with the arcs taking precedence.

*Large cast of characters with inconsistent characterization/bad acting. (Barbara, anyone?)

*Relies on audience's knowledge of comics to flesh things out.

*Mostly grim and gritty.

(At the bottom of the secret): I feel like the only reason Gotham's still around is because it's part of the Batman mythos. If it had been an original story, I think it would have been cancelled a long time ago.

Apples and Oranges.

Didn't see Forever (don't even know what it's about) and didn't like Gotham. Hell if I know why some things get views/to stay on air and others don't. *forever bitter about Young Justice*

Can't comment on Forever, but I think Gotham has its moments. I didn't go into it expecting much, but in some ways I was pleasantly surprised. (Harvey Bullock, Cobblepot and Fish are all excellent. Some characters definitely got the short end of the stick, like Barbara, Renee and Nygma.)

I actually had a lot of fun with the first season, but I didn't take it too seriously either.

I actually think Gotham is an excellent show, definitely my favourite of all the superhero shows around at the moment. I'm glad it got renewed.

That being said, I'm with you that it's a pity Forever got cancelled. It was a very sweet show and I would have loved to see more of it.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry your show got canceled but often times one show getting pulled and another being saved has nothing to do with one another.

Like the Forever fans have actually been pissing me off because they decided to be bitchy about Galavant being saved which... has nothing to do with Forever AT ALL (I am pretty sure a big reason Galavant was saved is because it's good filler material for when Once Upon a Time is on hiatus.) Like those two shows are completely different in tone and in audience, and I didn't appreciate Forever fans shitting all over a show *I like* because theirs got canceled.

I'm sorry Forever fans have been bitchy about Galavant being saved, but you're wrong. They are connected. Basically, each network can only renew a certain number of shows, and this generally is done by looking at the ratings with respect to each other. Galavant had horrid ratings. Beyond horrid. There is no way it should have been renewed based on those ratings. Forever also had bad ratings, but they were better than Galavant's. Looking at the ratings there is really no reason Galavant should have been renewed. (The network could easily find another "filler" show for when OUaT is on hiatus, and possibly one that got better ratings.) So I can understand why Forever fans might be bitter that Galavant got renewed and their show didn't, even if it sounds like they might not be acting polite in expressing their opinions about it.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not directly the fault of Galavant though. Just like it wouldn't be the fault of Agent Carter (which was a similar situation where I think it got picked up because it's a good hiatus show) or any other show that didn't do well in the ratings that got renewed.

Blame the network heads, not another show. People were literally bitching in a Galavant post and it was beyond obnoxious.

DA

This. If they were on different networks, the person you're responding to would have a point, but since they weren't, they absolutely are connected.

GALAVANT GOT SAVED?! OHOHOHOHOHOHOHOOOOOOOOO!

I am so sorry that Forever fans are being nasty about Galavant being renewed over Forever. I have no dog in that hunt, but it's awful that people are ruining other people's good time, connection or not. It's times like these that I'm glad I'm on the fringes of the Forever fandom.

I have no thoughts on Gotham since I haven't seen it, but I totally agree on Forever. It's the only canceled show from this season that I really cared about it, and it makes me so sad that it's gone. I've seen some people speculating about it getting picked up by a different network (I think I saw SyFy somewhere?) or Netflix or something, which would be awesome, but I know there's probably very little chance of that happening. :(

Yeah, me too. It's a nice thought, but I don't know how often that "gets switched over to another station/netflix/hulu" gambit actually works.

That said, I'm not sure at what point I can definitively say "that isn't happening." If it hasn't happened by next May, sure. But can I say it's not happening in September, when the fall season starts up? Or should I wait until the end of the year?

I can't speak for Forever, since I never watched it (My mom was addicted, though), but I thought Gotham was really meh. And I say that as someone who will eat up almost all Batman mythos. It was just meh.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-18 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same. I love all things Batman but Gotham does nothing for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I've not seen Gotham so no comment there, but those bullet points are a pretty concise summary of what I liked about Forever.

I especially loved the way Abe and Henry's father-son relationship was portrayed, and that although the show frequently dealt with the less fun facets of Henry's immortality, it maintained a balance where the overall atmosphere didn't feel weighed down by it.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I love both, and the reasons I like Forever include the reasons you listed. I'm sad Forever is cancelled. The shows air on different networks in different time slots, though, so cancellation and renewal decisions are not linked.

Yeah, I know, and I certainly harbor no ill-will for Gotham on that score. I was mostly just complaining because they had similar concepts (detective shows with overarching narratives) but one executed it far better than the other, in my opinion, and yet THAT's the one that gets cancelled.

Neither of these grabbed me tbh. Forever didn't seem so bad but even with the immortality angle it wasn't enough to keep me watching it, but then I am just not much of a fan of cop shows. And Gotham I just found meh more than anything, watched the first couple of episodes and didn't feel like watching anymore.

But I get feeling sad when something you like isn't picked back up, that's always sad, especially if you think it's going somewhere at the end of the season.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I gave up on watching Gotham after just a few episodes because I found it to be very poorly done in many areas. And I did enjoy watching Forever. However, you can't really compare the two. They are/were on different networks with different expectations. (I had held out a little bit of hope for Forever, just because that time slot was such a bad one, so I was hoping they would nurture it and see if it could grow in another season. I wasn't surprised it was canceled, though.)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
What everyone said. I loved Forever and I refuse to watch Gotham, but.....different networks, different expectations. Gotham's ratings were decent for Fox (though with the downward trend they seem to be on, they may not be so lucky next season), and it was also renewed early when the ratings were higher than they were when the season ended. Forever's ratings were really low for ABC. It was the second lowest rated drama on the network by the end of the season (next to Revenge, which was also cancelled).

Sorry, you can't really compare the two in terms of renewal.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-17 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they are on different networks and different networks have different criteria for renewal. But there are a lot of things that go into that decision - ratings, fit, cost of production, production company (networks have extra incentive for keeping shows produced in-house), connection, new shows that they like, other shows they want to keep, critical acclaim, etc. You could compare it to ABC renewing other shows with low ratings, but they do have reasons for renewing those: Galavant (limited run, generated a lot of talk, different), American Crime (limited run, critically acclaimed), Agent Carter (limited run, connected to other properties, well reviewed), Agents of SHIELD (connected to other properties), Nashville (produced partly by ABC studios, good pedigree).

(Anonymous) 2015-05-19 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, OP! I would totally give up Gotham for more Forever.
