Even if it was an Avengers film instead of Captain America, given the trajectory of the MCU, it's kind of obvious that Steve is going to be the one in the right here.

A ton of Tony's problems are self-made or things he contributes to so I'm not sure how it would be otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel that in most issues if Steve is on one side and Tony's on the other, Steve's side is probably the one to root for.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way.

But then I'm a huge Steve fan and there are things about Tony that really rub me the wrong way.

Still -- Steve's never really done anything I disagree with. At least nothing important as of yet.

MTE. Now I realize he isn't actually perfect (because no one is), but I feel like I would trust Steve's decisions (and conscience) more than I would Tony's.

(Which isn't to say I dislike Tony, just that I tend to agree with Steve more often. I will admit I AM getting a bit tired of Tony in the MCU, but I still hope he comes off at least semi-reasonable and sympathetic in Civil War. Maybe it won't be black and white.)

Tony is more eccentric and hard to follow his logic.
Steve is a boyscout and generally makes the morally right choice.
Of course it's easier to trust the one that thinks safely inside the box.

Eh. I think it will be a bit more subtle and more of a grey area than all that.

Though wasn't Steve on the "right" side in the comics?

One of the big problems (of many) with the story in the comics was the way it was written so the anti-registration side was clearly right and the pro-registration side was clearly wrong, destroying many characters in the process.

Though wasn't Steve on the "right" side in the comics?

kiiiind of. marvel's official stance on Civil War was that Tony's side was right (the pro-registration side) but the actual writers of the comic obviously didn't get that memo because like 95% of the storyline felt like it was pushing readers to be on Steve's side (and considering what gigantic assholes Tony's side was being, it wasn't exactly difficult to think that Steve had a better point)...right until the very end when Steve admitted that Tony was right and that he made a mistake in being anti-registration, which I honestly didn't see coming. Civil War was...kind of a mess

I'm kind of worried about this too. I mean, we don't know what the exact conflict is and what Rogers and Stark's positions are going to be, so who knows. But it's going to be hard to have a conflict where both sides have good points and yet have Cap still definitely be the hero of his own movie.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
But was the comics version any better?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course it will, because it's Captain America.

I mean, it might not.

But it's been pointed out that by putting Cap on the Anti-Reg side in the comics, and then having Spider-Man join him, Marvel made the Pro-Reg side look like villains.

Even before the atrocities, which were all on Tony's side.

Yeah, this was an ill-advised idea for a movie.

Still crossing my fingers they'll find a way to not follow the story that closely :/

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Tony will 100% deserve whatever it is he has coming.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, they obviously gonna make Steve's side the "right" one. I mean, they already started laying down the work with aou didn't they?

(which is something that irritates me, and has always irritated me in the comics. I like Steve but I don't like the "Steve is always right" thing. He's clearly a good and righteous man and that its his thing and I respect it. I just wish they wouldn't always frame things in a "See Steve is right" way. I wish they would make him fuck up, like all humans do, sometimes.)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually...in a way...they do show him fucking up. It's BECAUSE of his morality though.

You know how Steve says in The First Avenger that he doesn't want to kill anyone. And he uses a shield primarily as a weapon. Well, when you watch the scene on the train, you'll notice that Steve knocks the big gun dude down, but he eventually gets back up and ends up blasting Bucky off the train which leads to his fall.

If Steve had killed him, Bucky wouldn't have fallen and become the Winter Soldier.

You'll notice afterwards too that Steve says "I'm not gonna stop til all of Hydra's dead or captured" and when he's on the Valkyrie, he's A LOT more brutal with people. He literally just throws them out of the plane or uses knives.

I always found that pretty interesting.

But I agree with you that having Steve be too perfect would be a bummer.

Yep. If it's like the comics at all it won't matter who's right & everyone's gonna shit on Tony anyway cause Cap can do no wrong >__>

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
People have been doing the latter ever since TWS became a successful movie and Steve the new MCU golden child.

lol what corners of fandom do you hang out in.
Next to Steve, Tony is the biggest fandom darling.
He could probably kill and blast away everyone in the mcu, not tip a waiter, and punch a puppy in the face and he'd still have hundreds of stans waiting in line to stand up for him.

This is a pretty stupid advertisement.
The movie is titled "Captain America", gee I wonder who will come out triumphant.

Like, seriously?

This sucks for me because I like both Steve and Tony and I'd hate to see either of them get dragged through the mud to prove the other is in the right. They are both well loved characters with successful solo movies so it will be difficult to pick a side unless they completely mangle one of their characters into some unsympathetic villain.

It's a Captain America movie so that kind of hints how things are going to play out, but I just hope both characters are handled with respect. To be honest I always hated those comics that pit two non-villain characters against each other, because one of them always gets to be portrayed as the crazy/wrong/evil one while the other comes out looking like a saint.
