Does anybody here track calories? (possible triggers for ED)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-26 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm currently dieting at 1200 calories a day. I haven't had some proper junk food in months.

I'm considering fasting all day, buying myself a pint of Ben and Jerry's Red Velvet cake (1000 calories), and eating the whole thing as my calories for the day. Is this possible or am I going to fuck myself up somehow?

You could do that but I would not rec doing that on a daily basis. You wouldn't be getting enough protein and other nutrients

If my diet is super healthy with mostly vegetables and fruits do you think my poor body could take it? I'm such an asshole to it haha.

If you do that for one day? I don't think it would be a significant problem besides feeling sick from too much ice cream at once

LOL

I've eaten 1600 calories of ice cream in one day. Did not feel sick. I just wanted more to be honest.

Then one day shouldn't be bad

Reminds me of when I had too much White Russian ice cream for my birthday. I couldn't finish the damn pint because of a simultaneous brain freeze and stomachache.

I do.

You can absolutely do that. I really limit carbs during the week but on the weekends I let myself indulge in bread and ice cream. It hasn't been an issue so far.

More concerning to me is that you're only eating 1200 calories. That's...not sustainable.

My advice would be to calculate your BMR: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/

Then find your daily calorie needs: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/harris-benedict-equation/

You'll lose more slowly, but you're less likely to put it back on. You can't survive long-term on 1200 calories a day. Unless your goal is short-term weight loss (such as for bikini season).

If you want to properly lose weight and keep it off, you have to consider that you must eat like this for the REST OF YOUR LIFE. 1200 calories isn't enough.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-26 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually a very, very tiny girl, so 1200 is only a hundred or so below my BMR.

Re: Does anybody here track calories? (possible triggers for ED)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-26 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Unless you're laying in bed all day, BMR isn't enough.

If you get no exercise, you still need to multiply your BMR by 1.2 to get daily calorie needs.

DA

No

Losing 1 lb/wk is considered healthy. That's a 500 calorie deficit, 500x7 = 3500 = 1 lb

If their BMR is 1300, 1300 x 1.2 is 1560. Eating 1200 is a 360 deficit and well within healthy weight loss range

Re: Does anybody here track calories? (possible triggers for ED)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-26 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Why not just eat 1560? In the long term, that's what you're going to need to continue to eat to maintain.

That's bad for you, just eat a scoop for a week and eat less calories from other stuff.

I don't know if OP is like me but this NEVER works for me.

I can't have sweets in the house or I eat them.

So if I want to have any, I'll just give myself a cheat day and let myself indulge for one day.

OP

This is it exactly. I cannot not just eat the whole carton. A spoonful a day should be considered torture in most states.

I'm a recovering binge eater so with junk food I like the big bang or nothing at all.

OP needs to learn how to manage that or else they will never be able to keep weight off long-term.

Being able to keep weight off requires being able to have temptations around you and knowing how to eat them in moderation. Otherwise you're setting yourself up for an extremely unhealthy attitude towards food and it's not sustainable over a long period of time.

Honest question, in what situation would OP have to live with constant temptations unless they had them in their house/apartment? Not everyone has food at work.

Re: Does anybody here track calories? (possible triggers for ED)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-26 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
That might be true of temptations when it comes to eating out or buying your groceries and making sure you pick up the spinach instead of the donuts. But in your own home? Avoiding temptation by just not having it in the house is absolutely valid, and recommended by just about everyone/thing when it comes to cutting back on unhealthy eating. After all, if you only eat donuts on cheat days or for special treats, why on earth would you gave them in the house every day?

Plus, if you do have problems with control, you're not going to solve them over night. Small steps are significant, and if eating your days worth of calories in icecream is an improvement on eating icecream until you are sick, then that's an improvement.

Yes, you will be in trouble. The reason being is that the human body needs time released calories instead of that strange sugar rush you have planned.
A healthy meal probably should have some protein, some complex carbohydrates, some ( not too much) fat, and some fiber. That way, all of the calories in that meal won't hit your system all at once. Your digestive system will process all of that stuff at different rates, so that you will get that meal's calories over a longer span of time, rather than all at once. This is one of the ways that your body can keep its blood sugar steady.

Yeah, you're probably right. I won't gain weight on the ice cream but I'll probably be ravenous for actual food the next day, which isn't good!

Re: Does anybody here track calories? (possible triggers for ED)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-26 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yoy could definitely do it, with probably no adverse effects if you don't have any blood sugar/lactose issues. You'll probably feel pretty sick afterwards, have a majoy sugar high then crash, feel pretty irritable and probably pretty hungry for most of the day. But if it's what you want you want to do just this once, whatever, go for it and see how it makes you feel.

An alternative suggestion is to work out your calories in order to fit a serving of icecream/ other junkfood into your meal plan if you want. Alternatively, for a day work out the calories you need to maintain weight rather than lose it, and fill that with icecream.

If you're craving junkfood this much, trying to design your diet to allow yourself treats will probably help you a lot in maintainibg your diet in the long run. (I am writing this assuming your diet is healthy and you aren't restricting your calories unsustainably.)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-26 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't recommend that being ALL you eat that day. Instead maybe what you could do is have your ice cream but then also something super-filling for 'dinner'. (Like, oatmeal with nuts or something). It might put you over your 'limit' a little bit, but you're also less likely to be ravenous the next day.

Overall, though, doing this sort of thing is totally fine as a once in a while treat to yourself. Worst case you'll end up with an upset stomach, so it's probably best to plan this for a weekend.

I've done that. It doesn't make me feel good. Like, idek about health, but I occasionally go a day/over a day without eating then "making up for it" with junk food and just... makes me feel gross, physically and emotionally (its not something im proud of obvs)

OP, I've just read all the comments here and seen that you say you have a problem not eating a whole tub of ice-cream in one sitting. If this is something you struggle with, have you thought about buying one of the small, single serve tubs of ben and jerrys (270ish calories according to a quick google) and having it for dinner/one meal of the day, rather than having a big tub for the entire day? That way you can feel like you've indulged while still getting some nutrients in in the rest of the day, and not feeling as bad as you would if you ate an entire tub.

On days when I've just wanted something junky but haven't wanted to blow my calorie budget I have done this, with a glass of wine. Sure, you wouldn't find this recommended in any dieting guide, but if it keeps you sane then it keeps you sane. In fact, doing this kind of indulgence helped me develop a better relationship towards cravings/ binge eating.

But if you need to start with the whole tub to kick start the process then that's okay too. It sounds weird, but I think the fact you're trying to indulge your cravings within a calorie limit is a good sign, because you are exercising rational control over your eating.

I don't think it will "fuck you up" exactly, but you might not feel too great. Being on a restricted diet and then suddenly eating a whole pint of ice cream would give me the shits, but ymmv. Even if I didn't get sick, I'd probably be extra hungry later. Empty calories always do that to me.

It's better to eat what you usually eat and allow yourself some ice cream (surely you don't have to eat the whole pint?) on top of your usual food.
