This clip is relevant to both sides.

“You see, Caitlyn, when you were a man we could talk about your athleticism, your business acumen. But now you’re a woman, and your looks are the only thing we care about.”

This would be true IF people hadn't commented on the (pretty terribly done) plastic surgery she had done pre-transitioning. Which they did - at length.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
not really? All anyone talks about these days is Jenner's relationship with the kardashians.

This is true of the SJWs, too. I've probably seen the same tumblr posts OP has seen raving about what a hottie she is, etc. etc. and thought... eh. I'm happy for her that she's happy and I understand why people are remarking on her appearance (especially since hello, she's on the cover of Vanity Fair, let's not pretend appearance is an unnatural thing to discuss in this context) but I don't think she's gorgeous and you know what? THAT'S FINE.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
The Vanity Fair cover was ridiculous. Why get photographed by one of the most prominent portraitists out there, and then airbrush the hell out of the resulting photos? It would have made much more of a statement if they'd left them untouched.

Also, OP? I agree with your feelings.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, sure, transphobe. Need to pass your specific arbitrary measure of beauty for it to count.

Has it ever occurred to you that not everyone has your ridiculously high standards?

I really don't think this is what was being said.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have to find every trans person beautiful in order to recognize and support that they're trans, though. Which the secret clearly stated.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this was actually the exact OPPOSITE of what OP was trying to say.

TBH, "ageing actress with too much filler" is what passes for gorgeous nowadawys. I think she's a handsome woman, much like Glenn Close or Meryl Streep. I wouldn't call either of them beautiful, by my own standards, but there are probably those who do.

Re: praise for being trans (or any other trendy* social anti-norm)... well, that's Tumblr. What do you expect? You can't NOT be 150% supportive of someone on Tumblr, because that's how you fit in and keep from being eaten alive.

* don't even try to start shit over this, because it's true, and it's not a dig at trans people or disabled people or any people, it's a comment on Tumblr's latching on to one little detail about a person and making that their entire identity... I get excited when I hear news outlets refer to "Olympic athlete Caitlin Jenner" because all the internet has to say about her is "Caitlin Jenner, trans woman".

Well...isn't that basically sort of what she is? An aging celebrity?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The point is to lift up a group of people that is one of the most hated in our society. It's so ingrained in people's minds to find trans women hideous, disgusting freaks, god forbid people wanna make one feel good for being publicly herself right? Who cares if it was airbrushed, that's pretty much celebrity standard. It shouldn't have been, none of them should be except by request of the models, but it's funny to me that people are criticizing it so much louder now, with her.

You don't have to think she's pretty, but that's not the point. The point is her. And trans women as a whole having more people to look up to being brave, and loving themselves no matter how they look and how fuckable people find them.

I thought Tumblr was pissed at Caitlyn Jenner talking/existing over proud disabled autistic genderqueer people of color.

Yeah, there is definitely this gross undercurrent of "You HAVE to like trans people now, look how beautiful Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox are! Trans people aren't the hilarious transvestites you made fun of for years, they can be hot!" Yeah, well, it shouldn't matter whether someone is conventionally attractive or not, you should still treat them like a person.

And tbh, "tumblrinas" are the group most likely to point out these problems and agree with you.

I'd tap that

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It always strikes me as so condescending when people gush about how beautiful someone is because of such-and-such hardships in their life. It just comes off like they are baby-talking to a young kid. There are other things you can praise someone for like courage and strength of character.

It also seems hypocritical that some people will criticize other women of getting plastic surgery and getting airbrushed on magazine covers as setting unrealistic expectations. Caitlyn is by no means unattractive but I don't think that her looks are the most important thing to take away from her story.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't take anyone who uses the word "tumblrina/tumblrite" seriously.
This secret is a good example why.
Also beauty is subjective and in the eye of the beholder.
Stop shitting on her for her looks, you come off as incredibly shallow.

She looked like a rat before she transitioned and she still looks like one. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(Anonymous) 2015-07-27 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a trans girl myself, and I'm sort of two minds of it. On the one hand, I'm super happy that there are highly visible trans women in the media that (outside of the definitely-expected usual hatred) a lot of people are openly affirming and embracing and calling "beautiful" as opposed to the other choice phrases we're subject to. I love it.

On the other hand, it feels like the whole thing is also just reaffirming that a trans girl is only as good as her physical femininity and beauty, which is...incredibly damaging. There are so many girls (myself included) who got totally fucked over by puberty-- broad, muscular shoulders; slim, shapeless hips; strong jaw, perma-five-o'-clock shadow. And there's just no "fixing" that unless you have insane amounts of money for surgery (as Caitlyn does). We're still girls, and we should also be embraced and celebrated...but it's much more rare.

So...it's difficult. It's just difficult. But it does seem like things are moving in the right direction, and for that, I'm so happy.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-27 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
She could be on desperate housewives. not-my-type-pretty all the way. coming from a person who's completely disinterested. I didn'T even know who bruce jenner was, and I'm not gonna care much who Caitlyn(?) Jenner is.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-27 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
Remember the 18 year old trans girl who stepped in front of a truck half a year back because she thought she was too old to ever be beautiful? Have you considered that calling a 60+ year old trans woman who just transitioned beautiful isn't just for making some point to cis people, but an important message for some very desperate people? The world doesn't revolve around you. But I guess that's usually an idea the "majorities" of this world struggle with. Congrats for not letting the PC police get you down /s.
