The internet is a bit different from what it was 20 years ago.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Kilborn was on from '96 - '99. Youtube wasn't even born yet.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
aside from the internet being a lot younger back then, stewart had a much longer and more popular run which makes his episodes less likely to fade into obscurity

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Was Kilborn any good? I saw a clip of him and Stewart recently from back when he hosted, was wondering how funny he was.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
i thought his daily show was funny in high school, it was more of a spoof on local news, dateline and entertainment shows back then, but there is probably a reason kilborn faded into obscurity.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of curious to see how it compares, but I think Daily Show would be a hard thing to watch reruns of, unless there was some famous event or segment.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, he was good, but not Jon Stewart good, and the show wasn't really the same thing back then. When Stewart took over, it become a lot more political, a lot sharper and more satirical.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
You know, people say that, but it's not entirely true. It didn't really become that show until a little while into its run, after the 2000 election, and the Sept 11 attacks, and what came after the Sept 11 attacks. Obviously the only reason it was able to become that show was because of Stewart and his skill set as a host, but it took a while.

He was an unfunny sexist dick. His whole stick was smug superiority. One bit that made me cringe was when Jerri Manthey, of Survivor fame, was on--she'd just done a Playboy spread and while she was talking he literally shut her up by dismissing her to open up the issue and ogle the pictures of her. She played it off gracefully but it was incredibly--incredibly--rude. And I'm sure the whole time he thought it was funny, in that smug, fratboy, dudebro way.

JS transformed the show.

ETA: Just did some followup research--the Manthey appearance was on a different show, CK had taken over the Late Late SHow (and so was not on the Daily Show). Sam shtick, different show.

I'm sure Trevor will have a big audience at first because it's the Daily Show, no matter how terrible he might be. The first episode is going to have a ridiculously high viewer count.

I watched a bit of Trevor's stand-up stuff, and he is funny. But he's funny in a very different way from Stewart. I know it would have been tough to replace Jon by trying to find someone exactly like him, because inevitably, that person wouldn't match up. But Trevor just seems radically different. That might be okay, he'll make it his own and all, but I'm worried that by now the Daily Show just has an image, and anything different is going to rub people the wrong way. Him being non-American too could rub people the wrong way during election coverage and such.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but the thing I like about Trevor is that he is politically savvy and in touch with world events. So I think it's actually good he's going to be bringing a different perspective to the show.

Well the show didn't really take off until after Stewart took over, and also he's leaving the show on much better terms than Kilborn, so I doubt Comedy Central will be so "What? He was a host? Are you sure?" about him.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Comedy Central still has The Colbert Report site up, complete with videos, and that show's completely off the air. They might do a re-design of the TDS site, make sure the focus is on Trevor Noah, but I can't see them taking down all those clips. I definitely hope not.

But there are people who downloaded the Month of Zen (or tried) and I think they have at least some Kilborn eps too. I just started following a tumblr called bearsandballs, she has a lot of rare footage it seems. But then she literally wrote a book about TCR.

IA, and I also think Jon Stewart is popular enough that it's in Comedy Central's best interests to keep his vids up regardless. (Jon could have his own section, but the site will be revamped with a focus on Trevor.)

Not really a fair comparison. Jon's show is wildly different from Kilby's.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Kilborn did a few seasons (there are plenty of Daily Show fans who weren't even born during Kilborn's run) and was kind of funny- Jon Stewart is utterly beloved, and he made spoofy satire into something many many Americans went to for legitimate news. I think the difference is obvious, and it's kind of strange that you didn't come to this conclusion yourself. No offense intended. You don't have anything to worry about.

Kilborn was a douche that I'm sure the Daily Show production people are happy to bury, and his version of the show was a COMPLETELY different beast from Jon's. Since I assume it'll just be some stylistic changes to account for the different style of the new presenter, and Jon didn't burn any bridges, I don't think his episodes disappearing is something to worry about.

This.

I was at a taping of the show in the last year or so of its run with him, and I was sitting in the very back row next to the sound guys. Every time Kilborn opened his mouth and said something, one of the sound guys would say to the other, "He's such an asshole," and anyone else from the crew who happened to be passing by would agree. Everyone seemed to hate him.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Kilborn also called one of the show's executive producers a bitch in an interview and was more or less fired. They have reasons to scrub his existence from the records.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Not surprised given that he up and quit on Letterman (when he was doing the late late show) with almost no notice to take the Daily Show job.

wasn't that lizz winstead he called bitch and then she eventually quit because of that? i seem to remember kilborn stayed with TDS for about a year after that happened.

I'm not sure what one thing has to do with another, OP. Kilborne's tenure at The Daily Show hasn't vanished from distribution because of Jon Stewart taking over, it was never in wide distribution because it was broadcast in the mid to late 90s and topical news shows generally don't have the same staying power as say, a sitcom.

I LOVED CRAIG KILBORN'S DAILY SHOW. So I was really glad he got the cameo on Stewart's farewell episode. ♥

And while our catchphrase for The Daily Show is still "When The News Breaks -- We Fix It," Trevor's Daily Show will be different to Jon's, just like Jon's was different to Craig's. But give him a chance and some time to settle in. I gave Jon one, and it certainly paid off.
