Neckbeards, MRA, TERFs, SJW, bronies?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever run into any of the above in person? I ask because I have never seen one, but I don't often go to places where the above groups are said to typically gather like conventions or college campuses.

If you have run into any of the above or know someone like that in person, what were they like? I'm not doubting any of the above are internet phenomena, I see them on the internet all the time. But do they live up to the stereotypes in person like they do on the internet?

Re: Neckbeards, MRA, TERFs, SJW, bronies?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I've met people who have extreme tendencies in those directions, but no one who fully embodies the stereotypes.

Which, you know, is what you would expect.

OP here

Me too, which is part of why I'm asking. I've never seen a 'typical fedora' even if I've run into sexist or entitled men, for example.

Plus lots of the extreme stereotypes on the internet like our resident radfem are probably only pretending to be those stereotypes for the purposes of trolling...

Are these groups even significant outside of the internet?

Yes, used to be friends with what would be labelled TERFs and SJWs, and no, they don't live up to the stereotypes (gosh!). Yes, there's some rabidity on certain opinions but they're well-rounded people who are nice to people they like, have a sense of humour (varies in quality), and have a self-reflexive sense of their own beliefs. The trolls imitating them or reporting on them make out like they have no sense of irony or self-awareness.

OP here

Sorry, I think you misinterpreted me. I wasn't trying to insult anyone by labeling them anything.

The question was more regarding whether these supposedly 'stereotypical' people existed at all or these stereotypes had any RL basis... or whether it's only people internet strawmanning each other like they usually do.

I've met a Communist. Does that count? (He was basically Huey Freeman down to the hairstyle.)

One of my friends turned into a radfem. We have not talked in years.

I have male friends who were into MLP, but I don't know if they are bronies...?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes to the MRAs, though (surprise!) they weren't nearly as mouthy in person as they are online. In person, they were just bitter older white men who were having a lot of problems adjusting to the fact that things weren't going 100% their way. They'd gotten a divorce and had to pay child support but their kid wasn't speaking to them... it's all the fault of those damn feminists!

My uncle is both a neckbeard and an MRA (as well as being a libertarian). He's completely out there and whenever the family gets together we get into long arguments. Although, the one thing we actually agree on is immigration because he adopted a kid from another country so he could come here for school and I think that made him actually see sense on that one issue.

I roomed with a female brony for a bit by chance. Definitely socially awkward and probably fapped to furry porn, but otherwise pretty cool and easy to get along with.

When I was about twelve years old, my father was friends with a guy who'd gone through a divorce and lost custody of his children. When we were over at his house, he mentioned to me a scientific development they were working on to synthesize sperm, and I joked, "Maybe we can get rid of men altogether!" He then pulled me into a separate room and treated me to an hour-long lecture about misandry, how awful and sexist women are, blah blah blah. Not a good impression, guys!

There was a brony there the last time I got together with some friends. He had just spent hundreds of dollars on MLP figures at a convention. Another one of those friends is a furry but I've known him since middle school. I forgot what his fursona is. It hasn't come up much in a while.

I had a cousin who at one point wore a sort of old-fashioned hat (a derby?) and that may have overlapped with him growing a neckbeard.

He was married at one point to an old-school MLP fan.

I don't think he was an MRA, though.

This one time when I was on the bus, two guys sitting behind me were having a loud conversation about how they wanted to send atheist missionaries to third world countries to "counteract the damage done by Christianity and Islam" (their words, not mine). When one of them got up to leave the bus I took a quick look at him and I swear, he looked EXACTLY like a stereotypical neckbeard MRA. All he needed was a fedora to complete the image.

I've met a fair number of SJWs, fans of MLP, no radfems, and no MRAs.

I really don't get along with people who have very extremist views on things, so I tend to avoid them. The "SJWs" I've met were generally advocated for issues that specifically affected them and reasonable and open to criticism. The bronies were just people who thought the new MLP was funny and cute. All of the feminists I know are not remotely radical in their opinions or behaviour, and certainly not TERFs. They stand up for everyone's rights, not just white upper class cis women. Nor is anyone I know who stands up for men's rights (usually as part of a discourse about feminism, but sometimes when discussing specific issues). I don't think F!s would count any of them as SJWs, radfems, etc.

But I obviously wouldn't be having a conversation with anyone so extreme for more than a few seconds. Like, I'm not going to willingly have a conversation with a radfem who thinks I don't deserve agency because I'm a sex worker. Or with an extremist MRA who thinks my rights are somehow eroding men's.

I knew an SJW. He was literally exactly like they are on the internet. Never stopped ranting about conservatives, racism, sexism, US-centrism. Even to strangers. Unprovoked. I'm not kidding. And also like internet SJWs, he was the biggest hypocrite because he himself was extremely racist and sexist in that 360 degree SJW-like way. The only unusual thing is that he was a white upper-middle class straight male.

I've met all except bronies, though the term "SJW" didn't exist back when I met a few people who could reasonably be considered one.

I had a friend IRL who was a pretty hard core SJW but in person, she was super sweet and not particularly confrontational. Online, it was a different story.

I'm sure the stereotypes exist for a reason.

Been acquainted with a few neckbeards. My bf's first roommate was a hardcore brony, and still is from what I hear. An old friend of mine gleefully admitted he's a brony, but he may not understand the connotations of the word, as he's not current on internet trends.

Someone I know is a loudly argumentative MRA, and she's a woman. But her whole deal is that she takes "equality" in its most literal sense, so she butts into feminist discourse on tumblr and adds "what about men?" As many times as people have tried to explain it to her, she does not get it.

There was a guy with an MRA propaganda screed printed out and stuck to his backpack (yes, really) riding on the same bus as me one time. It was something along the lines of "you wouldn't assume all women are ____, you wouldn't assume all black people are criminals, you wouldn't assume all Germans are Nazis, so why would you assume all men are rapists?" He got off at the local Uni.

I have seen the very same guy since, wearing a fedora. No joke. I can not make this shit up. There was an actual fedora.

So, yes, I have seen one in the flesh. I also know tons of furries and bronies and I don't even care. My ex-room mate was a brony and he was exactly what you would expect.

To be honest, I had an MRA phase when I was a stupid young adult until I realized that they really don't give a fuck about sexual assault survivors, and are not at all comfortable with queerness.

I know a brony who is pretty much exactly what you would expect: wears trenchcoat, is severely overweight, beard on neck, supports GG, is a Sad Puppy, and hasn't gone on a date in years.

He has too many female friends to go full MRA, though.

Never once met a TERF, though.
