Everyone who's not a dick: We live in a rape culture.

Straight white males: But rape is totes a male issue too!

Why is no-one pointing out that these two sentiments are mutually exclusive. If rape was legitimately an issue for men, we would not live in a rape culture. we live in a rape culture because rape is first and for most a woman's rights issue. If rape was something men had to live with as a part of the culture, it would have been eradicated by now. Rape apology would not exist and rape would be universally considered indefensible. This is not a world we live in, we live in a world were less than half the population can and do shrug their shoulders at the concept of rape. We live in a rape culture because rape is a women's issue.

Before responding, please note I chose my words carefully. I am not saying rape is ok when it happens to men, just that rape is not a male issue.

Why do we have to do this? This discussion. Can we just agree that rape is bad and no one should be raped, and that everyone should stop raping everyone else, and stop fucking taking sides on this goddamn thing?

Re: TW Rape and references to rape culture

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with all of that, but I'm also really sick of men derailing a discussion that has nothing to do with them by pretending it does.

Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

In general:

Rape culture and individual instances of rape are distinct (though related) things, both of which are very bad. Rape culture is a feminist issue. But I do not think rape can be considered a female issue.

To reply specifically to something:

This seems deeply wrongheaded to me. The fact that we live in a deeply patriarchal culture that evaluates and judges men and women differently is in and of itself enough to explain the existence of rape culture. You don't need to claim that rape is not an issue for men to explain this. Culture treating male and female rape victims differently follows naturally from the existence of a patriarchal society. That doesn't mean that male rape victims don't exist. Jesus fucking Christ.

I was going to say the same thing, you said it better than I did.

Yes, but the culture treats women MUCH MUCH worse than it treats women? Which is why I say rape is not a mens issue.

"If rape was something men had to live with as a part of the culture, it would have been eradicated by now. Rape apology would not exist and rape would be universally considered indefensible."

Ahahhahhahahahhahahhaha

Are you serious? No

I've seen victim blaming happen to men constantly. There was a whole thread on this very comm about "things you can do to men without consent".

If people don't take rape seriously, it happening to men isn't going to make them.

Re: TW Rape and references to rape culture

Rape is a male issue though.

Rape is a tool of the patriarchy -- it's a demonstration of power (small example: "I'm going to rape you!" in video games or sports matches).

Rape can be used against men to threaten their power, to degrade and humiliate them -- hence why it happens in prisons or it's committed on enemy soldiers during wartime.

It's a tool of subjugation.

Rape can be used against men to threaten their power, to degrade and humiliate them Or in short to reduce them to the status of women. Which is why it is not a male issue. Men suffer rape as an extension of rape's primary use against women.

I'm not sure that rape is primarily a women's issue. Male victims are WAY less likely to come forward about their rapes. It may be more common than any of us know. Prison rape is also considered "hilarious" and not disgusting. Those things are both part of a rape culture.

I agree with your basic idea that rape also being a men's issue does not mean we don't live in a rape culture.

If rape was legitimately an issue for men, we would not live in a rape culture.

I don't think this is sound reasoning.

Like, if you look at Norse culture, rape was an acceptable thing to do to your enemies and slaves to shame them because it made them like women. "Real" men didn't get raped. This attitude is actually not far off today.

Patriarchy has "real" men, and those who get raped are women or like women. Male rape victims are ashamed, and made to feel ashamed. Patriarchy continues, rape culture continues, rape as something to do to women or those made to be like women, continues.

because it made them like women. hence why I say it's a womens issue.

This is a little tangential, sorry. But was their intent with the slaves and enemies to make them 'like women', or to make them 'not real men'? Since 'not real men' doesn't automatically equal 'women' all the time. It might in this case. I'm not sure.

Honestly if we're going to deal with the issue of rape we need to stop seeing it is a men's issue or a women's issue.

If we see it as only an issue for one gender then we'll only solve half the problem.

I really think ignoring the patriarchal roots of rape culture isn't going to help either, because changing the way that men and women are raised is key to stopping rape culture in its tracks.

Is this what you men, OP?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that rape isn't an issue FOR MEN (it very much is). It's that rape isn't a "male" issue because the rape itself is inherently meant to degrade the male victim and make him less than a "real man" or a "true male" in the eyes of the patriarchy.

If that's what you're arguing then I agree.

Let me be extremely clear about this: YOU ARE SUPPORTING RAPE CULTURE WHEN YOU SPREAD THIS SHIT. YOU ARE THE BAD GUY HERE.

Because you're flatly, and stupidly, ignoring the way rape culture actually functions in the real damn world.

Nobody, culturally, says that rape is just fine and dandy. What they SAY is "Oh, that wasn't really rape." They find reasons why it doesn't count. That's how rape gets excused in the real fucking world, you miserable little shit.

"Oh, she obviously wanted it, so it doesn't count as rape."

"Oh, she didn't go straight to the cops, so it doesn't count as rape."

"Oh, that guy couldn't possibly be a rapist, she must be lying, so it doesn't count as rape."

"Oh, he's a man, so obviously it doesn't count as rape."

YOU ARE THE PROBLEM. YOU. WHAT YOU'RE DOING RIGHT NOW.
