I like this picture and that you have nice followers. I've got nice followers as well and tbh I don't know where most of them came from. They must have just spotted me then... Never left? And the randomest ones are so nice.

Then I realise I seem to be that random nice follower to other ppl cause there's ppl I follow for one post and their interests change but I keep following cause I find their posts interesting and I like seeing how they're going.

Layoutwise... Eh, idk. I expect different things from tumblr and LJ. LJ is where you go for tldr essays and discussions. Tumblr is where I go for pictures and short discussions. They're interchangeable sure but the focus/reasons of their layouts are different so doesn't make much sense to me to compare. And naturally yeah ppl are going to favour one website over another.

It's easier to for people to follow others on tumblr since every post you make will show up in tag or search, or maybe people are reading the tags of certain post and like your commentary/tags.

Something I always wished for tumblr were the ability to create groups or maybe a forum for people who want to discuss in more detail.

My followers are nice, but I can't say that for the rest of tumblr. The amount of stupid anon hate sent on that site is ridiculous, not to mention the thriving anti-kink minority.

Yeah, the open-ness of tumblr community is both a good thing and a bad thing.
On one hand it allows you to easily find people who share your interests.
On the other hand your tastes are out there for everyone to see and some people can't resist not staying in their own lane.

some people can't resist not staying in their own lane

I have at least three fandoms I don't bother with because of this. The best is when they then have the gall to complain about others doing the same.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-18 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
I have anon disabled. I guess I admire people who are brave enough to open themselves up to stupid anons offering stupid opinions but why would you bother? Save your sanity and don't allow it.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I still don't like tumblr as a place for fandom for the same reasons as you, but the people are really nice.

I finally bit the bullet and started using tumblr seriously earlier this year. It's pretty much been a nice experience.

Though I did get some nasty messages from MRAs, lol

(Anonymous) 2015-09-18 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I closed my askbox because of that stuff. It just feels so fake to me that it stresses me out.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-18 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
No offense, you sound really cynical.

Nice messages feel fake? I guarentee you no one is going through the trouble to send you a fake nice message. Most nice anon messages are people who are shy but see you might be feeling down and want to lift your spirits. Followers send nice messages because they might consider you a friend.

But if you want to assume the worst that is your problem.

Seconding the above anon - no one is gonna go through the trouble to send you fake nice messages. If someone takes the time to send you a nice message, it's because they want to say something nice to you. What other motive would they have? This isn't RL where people have great motivation to be fake-nice to get favors and shit. Get the fuck over yourself.

I feel this way too. I appreciate the thought, but a nice message from someone who doesn't know me doesn't make me feel nice. It makes me feel like they want to feel nice for being nice to other people. I mean, if you don't know me, how do you know I'm pleasant and kind and all that you're saying?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-18 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed being on Tumblr for a while... but eventually the faults of its community started grinding me down too much. The spread of misinformation and the difficulty of correcting it was what got to me specifically (someone I followed reposted a cutesy definition for a virulently racist term with several thousand likes and reposts, and I doubt my explanation of its actual meaning reached more than a dozen people), but I've also noticed that the nice and loving community can, in some cases, turn on you rabidly if you set a single foot wrong. Obviously that depends on what community you're part of -- Tumblr's pretty big -- but it's depressing to see.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-18 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
That is not a tumblr exclusive thing. I see misinformation on the news all the time and people don't have the intelligence to fact check. Not to mention twitter, facebook, or wherever else...

As demonstrated by the above thread.

I'm glad you like it, OP. It's good that you've found people to connect with!

I enjoy tumblr too, but agree that the format hasn't grown on me too much. It's good for what it's meant to do (easy access to pretty pictures, short text posts, etc) but anything beyond that is kind of difficult. It isn't my ideal of a 'perfect' fandom space, but then again I guess there's really no such thing.

I'll always miss LJ, but I'm aware that ship has sailed for most. (Even if, funnily enough, I recently found someone on LJ to discuss one of my fandoms with.)

I love my followers too, but almost never have discussions on tumblr. It isn't so much that I don't want to, as it is I don't really know where to start; I'm a pretty passive tumblr user.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-18 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I feel exactly - and I mean exactly - the same way. ;__;

I miss the activity LJ and DW used to have so, so much...and when I got my Tumblr account it was literally to just see the pics of a certain fandom...and now I am on there multiple times a day because it's like a Fandom Facebook - constant updates, easy feed, etc. I miss the journal format so much though. I want more DW/LJ time. *sigh*

(Anonymous) 2015-09-18 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Though I have a lot of issues with tumblr I agree that it seems I meet people much easier over there. It's also easier to find people who share your interests or just talk to them anonymously if you are shy.

From what I remember of LJ everything was friendlocked and you have to jump through several hoops to join certain communities to actually meet anybody, some communities felt elitist and unwelcoming. I don't remember ever talking to that many people on LJ, all my posts were probably never even read I was just typing into the void.

Tumblr is a lot more open and encouraging to meet and follow other people. Also I know my posts will definitely be read by followers or people who follow specific tags since many friendly strangers and followers will like/reblog my posts or send me a message if I have questions about something.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-18 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I prefer tumblr people too, if only because it's not expected that you be friends with everyone you follow, and there aren't pages of angsty LJ era personal posts that I have to pretend to care about just so we can later talk about fandom. tumblr seems more able to separate themselves from their hobbies (or at least they keep separate blogs)

(Anonymous) 2015-09-18 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Or makes sure to tag so you can blacklist/Tumblr Saviour certain posts.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-18 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad for you, anon, but it's the exact opposite for me. Tons of people were nice on LJ/DW whereas tumblr is just tumbleweeds. I have over 600 followers, several I'm on good terms with, yet whenever I reblog a meme or something, no one answers :/

(Anonymous) 2015-09-18 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, the people on tumblr can be so nice.

But I just can't stand the format, so I'm not going back.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-18 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
You must've not ever pissed anyone off on Tumblr.
