That is one of the things that drew people to Max Max: Fury Road. The world was so damn bright!

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-10-12 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Evidently, Fury Road was in production hell for two years because climate change hit Australia and the locations used in the storyboard were covered in flowers.

Not so much climate change as one of the periodic bursts of rain that brings out the dormant desert life. Things are only going to get drier overall in most of Australia re climate change.

It's funny because Mad Max is a major influence on the Fallout setting and look. In Fallout 1 you actually get a dog by putting on a leather jacket with only one sleeve that makes you look like a certain Australian movie hero.

It's not missing the point. There are infinite possibilities for a post-apocalyptic world - neons and polished metals in a world run by robots, greens and bright flowers when nature takes back places humans abandoned, icy whites and blues in a permanent winter.

Fallout isn't brown because the world ended, it's brown because nobody expects better from a video game.

New Fallout is brown because Classic Fallout is brown. If anything, there's more color to the series since 2008 than there ever was in the 90s. And FO4 is practically a kaleidoscope.

I would argue that it's brown because it's set in the desert.

It's brown because Fallout 1 & 2 were brown. They were brown because Interplay was crafting a world which was interesting and quite different to anything that had featured widely in RPGs up to that point (some exceptions exist, etc.).

Fellout mod is the answer. It removes the green tint endemic to FO3.

There's also foliage mods that add a little bit of green grass (my preference) to lots of green with trees and shit.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
well, i have the most fun in fallout when i talk to people and do side-quests (and collect shit, I guess?)

though i don't think it's fun to aimlessly explore in any game, so.

While I agree that Fallout needs more color (I think FO4 will remedy this) and can be boring to look at, if anything was going to be a deterrent from me playing the game it wouldn't be the color scheme, it would be the inventory system. (And yes, I know there are mods on computer.)

Why, you may ask? Because I am one of those people that will spend five minutes going through all my junk, trying to find something to drop or repair so I can grab one more item. I get very hoardy about Bethesda games and it makes the game feel very repetitive at times, but I can't stop.

Sometimes if I see what I consider 'good loot' I'll drop a map marker and fast travel 'home', store my gear and weapons and travel back to pick it up. (Even if I already have four of said item.)

*sigh* I'll never run out of weapons and armor, but it's a sad existence.

I mean, there's also the never-ending quests that I feel compelled to complete, but even if I was in the mood to skip one I'd undoubtedly go, "...You know, there might be something useful around. I should check it out."

FU Fallout.

Heh...I'm the same way. (When I don't cheat and boost my carry weight to superhuman levels.)

And this is why I love the Weightless mod for Skyrim.

People can say it's a form of cheating all they want; I don't care, man. I get to carry all the things.

I do that too. It's worse in Classic Fallout because it's not organized by type. The only thing preventing it from being completely unmanageable is that there are fewer items to pick up overall (aside from weapons and ammo, which take up the bulk of the weight, it's mostly one-time use stuff, bit like an adventure game.)

To make matters even worse, there is no take-all button in Fallout 1 and you can only take 999 of a thing at a time, which is aggravating when you're dealing with large sums of cash.

But...they were not monolithic though. I found them genuinely interesting to explore. But then, I do like deserts. So there's that.

It seems weird to me that apparently a lot of people are hung up on broad color schemes as points of interest. Like yeah they can be nice but just because a game has lots of brown in it doesn't make it visually uninteresting to me. There can still be lots of things going on.
ketita: (Default)

[personal profile] ketita 2015-10-12 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's the repetition? When I imagine post-apocalyptic, I think that a lot of things tend to go the drab route. There's nothing wrong with a brown color scheme, but I can see it getting tedious.
Then again, I could be wrong; I don't watch a lot of post-apocalyptic stuff.

I really wanted to get into fall out but I just couldn't :( I dislike the style mostly, overly brown, shiny and just unappealing.

I'm sad because usually I love post apocalyptic but fall out has just been a giant nope.

Top reason I only play Fallout 3/NV with mods.

I don't mind it so much but it does get a bit samey when all post-apocalyptic stuff looks brown/dull, it's one of the reasons I liked the scenery in Enslaved and the Last of Us so much, they were brightly coloured.

I do like those two examples.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-13 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Fallout 4 looks pretty bright and colorful tho, so it's a change of pace at least. Also, the not all post-apocalyptic settings are brown, The Last of Us was bright green.

I'm laughing right now cos I just started New Vegas this morning. Brown for days!
