I'm almost in the same boat. I was around for the old days but I was mostly a lurker, so while the discussions were fun to read, I wasn't taking part in them.

I don't hate Tumblr like some people here but the format really doesn't work for me for having discussions and that's my favorite thing in fandom.

Dreamwidth never ruled tho.

DW is like someone built a ghost town purposefully. F!S is like the lit entrance.

I miss the LJ/DW days. A lot.

I was active back then...more of a reader than a writer, but I loved coming online and seeing like 1,000+ posts, comments, replies, etc. just waiting for me to read or comment or...whatever. It was really, really awesome.

I don't hate Tumblr. I don't love it, but I don't hate it. I definitely don't like that, in general, you can't comment and whatnot...that was/is the best thing about LJ/DW, I think.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-19 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I was extremely active on LJ. And I'm ten times MORE active on tumblr. It's the best thing to happen to fandoms, from my experience, and far easier to interact with new people who might otherwise feel intimidated by long-established communities.

Also lol @ you thinking you can't comment.

I'm forever salty about the fact that Dreamwidth didn't become the new Livejournal, honestly. It seems like after the Great LJ Fuck-up of 2011 (was it 2011??), people tried DW briefly and thought "meh, tumblr has pretty pictures."

Having a conversation there is so difficult. I definitely miss days of LJ threads.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It's also way more difficult to find good fic on tumblr. Most stuff that gets postest is low quality, so you have to look through a pile of garbage to find something readworthy.

So I skip tumblr and go straight to ao3. Which meanwhile has also an increasing number of badfic. I sense a downward spiral.

I don't get it, either. I got a DW account back when LJ started going south, but none of my friends were using it so it was like going to a hot new club only to find that people were still hanging outside the old, shitty club but not going inside and not moving elsewhere. Aaaaand then all of a sudden when people DID decide to go somewhere else, they went to tumblr or left fandom altogether. WTF, fandom...

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
My feelings are similiar.

I started hanging around livejournal when I still thougth that my English wasn't good enough to participate in an English-speaking fandom, so I mostly lurked.

And now when I finally feel confident enough to write in English the livejournal days are over and all that's left is tumblr. The irony.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm struck by how many people are saying "I miss the discussions even though I didn't participate in them". Effect, meet cause. Fandom on LJ died because it lost critical mass.

[personal profile] dratinis 2015-10-18 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm kinda surprised to see a lot of lurkers, too. I mean, I understand to a point; I lurked for a while before finally plucking the courage to jump into the discussions. But I guess all the talkative people moved on to tumblr or whatever.

I don't hate tumblr fandom but it's a very different beast. Fandom isn't what it used to be, for good or bad. (And there's some of both from my POV.)

I miss the Livejournal days too and I agree with [personal profile] dratinis that Dreamwidth could have been the new Livejournal, but it didn't turned out that way. The positives of Dreamwidth is that it has all the good things LJ used to have, plus it's ad free. Tumblr has pretty pictures and gif sets, but I miss the days when icon communities were active on Livejournal. On the topic of having interesting discussions, one needs to reblog or see if they're tagged/mentioned in order to join in the conversation, or visit their askbox, but for me, hardly anyone bothers with their askbox for discussions and that's what I miss on Livejournal/Dreamwidth is having discussions via a community or via my own personal journal about something I like.

I was around for the tail end of LJ's glory days for a couple of years. Then I had a nervous breakdown and took some time off fandom, and by the time I came back to it everything was on Tumblr and I was like "wtf is this?!" It's not so much the style of the site as it is the culture (though those are probably linked) - everyone is so young and it's just impossible to escape the "everything is problematic!!!" people in fandom these days, haha. LJ had its share of drama, but it seems like the wank was more fun to laugh at and it was easier to find your niche of chill people to laugh with.

I mostly miss roleplaying on LJ, though I have to admit I no longer have the time or energy for something that intensive. RPing on Tumblr just isn't the same and I've never really "gotten" it. Ah, well. I do have a pretty great RP group now so I can't complain... just, nostalgia.

....did you post this as 07. for a reason Case? Cause even if not....nice accidental little shout out to the year that basically began to kill LJ.

:C

I miss the LJ fandom days as well.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I was around, but I never participated in LiveJournal fandom. Now that Tumblr is the fandom giant I wish I could go back in time.

Why don't we launch our own LiveJournal or Dreamwidth revival?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-19 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
What I don't get is why a lot of the people commenting here can't start posting at LJ or DW, and maybe get some others on board? I mean what's missing from both those place is the people, and we are the people?

Tumblr in turn, would become just as much a ghost town as many other sites if people stopped posting, there's no law saying any internet site has to become more popular than any other.

Great Idea!

Ahaha I miss making icons for lj, meta, the fic and the overall sense of community. Nowadays I go to /a/ to get my fix, but I gotta dig between the ass and titties for discussion.

Not that lj was always puppies and sunshine, or that it wasn't scary joining in new communities, but once you got used to it, it was pretty fun.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-19 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I wish both could co-exist.

LJ/DW is way better for discussions. And I love those.

But Tumblr is much faster, there's always something new to look at. I remember just waiting impatiently for someone to make a new post on an LJ comm.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-19 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I was lucky and participated in LJ, very little DW. But yeah, it was definitely more active, and compared to tumblr, I felt more connected to folks back then.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-19 03:02 am (UTC)(link)

You're hearing it through rose-tinted glasses, anon. Most people ignore what was equally shitty about LJ/DW.
