Has democracy run its course?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Between my Prime Minister fearing a civil war if the far-right xenophobic party wins the next élections and me thinking democraties have not lasted long, do you think occidental civilizations will radically change how they are ruled? If so, what will it look like?

What do you mean by democracy?

I've been wondering about this myself, to be honest. I could probably go into a long tl;dr about this, but my short and concise cop out answer is "only time will tell."

Go into a tl;dr!

Ahhh ok! I'm actually getting ready to go out to do a thing but I'll hop back on in a bit to talk about it!!! Hopefully it's not too scatterbrained.

TL;DR about democracy shenanigans

[personal profile] dratinis 2015-12-13 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Before I begin, I’d like to point out that this is coming from the context as seen in the Americas. Though I try my best to keep up with what’s going on abroad, my personal experiences – and therefore, observations – are bound to the American continent. Also, I apologize in advance for lack of sources; this is essentially a jumble of thoughts that have been synthesized from information I’ve learned from school, professors, reading, etc. If I’m incorrect somewhere, please let me know.

Has democracy run its course? I’m not sure. However, it is important to think critically about a concept designed only for a privileged few. As it stands, there's still a lot that needs to be done. Much like in Ancient Greece, where only a handful of the population could participate in the democratic workings of the state, there are still swathes of the population who are disenfranchised and cannot vote. Alternatively, you have money taking over the system to the point that the only way to make your voice heard is through monetary means - which only a select few have access to in large quantities. With all of this happening, I think that if democracy is to be successful, it must address a few things: 1) divorce itself from capitalism completely; 2) empower marginalized communities; and 3) accept the fact that not everyone wants to be a part of a system that’s a crucial component of settler colonial states (as is the case for many indigenous communities. The last item may seem a bit out of place, but I do feel that it’s a crucial first step to addressing the brutality of the continents’ colonial past, and ensuring that we can allow communities most affected by it (read: indigenous nations) the choice of participating in democratic processes, or going back to pre-contact forms of rule and updating them for the 21st century.

Beyond that, democracy’s success will largely be dependent on how much effort each country is willing to put into addressing its past, so as to build a better future. In Latin America specifically, there’s been a long history of crown rule, followed by various types of dictatorships, which pretty much means that democracy is very much a work in progress there. 200+ years of gold-, and later, power-hungry assholes are very hard to deprogram from a continent’s psyche. It doesn’t help that a lot of the corruption in Latin America – indeed, ALL of the American continent – has its roots in benefitting a small but powerful elite. I would argue that this is a hold-over from our colonial overlords, as a “true” democracy should ideally serve EVERYONE and not just a small group (kinda like what was happening with the whole thing with kings and estates and whatnot in Europe).

Hopefully that all made sense. :S

We need true democracy. Attach wi-fi to our brains and auto vote on every election, every time, with a true majority winning. Before we do this, we need to cull the stupid from the population.

We need democracy. Because:
- all the other options are much, much worse.
- democracy is an endless process of improvement. Never optimal, but always striving. Which again is a thousand times better than the option.

Re: Has democracy run its course?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do you think the other options are worse?

All the other options except one are much worse. And that option is much better is me being in charge. Of course if you are a conservative of any stripe then that is going to be much worse for you personally. Oh yes, you will suffer like the Jews in Old Egypt, so you will.

Democracy is fine, it is the lake of a moderated press, which is held to account over its lack of truthfulness over the way it presents the issues. Between The Daily Mail and News Corp it is amazing anyone is able to make any sort of informed judgement. We could do with teaching critical thinking skills and compassion in schools too.

The press is a huge problem, but it's not the only problem. Corporate greed is IMO perhaps the biggest factor fucking us over right now (in the US).

Democracy is great. Democracy is just the idea of people deciding for themselves, not having things foist on them by a ruler whose power they get no say in.

The problem is with Capitalism. They are often conflated but not the same. It is possible to separate the two.

Re: Has democracy run its course?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here. I do think democracy is great but there are a lot of tension so it's not working as designed here. I believe however that capitalism should collapse because it's fucking everyone up short or long term.

Re: Has democracy run its course?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think if we stopped confusing tyranny by the majority for democracy then it would start working better. The nations that use proportional representation seem to be doing better, or at least have a more equal distribution of wealth and happier populations.

IA. Been thinking about this lately. The two-party system is shitty and corrupt, but not only that, the entire system of proportional representation in, say, European countries seems to be better than the way it's run in the US.
