Nostalgia Games

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Let's talk about the games we used to play as kids/teens/anytime older than now. What did you use to play? Do you still play them? Do you still love them? How well do they hold up?

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I replayed it about a year ago on the N64. It looked terrible but I still love it. I sort of want a DS just so I can play the remastered version over and over.

I played King's Quest, Myst, Seventh Guest, 11th hour, Diablo, Diablo 2, Crystal Key, Age of Empires, Age of Mythology, Zeus: Master of Olympus, Beyond Atlantis, Leisure Suit Larry, and Total Annihilation Kingdoms.

I still play King's Quest, Myst, and Diablo 2. I love the characters in King's Quest, and replaying the Myst games is like rereading a favorite book. Diablo 2 is a good mindless game to play when I want to do something while watching TV or something. Same with Zeus and TA: Kingdoms. It's just fun to build crap and then kill everything.

Oh, Beyond Atlantis II was my crack. Got it for Christmas one year and didn't get through it until Easter. Had dreams about the Rainbow path and the music from Xibalba. Loved Riddle of the Sphinx too.

I still have BAII and a small Win7 system so that I can still play it. It's still fun and challenging.

I played a looot of Supermario and Pokémon. Also Tetris. Last Pokémon I got was black but I never finished it.

I played Tetris and Pokemon too (on Gameboy). Last Pokemon I had was Crystal. I disliked that you can't really fill out the codex in the game itself but I'm still 'trying to catch them all'.

Might be a bit of an odd choice because I was a teen, but Tales of Symphonia. Mostly because at one point in my life, I'd play it for 2 hours a day after school... I invested a lot of time into it.
I still own the Gamecube version, but no working Gamecube. ;o; Newer Tales games have better battle systems but for the most part it didn't age too bad gameplay-wise. I still love the plot and all the main characters except Regal.

After that, Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island. afaik they are still awesome; they're at least spoken of fondly still. I don't own them and haven't played them in years, though.

I played Pokemon as a kid, but I never stopped playing Pokemon, so tbh it doesn't even have nostalgia factor for me.

Re: Nostalgia Games

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, why not Regal? Haha, he wasn't my favorite either, but I liked him well enough.

Zelos/Lloyd remains one of my all-time OTPs, though.

I tried replaying Breath of Fire II, more for plot than anything else.
It was wayyyy more difficult than I remembered it, for one - kept getting offed by random encounters (though the fact that the emulator on my phone keeps freezing does not help in the least).
The gameplay is also more boring than I remembered. I don't mind turn-based, but in the early stages especially there is just so little that you can actually DO that it sucks.

Pirates. Some of the other kids had a play fort and we would throw 'cannonballs' (gum balls) at the trees who were attacking us. My name was Jack (at the tender age of seven I didn't realize how piratey that was. Rock on, mini-me) and I had the best growl. Couldn't lob a cannonball for spit, but my growls were always good.

I used to play Wood Pirates with my brother and neighbors (we were pirates....in the woods). We invented this kind of volleyball/basketball/kickball hybrid game called H ball (because the players stood in an H formation....jesus, we were a very literal-minded bunch, weren't we) that we played in the street. My brother and I played with Legos, Lincoln Logs, Lock Blocks (we called them Block Blocks), and more "play pretend" games than I can remember. We also played Nintendo together -- Super Mario Bros I and III and Metroid were our faves. I also loved this game called World Runner, but my bro gave it away to his friend and that was the end of that.

The neighbor girls and I played Barbies until I was around 12. Like most girls' Barbie games, our scenarios were way more gruesome and lurid than non-Barbie-players could imagine.

I would totally still play Wood Pirates if I still lived near the woods.

I still pop open NWN now and then, and I have the EEs for BG and BGII.

I don't know if there are emulators for C64 or their ROM games.

Crash Bandicoot were my tops games as a kid, I loved(and still love) platformers and these had cute little animal-people to run around the world with. I loved the racing game they did to pieces, it was basically Mario-Kart but I didn't care, the courses were fun.

And the first Spyro game was another I loved, it was a game all about dragons, that alone was enough to make me want to play it and it so happened that that I adored the characters too. It is however about the only dragon game that didn't completely suck.

There are so many I don't know which ones to name...

But does anyone remember The Lion King game on Sega Genesis? God, I loved that game so much, but it was insanely difficult for me. I always died on the stampede level.

I remember really loving Yoshi's Story on N64 because of how pretty the graphics were, and all the brightly colored Yoshi's.

Super Mario 64! I'll always think of it as one of the best platformers of all time; there was so much to do! So much level variety! Fun secrets!

And Turok. Like, I was so fucking awful at Turok but it was a fun game, and I enjoyed watching my brother be better at it then I was.

Also Goldeneye 64. Was always fun to see who could get the gold gun first.

Then there's Dreamcast games like Jet Grind Radio (It's tragic there was only one more; such a unique, deliciously entertaining and stylish game), Sonic Adventure (honestly liked this better than old school Sonic games; raising and breeding chao was great too), Shenmue (BEFORE ITS TIME; MASTERPIECE) and Crazy Tazi (addictive like whoa). I'll add Space Channel 5 too for sheer craziness. (Also, the music was fantastic... And Ulala was sexy.) Those were the days.

I don't know why but I just suddenly remembered Sonic Adventure 2. I loved that game, especially the chao.

Jumpstart 3rd and 4th grade (Haunted Island version). I loved them as a tyke.

A game I love and have no problem with people calling terrible is Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy.

Mega Man V (Gameboy) AKA Rockman World 5, had since I was 8. Never could beat a certain Stardroid but I don't care because I'll beat that furball one day. And then...Dr. Wily's ass is mine. Yes. I have had that game for 20 years and I am unashamed of it.

Gunstar Heroes for the Sega Genesis. If my Genesis hadn't died, I would still be playing that game. I swear it pushed the Genesis to the limits at its time. I still fucking love it. Still. Fucking. Love it. With the 3DS update to it, I actually fell back in love with it.

The Lion King game for Genesis as well. Though it wasn't Stampede that got me. IT WAS FUCKIN' ELEPHANT GRAVEYARD and HAKUNA MATATA.

And the PS2 era DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi games...Somehow they hold up well to me? Well, as good as a PS2-era game holds up? Xenoverse still blows them out of the water but still.

If only the King of Fighters: Maximum Impact games would have aged as well...

I still love board games like Scrabble and Monopoly, card games like Uno and Solitaire, and as for video games, I will always stop to play an old PacMan or Tempest machine!

Sim City 2000, Baldur's Gate 2 EE and Icewind Dale EE.

The latter two may be updated versions with some minor new bits (mainly some new joinable characters) but they are still the same games I played way back in 1999-2002, and up until I got Win7. There's lots of warm nostalgia to them.

i'm still impatiently waiting for my BG1EE to get here. I'm sure that'd be a big dose of nostalgia too.
