People are allowed to not like looks, even generally-accepted-as-attractive looks. Because we're all into different things. We're all unique snowflakes with our own tastes.

Also? You need to work on your self-esteem, if people insulting other people has a direct effect on you.

I think part of it is that people mentally have separate categories for famous people you hear of on TV and in the news and enterainment and normal people. Famous people are held to a much higher standard, so you'll find people talking about them as if they're objectively ugly on a worldwide scale but what they mean is not as stunning as everyone else in Hollywood

TV ugly, so to speak

It's not a good thing but it happens

I guess I see where you're coming from. People are a lot harsher talking about celebrities than they are talking about people they know, so when you see someone 'insult' someone who you think looks better than you, you wonder what that person isn't saying to your face about your appearance?

They all do look like aliens. Congrats on also looking like an alien, OP. But then, 50% of the population must by definition have below average looks, so you're in good company.

I can understand not finding certain celebrities attractive, there are plenty that aren't my type, but it's the people who really rip into them or go on and on about how 'ugly' they are that baffle me.

It just seem so unnecessarily mean to me? But then this is the internet so I don't know what I'm expecting on that front.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-02 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It makes me uneasy too, anon. But on the internet apparently it's okay to put every thought in the world out there no matter how douchebag and mean-spirited it makes you. Judgey cruel people are gonna judge and be cruel.

The thing is that it's backlash. Any famous person who is remotely attractive gets talked about like they're perfect-looking because of the glamour and fictional character charisma, so people get annoyed at that and have to disagree with equal vehemence, when if it was someone they knew from work they just wouldn't notice or care.

My main problem with people talking about other people's looks all the time is that it has no real reflection on who they are as a person.

It's also irritating from a female perspective because women are more often defined by their looks and that's usually ALL people want to discuss when certain actresses are concerned. If we could start talking about people's other traits as much as their looks it probably wouldn't bother me.

An alien too! Cuz almost all of the women are sexy as hell to a LOT of people. So own your sexy ass alien-ness. I guarantee most of the haters look like an old boot sole, OP.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-02 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It's sort of funny. The people I've met who are most critical of so called "ugly" actresses or actors are actually pretty damn fugly themselves. In fact they tend to be a lot uglier than the actors in question. So...

(Anonymous) 2016-01-02 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
basing My self worth on my looks has always felt ...dumb. this makes some things I read about other women seem so cartoonish.

Aside from the redhead in the top left corner, I think all the women in that pic are gorgeous. And even the one in the top left corner isn't an UNGODLY HIDEOUS SHE-BEAST; just not my cup of tea. Have people really calling them all aliens? Sure, without make-up and flattering camera angles (and photoshop) they probably wouldn't be quite as jaw-droppingly pretty, but I highly doubt they'd be ugly, let alone inhuman-looking.

Yeesh. Celebrity culture has such ridiculous standards.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
They're all pretty normal looking. And any one of them would be considered a great beauty by some fans.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, OP, it takes a really small person to insult someone they've never even met, over something so superficial, thinking it somehow brings them to a level above said stranger.

Instead of being worried about what such a person might think about you, think about how much it must suck to be a person who can only find enjoyment in shitting on others.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's superficial, usually aimed at women, and mostly expressed in very hateful ways. I find it disgusting when people go on about how celebs look "ugly." It's just meanness.

The thing is, I find many actors and actresses far from attractive to me personally, but I don't go around shouting how ugly they are, either.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, most of the time they aren't even bad looking.

I don't wear make-up so I probably look horrible.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
People are just jerks. Tearing other people down based on stupid shit is what some people live for. Because they're jerks. And they're wrong.

I don't know if this will make you feel any better, but...

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes when people don't like something about someone else (a lopsided smile, a big nose, a snorty laugh, whatever), it's because it reminds of something they don't like about themselves. Anyway, there are also plenty of people who like the way these women look.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
So much this, anon. I really really hate the way people've been shitting all over Sarah Jessica Parker with that ridiculous horse face meme for like ten years now. STG some people just love picking apart anything wrong with women actors.

Maybe it's because of how unconcvential my standards of beauty are but wow those are some pretty ladies. Well okay, bottom left is pulling a weird expression and I dislike top right's hair (it's too... flat?). I don't really see a lot of discussion about looks in either direction honestly though, except Bridlebutt Cabbagepuck. Maybe because I'm not in any live action fandoms and don't give even a fractional shit about celebs?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
From my experience, it's mostly just backlash against how the media builds up and mythologizes the "otherworldly beauty" of celebrities. I think most of them are pretty normal looking (though Maggie Gyllenhaal is really unpleasant to look at, imo).
