Reality Shows

The Undercover Boss thread and the fact that I've been watching a lot of cooking shows made me want to start a thread. What are your favorites? Least favorites (especially if they aren't obvious ones)?

Cooking shows are generally my favorites. Top Chef. Masterchef. Chopped. Cutthroat Kitchen.

Project Runway is always a favorite. I'm loving this season of Project Runway Junior. The kids are so excited in a way the adults used to be but haven't been for the past few seasons. And Tim Gunn is always awesome and clearly is excited by these kids with a passion for fashion.

For a while I liked Mystery Diners. Then I found out it is faked. And honestly I should have figured that out for myself sooner. Now when I see an episode it just makes me cringe. Most of the time it isn't even a good fake.

COOKING SHOWS YAY! I love Australia Masterchef. I find the judges so much more endearing. ♥

I did not know that Project Runway Junior was a thing, and now I will have to check it out.

I've never seen "Project Runway", but I've seen Tim Gunn in interviews and he definitely seems like a really cool guy. I love the idea of him encouraging kids who want to get into the fashion world, that's adorable :).

I figured that there was no way Mystery Diners wasn't fake. The people on it just acted so poorly.

I love that show! I envy people who have enough disposable income to do this, and I also love judging their choices.

I always love when they say their entire family lives somewhere in the US but OMG guys we need to have an extra bedroom because you know everyone is always going to want to stay with us even though we have absolutely no where for them to sit and eat and our bathroom can't handle us, let alone guests.

Back in the 90s, there were a few reality TV series based on different eras in history. The first was 1900 House and I think you can find the full series on youtube. Here's the first ep:

And Edwardian Manor House was also interesting:

Also noteworthy was Pioneer House, set in the U.S.:

They were slightly wanky as reality TV tends to be, but still had interesting educational bits, too.

We like Say Yes to the Dress in my house. In college, I watched America's Next Top Model all the time, even though we knew parts of it were refilmed and not entirely truthful.

Hell's Kitchen. I have been watching for ten years and it's still just the funniest thing to me.

Also, Cake Boss. Also x 2, i'm not sure if this still airs, but something called Say it To My Face! Brought people's yelp comments to life and they had to tell the restaraunt owner how to improve. HI-LARIOUS.

Oh! I have some good recs that are technically reality TV, but not nasty at all. It's a group of historians and archaeologists who try to replicate the living conditions in various periods of history. I guess you could argue it's more documentary than reality TV but it's all very hands on. They did one set in the WWII era called "War Time Farm":

The Great British Bake-Off (marketed as The Great British Baking Show in the US because Pillsbury somehow managed to trademark "bake-off") may be the best reality show ever created. Lovely people happily making lovely food because it is a fun thing they like to do.

I loved Ace of Cakes. Everybody on that show was awesome. I really like Four Weddings and Say Yes to the Dress. I used to like Sixteen and Pregnant and Teen Mom, but I can't watch those anymore without feeling bad for the girls and their kids. Except Farrah. I have a really hard time feeling sorry for her.

Storage Hunters, I just like seeing what's in the bins though so I often watch it muted because I don't want to hear the fake drama and they show you how much everything was sold for without needing to hear it.

Two reality shows I really can't stand are Big Brother, because of all the stupid fake-drama and the fact that contestants are clearly chosen on a basis of how much they'll annoy each other.

And I can't stand the X-Factor, partly because I don't actually think a lot of the contestants are that great and I can't stand the humiliation aspect of it in the early rounds, it's so nasty.

I enjoy any of the Mike Holmes shows (not sure how many air in the US): Homes on Holmes, Holmes Makes it Right, Holmes Inspection--though his site manager, Damon Bennett left last year (or late 2014)--and I do miss Damon.

My sister tends to watch a lot of home reno/buying shows and cooking shows. Which I see cus I'm often in the living room. I like the Property Brothers (and I have to wonder if their clients ever watched the show--the first house they show is always out of their budget!). And most of the time I don't mind Love It or Leave It? I do enjoy Hilary and David snarking at each other. I also like Income Property with Scott MacGillivray. I hate the House Hunters shows, the clients are always so annoying.

I just generally don't like the cooking competition shows, though the junior chopped series wasn't too bad.

I don't watch a lot of reality TV, but I loved the reality challenge show The Mole (and Celebrity Mole.)

I also enjoy watching The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, and Dancing With the Stars, and some of the cake decorating competition shows from time to time.
