I think Americans should stay out of most discussions on the refugee crisis, because I don't think you guys actually get the scale of it and how much it can/will impact Europe.

Why do you think it will impact Europe worse than America?

Re: Controversial Opinions / Confessions

I've never said that, but I haven't heard of an American refugee crisis going on?

But as Americans like to point out, the US is large. You can drive for hours without leaving the state, while in Europe you're in another country by taking the wrong turn. Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad if Europe as a whole 'shared', but as it is countries, like Germany and Sweden, that's easily the same size or smaller than some of your states are carrying a lot of the burden.

We call them illegal aliens instead of refugees. And we have been dealing with the problem for a loooonggggg time.

Yes, as an American, my country doesn't deal with the refugee crisis in the same way European countries do (although we get more immigrants than other countries). But I have beliefs about refugee rights and human rights and the way they should be treated. That has nothing to do with my nationality and everything to do with my moral beliefs. Yes, it is going to be difficult for Europe. In my mind taking in refugees is still the right thing to do. Full stop. When it is a choice between countries having to spend a lot of money and deal with a massive influx of people and forcing those people to return to certain death or torture and the horror they face, in my mind this shouldn't even be a question. We don't leave innocent people in situations like that.

And, for the record, America should be taking a lot more than we do and we could also be sending money to Europe. We could be more involved and help a lot more than we do.

This is probably the most naive thing I have heard in a while.

I don't really care? Given what those people are suffering and what they are running from, nothing Europe is going to have to deal with comes close to that horror.

I think that a lot of Americans should stay out of a lot of discussions about international conflicts, because they invariably know less about it than they think.

In fairness, you could make that argument for any nation. Every country's history and economics and people will be different. Sometimes those differences are even huge within one country.

You could, but the US presence online is very pervasive, and they tend to dominate English-language internet spaces.
Also this thread is about Americans.

This goes the other way as well, of course.

Re: Controversial Opinions / Confessions

American here, and I'm confused because I feel like I've read/heard two different versions.

1. "Refugees are trying to get onto buses, there's too many of them, it's overpopulated."

2. "A refugee moved in with me and we're best friends now. It's cool."

Re: Controversial Opinions / Confessions

(Anonymous) 2016-02-05 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
And both are true. There's never just one story, or one official truth, because no nation - or EU for that matter - is a monolith.

A side note

[personal profile] feotakahari 2016-02-05 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Has anyone else noticed the degree to which framing refugees as dangerous or intimidating coincides with framing them as adult men? According to the U.N., men over 17 are only 23% of the refugee population, but anti-refugee politicians like Donald Trump will never admit that.

Re: A side note

(Anonymous) 2016-02-05 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well, considering we're not hearing about crimes perpetrated by refugee women and children, and I'm going to take a leap of faith in assuming those crimes aren't just being hidden from us, I hardly find that surprising.

True. But also in general any crime committed by a refugee (or a Muslim) is being treated as if every refugee or Muslim should be judged for it. Whereas they are actually committing less crimes than citizens of the various countries do and certainly less crimes than white people do. But we don't see similar crimes committed by white people treated the same way in the press. No, only the crimes of minorities, immigrants, and Muslims.

As an American, I hope that our political leaders really take to heart the lessons Europeans are learning regarding refugees.
