Wait until you notice trends in the slash fangirls.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
...what trend? most of the people I see in the fandom tend not to have hard set top-bottom preferences, so I'm not sure what you're aiming for.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
All the recent asspain about trans headcanons is really getting on my nerves. HDU tell me how I'm allowed to imagine the personal thoughts and feelings of fictional characters.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-02-20 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Well, when your trans headcanon is only because because of stereotypes and gender roles, there's a problem there.

I mean, people can headcanon what they want, but if you think a male character is trans because of his build and because he has a more submissive personality, that shit needs to be called out on, because that's bullshit. There are plenty of males out there with slight builds and submissive personalities who were born male and who also identify as male, so doing the same to a male character like that just reeks of sexism.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Whereas, I think your assumption that a headcanon-ing of a particular haracter as trans MUST mean that it's not only the only trans headcanon a person has but also that it has a damn thing to say about real-world thoughts is a problem. Moreover disallowing the trans headcanon of a masculine woman as a transwoman and vice versa erases those people who fit THAT body type. Or are you really going to try to say they don't really exist?

Also, fuck "call-out culture" and its fantasy that it can loook at one decision or preference and assume it knows everything about a person.

I think it's pretty well established at this point that it is a conservative estimate to only say that MOST non-trans people who make a huge deal about trans headcanons are the most gender essentialist people in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
+1. also a lot of ppl who identify as nonbinary, aka teen girls going thru their "im not like other girls"/"i like being referred to by he/him pronouns because it gives me the illusion of privilege" phase

(Anonymous) 2016-02-26 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
uhhhh what?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I can't do trans headcanons for sports anime. I'm unable to maintain a suspension of disbelief.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Why not? I think if you are fit enough to play then genitalia shouldn't matter.

I keep thinking back ot Mulan being my earliest inspiration for trans headcanons. If a female could go into an entirely male army and keep up, why wouldn't a similar situation be acceptable in fictional sports teams?

Yeah, things aren't as smooth in real life but that is why people use fandom as a way to explore the possibilities.

I'm wondering if maybe they meant because of the rampant shirtlessness? But they could be FtM and already transitioned, or MtF and not have undergone transition, so I can suspend my disbelief.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
this is going to sound fucked up, but yeah, no. Your views are way too simplistic

Japan is still pretty conservative when it comes to trans/sexuality issues. You expect me to believe someone who is biologically female would be allowed on a boys' team? like, yeah, genitalia /shouldn't/ matter, but it sure as hell matters in the real world.

Also, even negating those logistics, I was on a sports team in high school, and I am all too aware of how males are biologically superior in terms of agility and strength. I was on a running team, and there was one girl who was fantastic. She was one of the best in the state. She was an excellent girl runner. Still, she could never be as good as even a boy runner who was just considered "good." I've read fics where Oikawa is a trans boy...you expect me to believe a biological female could have such great strength and power? I would totally have to suspend my disbelief. If you bring up the argument of trans boy, using testosterone, how the fuck would that be allowed? That would be considered doping.

So, yes, I have a difficult time believing that a trans boy would not only be allowed to compete on a team but also be able to match the others in terms of physical ability.

That is pretty typical of fandom. Not really surprising

Personally if I were ever to headcanon a character as FtM it would be Hinata because his issues with his height. He keeps going on about if only he were taller everything else would fall into place. His whole theme of wanting to prove himself because he doesn't fit in physically and everyone always mocking him because of it always made the FtM headcanons click easier.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I like that. Well considered!

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same here. Hinata and Yamaguchi are the only two I feel really comfortable headcanoning as trans. Hinata has overt issues with his height, and and Yamaguchi has some self-worth and body issues of his own. Since I know on this community you need to write for EVERY EVENTUALITY or some asshole will call you out, I know there are plenty of cis guys who have these issues, and that not all trans men go through this, but being a trans person myself, I related personally to those things, and I know trans guys who went through the same thing, making it easier for me personally to headcanon these two characters as trans.

Honestly I get what secret!OP is digging at though, Haikyuu!! is kind of known for like...majorly stereotypical trans stuff. As much as people here are getting butthurt and like "HDU POLICE MAH THOUGHTS!!" (they're starting to sound like Reddit edgelords tbh), it's really, really disconcerting for me as a trans person to be surfing through fics and see ALL OF THIS in one fic:

#Trans!Girl Asahi #she's also demisexual biroromantic #Trans boy Nishinoya #Genderfluid Suga #Kenma likes to wear dresses #She's a demi girl #Trans boy Yamaguchi #Trans boy Hinata #Bigender Oikawa #Transmasculine Yaku #Nonbinary Kiyoko #Demiboy Yachi

I wish I were remotely exaggerating, but honestly I've seen taglists with gender related tags twice this long. So yeah, I got you if you're reading this secret!OP, I know exactly what you're talking about.

How dare people get off on gender stereotypes! Maybe if we call them out enough, they'll change what turns them on.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
How dare secret!OP have a realization that this shit is super stereotypical! Lets dogpile on them even though they haven't made any mention of judging people for liking it, only that they've finally realized that a fandom made up of mostly 14-25 year old cis girls can be really one-dimensional when dealing with trans issues! :O Imagine that!

Oh, wow. I was just thinking about making a secret about all trans headcanons in Haikyuu!! Great timing, OP.

I'm usually ambivalent towards trans headcanons, but in Haikyu I absolutely love most of them. It's just that most of the fic sucks. I read one good one (Hinata FtM) and the rest is mostly preach-y with a side of transphobia. Which, given how happy and feel-good the manga is, really isn't what I want from Haikyuu!! fanworks. :/

From what I've seen it's mostly Kenma and Hinata that get headcanoned as FtM. I personally don't care, I would eat anyone up as FtM and their teams just not caring and being supportive. I want to write fic where Tanaka is FtM and his looks and attitude are in part a defense against assholes who would make an issue out of it. And then it's a complete non-issue for the team. (And Tanaka keeps the attitude because Tanaka without attitude is like Volleyball without a ball.)

Also, Suga would totally top the hell out of Daichi if they stuck to rigid roles, please tell me the shippers aren't casting him as the uke.

Not secret!OP, but I have similar opinions and I've posted before in this thread.

I'm usually ambivalent towards trans headcanons, but in Haikyu I absolutely love most of them. It's just that most of the fic sucks. I read one good one (Hinata FtM) and the rest is mostly preach-y with a side of transphobia. Which, given how happy and feel-good the manga is, really isn't what I want from Haikyuu!! fanworks. :/

Mhhhhmmm. I enjoy most trans headcanons too, because I think most trans headcanons are pretty easy to do for a series like Haikyuu!! where lots of their backstories are really vague and told in tiny snippets, and they have a lot of issues that trans guys could struggle with. It's just like you said, most of the fic absolutely sucks. It's either mediocre porn where it's just obvious fetishism of either the state of being a "cunt boy" physically, or I've literally seen fic where I felt like they were fetishizing the actual state of being trans. I remember one trans!Tsukishima fic where it was just massively overdramatic genital dysphoria wise in ways that felt really, really disrespectful to trans men (he used a rubber glove to jerk off, the descriptions of his genitals seemed purposely gross, and it was just kind of a train wreck that I could easily imagine making young trans men dysphoric by proxy if they had the misfortune of reading it). Then the transphobia that happens is really, really not representative of how trans people are treated in Japan. It's a combination of bad research and just not caring about it beyond a few bullet points of the trans experience.

What Hinata FtM story did you like? Do you have a link? I'm really hurting for a decent trans fic in the Haikyuu!! fandom. :(

(I want to see a trans!Kageyama fic that doesn't suck too. I feel like Hinata is always cast as the FtM guy, seeing tans!Kageyama would be really fun.)

I would love a FtM Tanaka story holy shit. I'm actually a Taketora/Tanaka shipper (I'M NOT SORRYYYYYY), I would love to write fic with those two where Tanaka is a trans guy. They've both got some stereotypical masculine attitudes and I could see Tanaka being nervous to disclose to Taketora because he hasn't clued in to how much of a dork Taketora really is he's just like Tanaka after all, but Taketora doesn't give a shit because that's just him.

Also, Suga would totally top the hell out of Daichi if they stuck to rigid roles, please tell me the shippers aren't casting him as the uke.

Have you been living under a fandom rock!? D: Finding top!Suga fic for DaiSuga is like a 'mark the day on the calendar, we may never see it again!' type moment! It drives me nuts. Fandom took Suga as "team mom" way too seriously. >.<;;
