THIS

I love a good villain redemption arc. Redeemed villains are a few of my favorite characters in some canons.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-22 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. As cynical as I am, I'm totally a sucker for a good redemption arc, like Zuko from Avatar. Though, as someone with atrocious social skills myself, I sympathize with Peridot in all those episodes where she's basically a social klutz. It hurts, when people hate you and you can't quite figure out why.

+1

I like seeing the struggle but I also like seeing the heroes shun them at first.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-22 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they might forgive the redeemed villain, but trusting him is another story. That has to be earned. I've always cringed when the reformed villain gets aggrieved because he's not immediately trusted.

I'm kind of amazed anyone could read this with that font choice. I would advice picking more contrasting colors and increasing the size of the font. You can edit the line height of the sentences so that they're closer together, if you need more room. You can also add a drop shadow or strokes for greater visibility if you're going to go with a light-colored font on a medium or light color background.

yeah i was going to comment on this too.

Agreed.

I am a huge sucker for villain redemption arcs, not all of them are done well tbf so I can understand the frustration when that happens, but a well-crafted one can be so engaging for me to watch.

In this specific case, it all comes back to "Keeping it Together." The Cluster experiments were horrific, and when the episode first came out, no one knew what Peridot's exact role in them was. By the time it was clear she'd only studied and reported existing atrocities, the damage was already done.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-21 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Like honestly, have japser or peridot even done anything that bad?

They're worst crimes seem to be unquestionably following the diamonds orders, which considering the place they were raised seems like self preservation.

I agree, and honestly, I think that's why Peridot's redemption worked (or at least has so far).

I wouldn't want to apply redemption to every villain ever, but I like it when it's done well for the right characters.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-21 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people on Tumblr have said everyone who's supported Homeworld is irredeemable because Homeworld is imperialist and redemption for any of them is a "slap in the face" (hate that phrase) to people whose countries are experiencing imperialism today! Oh Tumblr.

I just gotta wonder if they feel the same way about every other one of the million things where the antagonists' goal is "Take Over the World/Galaxy/Universe."

I don't think it's a far stretch to imagine that Jasper and Peridot helped in someway to take over planets. They may not have immediately gone down to scrap with locals, but all of this is just kind of inferred, so.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-21 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only seen the SU fandom hate, bash, and demoralize Jasper in this regard.
Idk like half of the fandom has this giant weird hate bonner for her.

I think most people like well-written villain redemption arcs.

The problem is they aren't actually well-written most of the time. Regina from OUaT is a perfect example.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-22 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
And Hook, and Rumpelstiltskin, and whatsherface the Snow Queen, and and and ... it's OUAT. It was all downhill from season 2. To be redeemed, characters have to feel remorse, repent, apologize, try to make amends, and not keep doing it. And it would help if they were all held to the same standard. I don't even like Regina much, but Hook's being lionized for failing to kill Emma's entire family, in the same way that he was seen as not really a villain by a lot of his fans because he never managed to kill any main characters despite a lot of effort.

+1 - I literally came to this thread just to make this comment and now I don't have to.

YES, YES, YES.

I love it for all villains too. If I actually saw a good redemption arc for any villain I'd enjoy it to its fullest.

Too bad Steven Universe is just about the only fandom I've seen it for. Even my favorite Transformers series didn't really have a great redemption arc when it could have...

*cough cough* ATLA *cough* Zuko

(Anonymous) 2016-02-21 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't agree with you there. I'm tired of redemption arcs. It's cathartic to hate a villain, and I hate that I can't do that anymore because they're secretly tragic or actually good underneath all the bad shit they did. There pretty much are no straight-up irredeemable villains anymore, and I want them back.

All I can think is that my recent venture into Forgotten Realms uncovered an at least partial villain redemption. I'd probably have to read the books though to get a full assessment of how redeemed said villain was.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-22 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
It seems to be hugely influenced by DBZ and other anime, so I kind of knew going in that a lot of villains were going to be redeemed. Besides Goku was anyone in DBZ NOT originally a villain? Probably the closest was Krillin, and he was a rival. Or, you know, the kids of the main characters might count.

Plus the whole episode with the centipedle was pretty much forshadowing that Steven's biggest strength and the whole point of the show is that he brings out the best in others.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-22 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
'too long' is NOT the reason I didn't (couldn't) read your secret, OP. Please, PLEASE, if you're going to have itty bitty text, pick a font color that's readable against your background image. I like reading long secrets and getting people's viewpoints on stuff, but I was getting a headache with the little yellow words starting to blend into Peridot.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-22 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Theoretically, almost any villain could be redeemed; what makes a villain irredeemable is that he doesn't want to be. Or rather, he might not like the consequences of being a villain, but his ego is too much invested in his villainy; he's been justifying himself for so long that he doesn't know a different way of thinking and isn't up to the task of finding one. Rigidity is basically part of the package with them.
