(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 12:45 am (UTC)(link)I also like the hint that the other Avengers are sympathetic to Steve's POV. You never know how intention translates into the final product, but I feel like they're focusing on the right things. I'm just worried they're too invested in upending Steve, and will take him to places I won't like.

I do think the second trailer gave too much away though.

Re: Movies
(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 03:35 am (UTC)(link)Zootopia
The first is that I finally understand the point of 3D animation. With stuff like Toy Story, I thought "This is so much uglier than 2D animation." When they got up to Tangled, I thought "Well, it's almost decent now." Zootopia can make every hair on an animal's body move like real fur, and I have to admit hand drawing could never replicate all the detail of this style. (Now make it efficient enough that you don't have to spend up to 100 hours animating a single frame.)
The second is that I spent a lot of this movie going "Yeah, they went there." I've seen bolder takes on prejudice in film, but never one that dug so deeply into all the little slights and offenses of everyday life. Every major character either shows or is subject to discrimination, sometimes in ways so subtle they're easily missed unless you pay close attention, and most are both victim and perpetrator as their social context shifts and they enter positions of greater or lesser power. It never lines up to a tidy little condemnation of one "side" or another, because dividing the world into an "innocent side" and a "guilty side" is part of the problem!
I'm afraid that second part might make the movie sound humorless or self-important. It's not that at all. It's just working within a context where acknowledging the subject matter at all can step on toes, and it has to be careful and thorough in order to handle it properly.
