[Ghostbusters remake]

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
After seeing the trailer, I am pretty meh about this. I like the cast (or at least the actresses I know) and I like the work the director has done with said actresses. I even like how cartoony the ghosts look.

But, I don't know WHY they decided a remake was the way to go. Having them be a different Ghostbusters group (maybe in a different city) would have made more sense and ruffled less feathers.

And I don't like how they've made the one black character a black stereotype ("Oh hell naw" REALLY?).

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
She's not a stereotype. She's playing the everyman (woman) character that Ernie Hudson played in the originals. (At least that's what came over in the trailer/press.)

I think I read Melissa McCarthy was originally supposed to play Patty. If she says stuff like "Aw hell no" and slapped people, I guess no one would care.

Is that a good thing?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Great, now let's wait for everyone to do like they did with Frozen and demand a boycott because of the racism, because that'll definitely show studios that we don't want racist movies, not that we don't want movies about women, because after all, people also demand boycotts of racist movies about men ALL the time... wait.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-21 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm torn between saying she's a stereotype and seeing that she's a lot like black women I know. I'm trusting Leslie Jones to walk that tightrope between good portrayal and stereotype but, most of all, I just want her to be funny.

I agree that the originals are pretty meh. They are sort of fun, but not amazing. I don't care one way or another about the remake. I'll go see it solely for Hemsworth as the secretary. But that's the only thing I really care about.

I'll admit, I saw 'The Real Ghostbusters' before I ever saw the live-action movies (Slimer in film scared the shit out of me as a little kid, lmao), so when I finally saw them, I was kind of underwhelmed. So I'm basically going into this movie with a clean slate, and I thought the trailer had some promise to it.

But I'm still firmly on the 'cautiously optimistic' bandwagon -always thinking to myself, 'Please don't suck, please don't suck...'-, because for me, it all boils down to the cast having the right chemistry with one another. Also if the jokes don't rely too much on cheap shock value, but we'll see.

Kek.

I bet you were one of the defenders when it was first announced screaming about how the only reason people were saying it was going to be shit was the all woman cast and everyone who had worries was a neckbeard.

Triggered much.

My impression is that people think it's just bad in general. So bad that it's irrelevant that that cast is all-female.

Honestly, I'm ready for 90% of the remakes coming out this year. The only one I have no expectation of is Pete's Dragon.

I'm the same tbh, I never liked the original movies and I con't care about the remake at all, though I'll probably end up seeing it since the bf likes Ghostbusters so I do hope it's fun so I'm not bored in the cinema.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The IDEA of ghost busters is and was great, but the original stunk like a slimer. The remake will probably be better.

I'm actually kind of hoping I like this better than the original. I watched the original late, having missed it as a child somehow - and I was not very impressed. I found it kinda cringey, tbh. But so many people love it that I keep feeling like I'm missing out on something... so I kinda hope that this will be enjoyable.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
i like the original. in fact i'll even make a case for ghostbusters 2 not being too bad.

but these movies are *not* this fucking amazing nerd property that is soooo precious and needs to be protected from the vile hands of studio execs/sjws/etc.

it's just a decent '80s movie with the best in american comedy at the time. it doesn't need fanboy slobber all over it.

(that said, i don't care either way about the female cast or the male cast, but i do know that from the trailer, sony have made it look extremely cheap and pandering to nostalgia rather than standing on its own two feet as a decent standalone movie that explores the same storyline but with just a female cast.)

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I always feel like I'm in a minority because I didn't like the original Ghostbusters movie at all. Didn't like it at the time, gave it another chance recently and both times... meh. Bill Murray's character ruins this movie for me, the sheer obnoxiousness of his character put me off.

I can't get excited about this because I found the original to be such a let-down when I watched it a few years ago. Seriously so stupid, and I don't think I laughed once.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
If this movie was about a new team starting a Ghostbusters franchise in another city, or taking the mantle from the aging original team, or revitalizing the original franchise that died out in the early 90's, I'd be all over it. As it is, you couldn't pay me to see this.

Hopefully the studio will blame the possible poor box office on the fact that it's a remake, not on the cast.

This movie looks even more unoriginal than SW:TFA, so much so it went off my possible watch list as soon as I saw the trailer. Couldn't they have done something a bit new with it?

But I don't feel a need to get all upset about it, I'll leave that to other people.

I should watch the remake. I barely remember the original (or enjoyed it) so it may as well be an original movie to me.

A rainy day tired night kind of movie.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-03-21 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
idk about that, I saw Ghostbusters as a kid but didn't remember much except the Stay Puft marshmallow man, so when I saw it a couple a few months ago, I actually thought it was pretty good; I tried to watch the second one, but it sucked.

I'm not going to see the remake, I don't care if Chris Hemsworth is in it, it's not getting my money. I also don't care for McCarthy.

[personal profile] dahli 2016-03-21 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the movies where pretty cheese but also very nostalgic. The second movie was specially bad. I think I'll hold my tongue and see how it goes. Can't criticize something before it comes out, yeah?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-21 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
So much hate for the original lol. I loved and still love the original. Watch it every chance I get. I don't mind that they're remaking it beyond the laziness of Hollywood redoing another 80s film instead of doing something original, but I hope it's decent.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-21 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
The original hasn't aged well for me but I still like it, at least for nostalgia reasons. (GB2 is shit.)

I feel like the only person who liked the original and is genuinely looking forward to this new one for reasons that aren't about defending feminism. Why can't I like both?

Thank you, anon. I was a child of the 80s who never saw the movie the first time through. I finally watched it on DVD about 2 years ago, and I wasn't all that impressed. I tell people I didn't care for it, and they act like having a differing opinion can't possibly be possible.
