You should be wary. The internet is not a safe space.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding. It was never safe. Years before "cyberbullying" was even talked about, a forum troll threatened to rape my sister. He was mad at me and just trying to get me to shut up (we were arguing), but man, I thank God it was near impossible to figure out who I am.

Wow that's fucking horrifying.

I'd straight up screencap and report someone who threatened my sisters because one of them is a minor.

da

In a way, I was "lucky" to have been harassed very early on. Well, actually, hacked and harassed, but I learned damn quickly to zip my lip about my location and most personal details in a general setting.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure that forum troll would have followed up on his threat.

Not sure how this has anything to do with fandom. This is a generic comment about being in the Internet.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you. Just by mentioning words like 'BNF' or 'fandom' it qualifies? I don't think it should.

Am I just weird, or does this seem sort of sweet?

I mean I get how the anon thing might be a bit weird, but I'm not reading this as creepy. Mostly cause I can really imagine the situation of that awkward dinner where you're the only single person, and honestly I'm probably the sort of person who would let a random internet person tag along.

I agree. It reads to me like someone trying to be nice, not saying they seriously would come stalk the person if they gave them their address. I have tumblr friends like that. I've made posts about feeling undatable before and people have responded saying they'd date me. And I've done the same for other people. It is just a way of being nice and encouraging people.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
it read as a harmless flirt to me. I mean, unless the anon did have access to the person's name, location, and face, they're completely unable to act on it and knows it, so the end result is just friendly banter. winky face ;D

(Anonymous) 2016-04-20 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, me too. *shrug*

I am always shocked by how much internet personas have changed in such a short amount of time. Back in my day (ten years ago), you would NEVER post your name, picture, location, etc. That was drilled into our heads. "NEVER GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION!!!!"

But these days, everyone posts with their real names. They talk about where the live. It is crazy. I know it is probably mostly due to Facebook, but still. Crazy.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I agree, I remember someone putting up their address on Tumblr and they got a free pizza and it just floored me like that could have gone wrong is so many ways.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It weirds me out that so many people post their personal information online. I don't even feel comfortable having my full name on Facebook. I never would've dreamed of sharing personal info when I first started going online and I was horrified that my godchild had posted her personal phone number on her public Instagram profile. I asked her why and she said so she could get texts from her "fans". It took me a really long time to explain why this was a bad idea.

See, I don't mind it on FB because I have it locked down. But (for instance) my Spotify is tied to my FB so I don't share my playlists (that I want to) because then people would know my name. :(

Kids these days!

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-04-19 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah... I'd say both your first and second instincts are probably correct here:

1. Don't give your personal information out unless you're completely sure about someone (ie. you've met them more than once). This was true in the 90's and it's true today.

2. You're overreacting to a jokey comment.

That comment seems mostly jokey to me but I get where you're coming from, I'm from the internet age where you never divulged anything about your personal life online and it's strange to see how it's shifted.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The comment's a harmless joke, but not divulging too much personal information online is still the smart move. Even leaving aside any concerns about what random strangers might do with your info, it makes it a lot easier for people you know in real life to connect you with shit you might rather not be connected with.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That too.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-20 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I shudder to think how large a fandom footprint (fanprint?) I've left, not to mention how much wank and embarrassing kinkfic could've been linked back to me. Even now, some of it can (at least until the Internet Archive decides it doesn't want to keep up with certain sites).

[personal profile] dinogrrl 2016-04-19 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Not knowing the exact context of that comment, I read it more as a thing that's meant to be non-serious but is kinda toeing the line of inappropriate behavior for an internet stranger, especially if the person habitually posts comments like that.

But the thing is if it makes YOU uncomfortable, then it's not okay. "This comment makes my red flags go off" is the sort of thing you want to err on the side of caution for. You should always be SO CAREFUL about what sort of personally-identifying information you put out there. You really have no idea who sees that info and who doesn't understand confidentiality. Way too easy for info to end up in the hands of people you didn't want to have it.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-20 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that the comment was nearly as creepy as you thought for it to be, but yeah. I've taken care to not post too much about myself online just because of stuff like that, or because I don't want people to use things against me.

I got a half serious offer to be my housemate last night haha! I privately shrugged it off (if it was anon I would have deleted it

(Anonymous) 2016-04-20 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
this doesn't seem particularly bad? I tell my online friends what city I live in, they don't know anything beyond that tho.
