Casual/intense fan awkwardness

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone ever have awkward moments on either end?

Re: Casual/intense fan awkwardness

- Not so much anymore, but when the Harry Potter books were coming out, no one except the big fans ever knew half the characters. Including Sirius - no one who wasn't a big fan even seemed to care that much about Sirius. It was to the point where I just automatically simplified all HP conversations to the trio.

- Conversely, I've had huge Star Wars fan talk about the Expanded Universe to me. I never know what they're talking about.

When I met Lin-Manuel Miranda, instead of saying *whatever* the fuck I thought I would say, I said, with tears in my eyes, "You're my hero?" and he said "it's nice to meet you."

It was 9 degrees and I was very cold and overwhelmed and it was probably the best thing that ever happened to me

Awwwww. I'm glad he was so cool and nice about it :).

This would be me, too, if I met my favorite celebrities :p. I'd just babble out "I love your work!" or something like that.

I met an author I really liked once, and all i could say was hi. I didn't say how much I liked his books, or poetry, or how much I agreed with his talk before the signing, nah. Just hi, and smile awkwardly, like some fool. -___- My best friend was a lot better at than me. I still feel like an idiot.

Trying to hide my powerlevel at my previous work when it came to comic book movies, video games, and cartoons.

We all know I don't have a life, but no one needs to know how much I don't have one, thanks.

This is me at work too.

I heard someone talking about Babylon 5, which is one of my favorite shows and I would love to talk about irl, I just kept my mouth closed though I could've easily inserted myself into the conversation. I pretend to have no interests at work.

I told one person I liked wrestling and I kind of became a joke, so I don't tell anyone shit anymore.

Yeah, I started up a new job and they don't even know anything about me, except that I have dogs and I stay up late to work on "stuff".

I'd prefer to keep it that way, honestly. They're nice people, but I don't want to explain nerdy stuff to them, ughhhh.

Stuff like this reminds me how lucky I am with my programming job. I'm the resident obsessed fan/geek, but no one really cares about it since it's like, whatever, I'm a programmer. Everyone in the office has specialized interests.

Although I have had to reign it back for other random groups... It's easy to mask though; instead of auto-replying with side character X's name if I want to talk about them, I'll say "oh, wasn't there a character or something that did [insert vague plot relation/thing]" and if they reply with the right name, I'm golden and slide right into discussion. If they have no idea what I'm talking about, I keep the talk light and focused on the main characters only.

lmao, I know this well. At least you think to hide it.

I get too excited, and my level is revealed. I sometimes want to bring up fannish things, including fic, but I never am sure who is into it...so I try to be lowkey fangirl about it.

I did it once, and my friend narrowed her eyes and said I was one of "those people". At least she knew who they were, lol.

Some girl I went to high school with tried to get me to read the anime porn she wrote. I only sort of knew her so I have NO idea why she wanted me to read it. I awkwardly declined and tried to avoid her from then on.

I have awkward moments all the time because I'm an awkward person.

I get a lot of comments on my R2-D2 purse and all I really know to say is, “Thank you!" when people tell me it's cute and they like Star Wars.

I guess that's really all that needs to be said, but I always feel like I should delve further, maybe ask what their favorite film is or something. The problem with that is, they might think I'm “testing" them, so...

I had an awkward moment once when I was carrying a Wheatley Laboratories messenger bag, where a man said he liked my bag and it looked familiar, but couldn't remember what it was from. I said Portal and then I think I said, “You know, GLaDOS?" and immediately regretted it because obviously Wheatley was on the bag and I was afraid I would confuse him further, lol.

That semi happened to me when I was waiting in line for TFA, but the man was so excited to talk to someone who knew what they were saying ("You know about Lawrence Kasdan!") and thanked me for the good conversation when it was time to go inside. I don't think you'd ask about the number of people on Hosnian Prime or something pedantic like that.

No, lol, definitely not. I'm afraid as much as I like Star Wars, I'm not all knowing and wouldn't expect others to know tons of trivia or be extensively informed on obscure info either. (It's awesome if they do and I'd be willing to listen, but hey.)

Having brief fandom conversations is fun and it helps when excitement and a friendly nature is involved, but it can get cringe worthy if someone asks you about something you have no clue about.

I'm not even a fan of Star Wars but I like the idea of an R2D2 purse anyway.

When I met Ian McKellan, I just stood there and gaped at him. That man has a lot of charisma, it was like a small bomb going off in the room. It took me an hour to get over it. So embarrassing.

My only celebrity encounter remains on of the most underwhelming experiences of my life: I once saw Andrew Lloyd-Weber order a jacket potato and coleslaw in a restuarant.

I used to work at Mrs. Fields cookies and I sold cookies to Bob Dylan and Stephen Furst. (they didn't come in together!)

I forget how many people have no idea the Star Wars EU even exists, let alone what happened and that now TFA makes it all non-existent.

I met Fran Kranz and he was just kind of awkward in general and didn't seem super happy. Meeting Alan Tudyk on the other hand? He was so super nice and excited.

Yes, anything to do with Marvel. I like some movies, but can't really be bothered by fandom. And it's pretty damned intense, this fandom.

(I did eventually watch Capt. America, can't be bothered with Iron Man or any of the TV stuff, and liked all the movies with Loki in them pretty well.)

When I see people going nuts over it I feel very awkward. On the one hand, it's really cool that people can fan out over it. It just seems like a lot of work for very little reward.

I once worked at a pizza place in the mall during the mall's Halloween event. I am pretty sure I creeped out a poor Sollux cosplayer with my awkward admiration.

I have gotten better since then!
...I think.

One time at a Suncoast in the mall I found a used subbed DVD of Sailor Moon (back when it was still OOP) and bought it and one of the girls who worked at the store started chatting with me about the show. At first I was like 'Yay, a fellow Sailor Moon fan :D' except she proceeded to follow me to the door and the discussion basically turned into her telling me the entire plotline of S, SuperS and Stars even though I said I'd already seen them (one thing I remember in particular was when talking about S she said 'What a lot of people don't know is that Rini's -- or rather, Chibiusa's -- friend Hotaru is actually Sailor Saturn' and I had to bite my tongue to keep from saying 'Everyone knows that, because it's a *fucking plot point*'). I had to make some thin excuse to get out of there or she would've talked to me all day.

My brother unironically told me he thought Yu-Gi-Oh was deep.

I was so hard pressed to keep from laughing at him all day. Fun, yes. But deep? No, not for me at least.
