Asexual is fair read of her.

But I don't think it's impossible for girls of other sexualitys not to want to have sex with someone they like if they're not in the right mental and emotional headspace.

IA - I can see where OP is coming from and it's a valid reading.

Asexual or something else, as long as nobody insisting it's the One True Canon what's the harm

I agree with this. And I was functionally asexual for maybe 6 years because of mental illness, so I absolutely believe PTSD can fuck you up that way.

Same, and mine was due to trauma stuff. It can TOTALLY fuck you up, and Katniss had PLENTY of other shit to worry about.

I mean, you also have to remember that this is a novel series that the publishers wanted to market toward a broad audience. I remember seeing 11 and 12 year olds reading this book. In America, middle schoolers can handle death and violence apparently but not sex.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yep.

There's a family friend who was twin sons that age and we were talking about movies once and he mentioned not wanting them to see some particular movie, and he was quick to assure me that it wasn't because of all the violence, but he really doesn't want them to see a movie with sex in it! Which of course I think is ridiculous, but anyway.

The next time movies came up and he mentioned something about a movie being violent I said "But hey, as long as there's no sex, right?" in a really sarcastic voice, and he either didn't notice or chose to ignore the sarcasm and once again said that he has no problem with them seeing something no matter how violent it is, but it better not have any sex.

It's just really bizarre to me.

That double standard is very deeply entrenched in American culture. So deep that most people would never realize it on their own, and even if it's pointed out to them, they're likely to get defensive about it rather than having an epiphany about how as a society, we're okay with seeing peoples' heads blown off, but even consensual sex between adults is a huge no no.

You people need to do research

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
You people are a bunch of moronic prudes. Wow. Of course American kids can't handle that kind of shit. Most kids can't. But not in the way adults think. What is it with people who think "oh we should let kids watch porn and teach them about sex when they're three because they're totally enlightened and never impressionable!" There's so many damn feminists out there who think that children should be allowed to see sexual pics in their books or that "look at Europe! If Europe does it then the kids must be okay!" Just because some young male was exposed to porn at a young age doesn't mean he'll automatically understand consent or respect women. Just because you tell kids about sex doesn't mean they'll just go "oh" and move on with their lives.

This whole stupid situation isn't a one way street where America is wrong and everyone else is right. There's two arguments that you people would learn if you actually spoke to Europeans. Many of them think America is puritan and many of then think its a country full of sex crazed morons who put sex into everything.

It's almost as if everyone in this comment chain is like "I'm from the deep south, so if WE weren't taught about sex, NO ONE AT ALL was taught about it in this country."

*gives you coffee, a cold shower, and a Care Bear stuffie*

What is it with the obsession with making sure kids see sex???

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Let kids be kids. Holy shit. Also, people have stupid ideas about violence. This isn't some HBO show where people get heads blown off and it's graphic or some snuff film shit. It's a children's book. It's people attacking each other in ways that are so damn mild in comparison to what you'd see at some foreign art house festival.

Troll, please. Did you READ Hunger Games? There were kids getting torn apart and eaten alive by animals wearing the faces of other dead kids they knew. The movie had kids hallucinating and being stung to death by giant wasps and you get to watch Katniss prying a weapon out of her bloated, rigor mortised hand.

I mean, really, you can argue all damn day what's appropriate for children, but let's not pretend Hunger Games was a happy funtimes cartoon violence fest.

Enh, not gonna lie, my younger sibling (who is ace) identified with Katniss a lot, and absolutely LOATHED the romance. But it helped them process some stuff so you know, sometimes books/movies help even by accident.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Because if you don't want to have sex every day, you must be ace, right? Heck, depression killed my sex drive and I can't even imagine what living through a YA distopian future would do to it.

A shitty, dangerous, and very taxing life taking precedent over your sex drive =/= asexual. Despite what romantic comedies tell you, a lot of people don't react to stress by increasing their sex drive but rather the opposite.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

Katniss throughout the books is a traumatized teenager who barely manages to deal with the fuckd up things she's forced to experience. I find it very easy to see how romance might not be her top priority. If a depression caused by less lethal things already kills any sex-drive how must things have felt to her?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really enjoy Katniss much as a character, but as an asexual, I do appreciate this headcanon a lot. Please do not devalue us that see this.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
You can have whatever headcanon you want about her. I don't have a problem with different interpretations.

I only have a problem with the overly vocal part of people who treat their headcanon as canon and call everyone who disagrees with them "acephobic" etc. Not saying that you're doing this. But unfortanately there are so many people nowadays who can't accept interpretations different from theirs and try to silence opposite opinions by accusing them as some kind of -ism. (Again, not saying that you're doing this.)

This.

The "sexual people must think in and want sex all day" thing is one of the most infuriating and inaccurate ideas out there.

This is a good asexual headcanon.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there was a fair case for Katniss being asexual, because I agree, I was unconvinced that she was sexually interested in anyone throughout the story.

On the other hand, her being too busy trying to survive to be happy and "normal" is pretty key to her character. It's hard to know what Katniss would have been like if she had lived a safe, secure life and had a "normal" upbringing because her extreme circumstances have basically defined her characterization.

Well, that's what makes it a good headcanon, right? It's plausible and grounded in the source, and it's a legitimate reading. Doesn't mean it's the only reading, but it does work.

Really? What about the kiss on the beach, during the Quarter Quell? She refers back to that kiss in her mind, "that feeling I felt on the beach" or however it's phrased--it's pretty strongly implied she felt something physical toward Peeta at that moment.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"This was the first kiss that made me want another."

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Like...I'd put that down to her not being attracted to Pita Bread's bland ass before I'd put it down to her being ace?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Except for the fact that she gets really turned on when they're making out in Catching Fire?

"The sensation inside me grows warmer and spreads out from my chest, down through my body, out along my arms and legs, to the tips of my being. Instead of satisfying me, the kisses have the opposite effect, of making my need greater. I thought I was something of an expert on hunger, but this is an entirely new kind."
