Only I never interpreted it as dubious consent, but as provoking infidelity (until people started wanking about it). and people are allowed to find that gross, too, but multiple interpretations of texts are a thing.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
There's nothing to even suggest infidelity in the lyrics, though. It's all "I know you want it no matter what you say" bullshit.

This entire thing:

Ok, now he was close
Tried to domesticate you
But you're an animal
Baby, it's in your nature
Just let me liberate you
You don't need no papers
That man is not your maker

Is basically him trying to get her away from another guy to me.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
That's...really reaching. Sorry.

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2016-05-20 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not reaching, that literally how I understood it like the first 15 time I heard it until people started freaking out about it.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's reaching to me. I dunno how you're getting infidelity from that.

I don't know how people are getting rape from it, if you really look at the lyrics.

That IS what the song is about. It is a guy trying to steal a girl away from a dude. And basically telling her, "He doesn't control you, come on, have some fun with me and let's fuck."

I got that too, tbh. I never got that rape-vibe from it, until the internet felt the need to educate me. I always thought it was suposed to encourage me to be less of a "good girl" and loosen up a little, in a playful way.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
People who don't understand why people find the song rapey are frightening.

It's not reaching at all? Infidelity is actually a very valid reading of those lines.

Personally, I also find the song very rapey, but to say an infidelity interpretation is "reaching" is totally baffling to me.

Exactly. And there's even a paragraph later on that has "the way you grab me", o yeah, she's not an unwilling bystander.

To me it was always a song about a woman who is attracted to him, but is holding off cause she's involved with someone else, and he's encouraging her to cheat. But ymmv.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
"She was totally asking for it, man!"

Goddamn, meran_flash was right about you. You're disgusting.

Because, you know, wearing a cleavage is totally the same as actually initiating sexual contact?

And man, that wank is OLD. I didn't even remember the name until now.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt, but I've been lurking here for a long while, and I don't recall ever even seeing the name meran_flash. Maybe ayrt IS meran_flash. Back from the archives.

And once you've initiated, whatever you then do or decide is vitiated, right?

NO.

nayrt

I always read "the way you grab me/must wanna get nasty" as her "grabbing" his attention. So the assumption that all hot women he's sexually attracted too are "nasty" and secretly welcoming his attention was really skeevy. I assumed this because the rest of the lyrics seem to imply she's acting like a "good girl".

So that was my first interpretation, but apparently other people see it the exact opposite, where "the way you grab me" is his interest being returned.

I honestly never cared that much and the infidelity interpretation makes sense as well (even if I think the song is gross anyway) but apparently we're talking about this song again and I'm still confused about this.

Interesting! I always interpreted it as literal (like her literally putting her hands on him), but now I see that your interpretation is possible, too, and that does make it creepier.

Frankly I never cared that much either - I'm not a fan of Thicke, but I wont turn if off it it comes on the radio. Its catchy enough. I was just baffled at the outrage.

No. Women can't be sexually aggressive towards men. Nor can they make the first moves.
