Nerd Elitism

What are you an elitist about?
And what kind of elitism do you find most insufferable?

I find all elitism at least mildly insufferable. The idea that liking or doing the 'right' thing or liking/doing it the 'right' way makes you better than everyone else is completely baffling to me.

Re: Nerd Elitism

The worst are the people who are so elitist about not being elitist and finding it beneath them. They are the total worst.

I'm not into it, but lolita elitism is super hilarious to me.

This just reminded me of my anime fandom days when Dub name vs. Sub name was downright violent in its intensity. Sub Elitism ran rampant, which was interesting because when I first got into Anime fandom you couldn't just google and stream any show you wanted. Most people had to get their fix through dubs that aired on TV.

I find pretty much all nerd elitism exhausting, tbh. I used to be all "read the books or don't bitch!" but nowadays I'm like....no...go to a movie to see a movie and it should be a complete experience.

Re: Nerd Elitism

I find it insufferable when casual fans aren't allowed to exist.

On one hand, I get it. It's frustrating when someone says they also love something you do, and you start blathering only to realize by "love" they mean they've seen three episodes. Fine, but you can really love the show and not have it memorized, or the books, whatever.

By that same token, when I was in the Harry Potter fandom, I remember people HATED kid fans for asking JK Rowling "stupid questions." I mean, okay, we all rolled our eyes when the kids asked her what Harry's favorite cereal is, but... it's a children's/YA series. What exactly did we expect? (I include myself because I was totally snobby about it at the time. Not so proud of said snobbery, in hindsight.)

I'm not sure if any fandoms have that with kid fans now? I can see it hitting Star Wars.

I like trivia like "what is his favorite cereal" about characters lol

but yeah I agree with this. "hardcore" people shitting on "casual" people is as obnoxious in general fandom as it is in gaming.

Same.

It's one thing for the kid fans to ask cute random questions, it's another when an adult fan takes it too far. I've been to one too many Q&As where I just cringe.

Star Wars seems to love the kid fans I've seen so far. Mostly just how much they love the cosplays.

Re: Nerd Elitism

I suppose I'm slightly elitist about people who call themselves nerds without ever having been the subject of derision because other people identified them as nerds. ...In that I have an almost knee-jerk NO YOU AREN'T response. I'd never actually decide anyone was a fake on first impression, because how the hell would I know?

My rational self realizes that the changing definition of "nerd" is just a sign of the times and I should be a bit happier that people can be nerds without necessarily being picked on because of it. Also, I know it's a bit hypocritical of me because I was a relatively "cool" nerd for my last few years of highschool.

Just the last vestiges of being bullied rearing their ugly head, I guess.

Re: Nerd Elitism

(Anonymous) 2016-05-24 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're not really a nerd, because nobody made fun of you!!"? No. The prerequesite to being a nerd is to be nerdy about something. Reaction to your nerdiness has no factor.

Eh honestly I find most elitism insufferable to some degree. But my least favorite is lit elitism. People who are high and mighty about liking classic lit, YA, genre whatever. Y'all still look ridiculous, and i'm laughing at you while I read my fave books to enjoy.

I actually find anti-nerd sentiments (as well as anti "jock" or anti-prep sentiments) to be kind of hilarious especially when they're coming from someone older than high school age. Come on now, the whole world isn't high school.

I find any kind of gatekeeping pretty insufferable.

On the other hand I can't help but feel a small twinge of disappointment whenever someone won't try something new that I enjoy just because they think they won't like it. Because then, even if they do try it, there's always a chance they'll say they didn't like it - even if they did - due to the Will to be Right or simply having their negative expectations colour their experience. Is that elitism? People aren't obligated to try new things.

Fantasy fiction

It's just like... I really don't like most popular fantastic fiction and I don't think it's worth really talking or thinking about and, like, almost no one is even familiar with the things I consider the interesting parts of the genre. And it's a little frustrating.

I'm kind of elitist about people missing plot points and frequently unsure of how "justified" that is; i.e. "do I just have a better-than-average knack for understanding how the pieces of a story fit together, or is everyone else really not paying attention?"

I guess I find all kinds of elitism annoying, but especially any time people think you have to enjoy violent content, or just tough it out. I don't enjoy watching autopsies, violent crimes again women (or anyone else), adrenaline-pumping fair, serial killer stuff, or horror movies. I just find it nasty and uninteresting. When a show I like includes this kind of content, I seriously have to consider dropping it. I don't feel like that makes me a worse person, and I'm fed up with people who act like I'm stupid because I don't want to consume this shit. Like, is that all that exists?? Violence? We're just supposed to adjust and learn to love the bomb? No thanks. I'm not into that.

I silently intensely judge people who call themselves Star Wars fans when they just like TFA and just tumblog stupid headcanons and write fic with Kyle fucking Ren.

I do it silently because I know it is insufferable.

Lolita. The book, not the fashion. (Or the movies, I don't know those so good.)

Specifically, if you want me to rant for a million blog posts, claim that Lolita is about male sexual freedom. Or that it was Dolores's Haze's fault for seducing Humbert Humbert and that he's a tragic figure.

See, I had to write a PAPER for this stupid book, which means I have read a LOT of critical analysis about it. And so whenever I see the arguments above (which I have) I hit the roof and just want to scream, "DID YOU EVEN FUCKING READ THE BOOK?!"

Especially when I run into these arguments from high-falutin' literary types who you'd think would have basic reading fucking comprehension but APPARENTLY NO, they think you're supposed to justify Humbert Humbert's behavior and AAAAAAAH.

(Hey, you want nerd elitism, I'll GIVE nerd elitism.)
