Wait...the author is racist?? How? if they are not bothered by the casting of a character THEY created, what's the problem? Also, they are right. Hollywood is going to choose star power over 100% accuracy.

She literally said they could hire a white actress to play a half Middle Eastern character who definitely looks NOT white, and they could just dye her hair black and she'd be happy.

Take that as you will.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Nooooooooo.

This isn't even the case where you can be like "oh she can be interpreted as white" though. It is very repeatedly mentioned in the books that she really isn't.

I'm going to try my best to ignore this. This is why I try not to seek out extra information about authors.

What annoys me is that I'm pretty sure that person already knows everything that was said in the response. Just a pet peeve of mine. Someone saying "I hope..." and then someone else coming in and saying "well this is how it works in the real world" with a tone like they're imparting some unique wisdom when that first person is already aware of that information, it's why they're only hoping for and not expecting what they want as a matter of course.

She sounds like a writer who is justifiably concerned about money. We can be as annoyed as we want, but it's her IP and she has to worry about her life, too.

I'm not sure that's an assumption one can automatically make, though. Authors get a lot of mail from people who don't know how either the publishing industry or the movie the industry works. It happens all the time.

I don't think the author is racist so much as justifiably cynical about Hollywood and the entertainment business. None of what she said is news.

Iirc Kate's mother was some kind of Slavic and her father was Middle Eastern, so while you could mos def make a case for her not being whitey mcwhitepants, I don't think that casting a white actress would be out and out deliberate racism

the katniss thing will always irritate me because I'm beginning to think that a lot of people don't understand what olive skin is because it's definitely not an automatic indicator that someone is a POC (my family is filled with a bunch of olive skinned Greeks and if I went around attaching a POC label to myself, I would get a lot of eyebrows raised)

Apropos of nothing, I've long wanted the actress who plays Shaw (Sarah Shahi) on Person of Interest to play Kate Daniels in any kind of adaptation it could get.

On the other hand, considering there was recently that movie about the Egyptian gods played by white people, I hold out no hope.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah... not sure how that's racist. The author is acknowledging that Hollywood works a certain way in terms of casting for star power, and while that's not a great thing, it's certainly true.

I'm not personally inclined to call this racist, but it's tone-deaf as all hell. I daresay OP was well aware of the various reasons why a minority actress might not be given the studio support to acquire "star power."

That's not racism, OP. That's actually having the slightest hint of comprehension of how casting for movies and television actually works, and of just how much influence she'll have over the casting for any hypothetical adaptation of her works.

Unless I missed something, this is less "racism" and more "having a clue how casting works" and "practicality".

Can't see how it's racist.

If the original poster had just shared their hope, then it would invite the author to share their hopes on the topic as well- maybe disclose their dream cast. but the fan is clearly going into it with a demanding attitude, so it makes sense that she would nip the expectation in the bud for now.

I...do not have the slightest idea who this is or what book it's talking about.
Is the character defined as black, asian, middle eastern, etc.?

Eh. If you never paid for any of the books of "one of [your] favorite authors", then I doubt your favorite author is going to give a flying fig about what you think.

How is this racist? (Also, if you have one Slavic parent and one Middle Eastern parent, you could well appear white. Jenna Dewan-Tatum, for example.)

Are there a lot 6'5" actors feeling under-represented by Tom Cruise taking a role that could have been for them? I'm guessing not really?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-12 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds more like the author was being more defensive than racist although it doesn't really seem like the original commentator was doing more than expressing a wish than expecting the author to be involved in casting either.

I think it's a little ignorant of the author to compare a change in height to a change in race. But I also imagine it's a tough spot to be in to want your book to be made into a movie and yet having no control over how it's made.

Olive skin is generally on white people, and Last Samurai is about the beginning of mass Western contact so of course it's going to have white people.
