RNC/DNC (trigger warning politics lol)

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone been watching the Republican National Convention and the Democratic National Convention?

I really like oratory and love a good public speaker. That is totally a non-political opinion, I think there's an art to giving a good speech. Being liberal, I found most of the RNC unbearable, though I did try to watch some of it. I've caught most of the "big name" Democrat speeches though, and there have been some AWESOME ones. I don't know if it's coincidence or what, but I thought most of the Republicans were terrible speakers, and Trump cannot give a proper speech to save his life - how can anyone listen to him rant and think he has anything worthwhile to say?

The Democrats had some damn polished speeches though. Favorites:

-Cory Booker (didn't even know who he was but fuck his speech made me shiver)
-Michelle Obama (teared up a little)
-Bill Clinton (for all of the dodging the elephant in the room, I thought the speech felt genuine)
-and of course President Obama himself (fuuuuuuuck that speech was pure art)

Honorable mentions: Elizabeth Warren. Bernie's was okay, mostly just a rehash of his same stuff.

I'm excited to see Hillary's speech tonight, just because I really want to see how she'll play it. I think the earlier speakers have done a great job of emphasizing her platform and "putting cream on the Bern" but there's a lot riding for her on tonight's speech. Objectively speaking (no matter how much the haters try to claim otherwise) she is a very excellent public speaker and even though she wasn't my favorite candidate, she was always the strongest debater on either side in the primaries, but she's really going to have to come across as genuine rather than just smart.

Anyone else watch? What speakers did you like or not like? Any thoughts?

Obama's speech was incredible from a purely oratorical point of view. Absolutely incredible.

ayrt - that was my thought. How he brought in his own campaign's slogan, admired Bernie and his supporters while stressing Hillary's accomplishments, and touched upon so many issues while somehow convincing me democracy works and that we should be optimistic and that Americans share good values - just masterful. Plus, his speaking style is so great. I love his pauses where he just looks thoughtful.

Man, even when Obama was just a congressman, I noticed he could deliver a good speech! And I'm not even GOOD at that stuff.

(This was before I knew anything about him as a person. I looked him up purely because I saw his name on a list and was curious because it was unusual.)

Cory Booker is a great public speaker. I've watched him over the years and I think he's definitely going up in the world, the same way Barack did.

It seems like the Democrats as a whole have better speechwriters.

Re: RNC/DNC (trigger warning politics lol)

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I heard Cory Booker was one of the "candidates" for vice president - or maybe that was just media guesswork. But fuuuck I was moved by that speech.

And not that no one uses speechwriters, but it was reported that Obama was up until 3am the night before trying to perfect his speech. I think some or most at least contribute to their speeches themselves?

I wouldn't be surprised if Cory Booker was on the shortlist for vice president, but I think he needs a few more years in the national spotlight first. I think he's also a bit more progressive than Tim Kaine, which may be why Hilary went for Kaine.

I think the DNC uses speechwriters just to tweak the speech or more to edit the kinks. They just seem like better orators and more charismatic speeches. I've been moved by them this year, just like Obama's first speech in 2004.

I know a lot of liberals who don't like Cory Booker because he's perceived as being in the pocket of the big banks at least as much Hillary and Kaine, who both have that problem. But then he's progressive on other issues. So he seems to be a bit of the worst of both worlds to me, able to be attacked by both Sanders supporters and people in the center.

Also the Democrats had better goddamn speakers. Because of the complete organizational dissolution of the Republican Party as a discrete entity. I mean, seriously.

I agree with this so much. I think the Democrats are coming together cohesively to side with Hilary (as obvious by Bernie's endorsement of her) whereas the Republicans are still trying to tear each other down.

The Republicans' roster of speakers was pathetic. The best they could scrape up in terms of celebrity star power was Scott freaking Baio, Antonio Sabato, Jr., and one of the "Duck Dynasty" guys. Woooooo. I know there's bigger conservative celebrity names out there, they seriously couldn't find at least ONE of those to give a speech?

And then Melania plagiarizing part of her speech certainly didn't help matters, either (though I don't put the blame on her for that one, that's the fault of the idiot who thought that would be a good thing to do when helping craft her speech).

I agree with your favorites.

I liked Biden's speech too. I liked when he told everyone to stay quiet for a moment and really think. And of course he said "malarkey" again. That word already made me think of him because of the last vice presidential debate and now it's going to remind me of him even more.

My favorite moment of the convention was Obama's "don't boo, vote".

I definitely laughed at "malarkey" - that had to be intentional. It was a good speech, though I missed Tim Kaine's and I really want to compare the two.

And Obama had some great one-liners. I really liked how he handled Trump. On one hand, you don't want to give such a ludicrous candidate too much personalized attention, and you also want to stay classy. I think Obama handled that portion really well.

Tim Kaine came off a bit like a sitcom dad. He wasn't bad but I liked Biden's speech better.

I completely agree with you about how Obama handled Trump. I hope Hillary does as well at that tonight.

Joe Biden. Even his little segment that they showed before he spoke, caused tears to well in my eyes. And then when he was actually speaking, I definitely got a little sniffly.

She doesn't need to come across as genuine. Literally no Democrat cares about genuineness.

Re: RNC/DNC (trigger warning politics lol)

The Obamas are brilliant speakers. Absolutely brilliant. That's just an inarguable fact :). And they just always come off so damn cool.

I really hope Hilary gives a kickass speech tonight, too. I definitely think she's not going to ramble the way Trump did, no-I remember flipping back and forth between his speech and something else last week and after a point I was like, "Christ, he's STILL talking?"

I hear you on the RNC convention as a whole. It was...terrifying, to say the very least. I look at the platform for the Democratic Party, and the platform for the Republican Party, and it's seriously not even a fucking contest as to which one I feel more comfortable with and want to vote for. And I really hope voters in general can also notice that more and more over the coming months.

Re: RNC/DNC (trigger warning politics lol)

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm watching Hillary's speech, and... I just don't understand.

1) Everyone accuses Trump of fearmongering, but all I've heard for the past few years from so-called liberals is how terrible America is – how it's a patriarchy, how we live in a rape culture, how terrible we are for fighting wars all over the world, how America was never great to begin with, how everyone who's not a white male is so oppressed in this country. And now the Democratic party is like, "no, actually, everything is really great, and we have lots of reasons to be happy and hopeful!" I'm sorry, but I don't buy it! Not after the incessant victim narrative we've had crammed down our throats. FFS, you'd think we were living in a third world apartheid from the way leftists talk.

2) WTF does it mean that Hillary Clinton is a "change-maker"? What does that mean? Obama won the presidency in 2008 on a campaign of change, and it was so exhilarating. It felt like a revolution! I voted for him – twice! Because we needed change so desperately, and I believe him. I wanted to believe him. He made ME want to change MYSELF. He made ME want to be a better person. But Hillary inspires nothing in me. Hillary is the textbook definition of "status quo."

I'm so completely disillusioned with the Democratic party. I've voted Democrat since 1996, but I just can't this time. I don't know what this party is or what it's supposed to represent anymore. Other than thinking Trump is pure evil and a madman and must be stopped at all costs to prevent the apocalypse.

Also, Hillary Clinton is the most boring speaker I've ever tried to listen to in my life. And everything about her comes across as so disingenuous and pandering that it disgusts me.

Re: RNC/DNC (trigger warning politics lol)

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I don't actually see any disconnect between saying that America and Americans are terrible or (more accurately from where I'm standing) have things about them that are terrible, and saying that there are lots of reasons to be happy and hopeful--specifically, hopeful that those terrible things and those parts of all of us that are terrible can change for the better. I think that might be one of the differences between liberals and conservatives--liberals think that the best way to solve problems is to try something new, while conservatives think it's better to go back to the way we used to do things.

As for Trump, he is a fearmonger. He says America and Americans are great, and the only things preventing us from realizing that greatness are all these fearsome things like abortion access, environmental regulations, and people like Mexican and Muslim immigrants.

Liberals point to the flaws everyone, including them, need to overcome in themselves. Conservatives attack flaws in others that they supposedly don't share, and say if we only got rid of these laws or these people, everything would be better. We don't have to change. Everyone else does. So one side is a call for introspection and self-improvement, the other is a call to arms.

I believe everything you're saying about Republicans. It's why I've never identified as one.

But the picture you're painting of Democrats - and the one that the DNC is trying to promote - doesn't jive with the reality I've witnessed over the past few years. The picture I have is of so-called liberals silencing and demonizing those they disagree with, playing the victim, and blaming those with "privilege" for everything while never, ever admitting that marginalized groups sometimes work against their own interests and never taking responsibility for their own personal decisions when they can just point to a system of oppression as the root of all evil.

I honestly cannot connect in any way with what you've brought up.

For one, Democrats and Hillary aren't saying "America is perfect". The point is that the country has good qualities and they are emphasizing the values that are supposed to symbolize the country in the face of bellicose rhetoric that acts like we're broken. There are bad things that are happening, but we can work together to fix them, because we do make positive change happen. I'm not sure what's hard to understand about that. It's inspirational "we can do it" talk in response to Trump's much more literal fearmongering.

And what it means when Hillary is called a "change-maker" - refers to her accomplishments. It sounds like you haven't researched all about her history in public service, and if you'd even listened to a few of the speeches they lay out pretty clearly why they call her that, whether you agree or not. I mean, too bad Hillary doesn't "inspire change in you" but have a look at her resume.

Sounds like you were too disillusioned with Democrats and Hillary in general to pay attention to any talk of platform goals and plans, which were all discussed.

Re: RNC/DNC (trigger warning politics lol)

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
As to your first point, I don't think that pointing out injustices and inequalities and mistakes is the same as going through all that kind of thing that you describe (sorry if I'm not accurate with my words, I'm a little drunk). I think the picture that the Democratic Party is trying to paint here - and I think it is, in large part, an accurate one - is that we've, you know, improved and we keep improving. Which is noble. But it doesn't mean that we've reached the finish line, you know? Upwards and onwards, you know?

Anyway, I suspect your personal dislike for Hillary Clinton makes all the rest of this a moot point, but, you know, it is what it is.

You guys have any thoughts on Hillary basically being all "My momma shoved me back out the door to stare down my bullies, so all y'all little crybabies need to buck up and go back out there!"

what?

"She never let me back down from any challenge. When I tried to hide from a neighborhood bully, she literally blocked the door, 'go back out there,' she said."

The message is "you have to face your bulllies," and that's true and good advice, but this also sounds like a HORRIBLE expression of it.
