Mpreg

Opinions? Thoughts? Observations (of vibes and patterns you notice in the fic, etc)? Elaborate as much as you want!

Re: Mpreg

I'm sorry to say that I really can't stand it. I mean, I don't much care for pregnancy storylines in general, and then mpreg adds a real element of body squick to the picture.

I'm for it as long as they just gloss over the fact over how the baby is born. Let's just keep that mysterious (unless it is a C-section which is my go to method).

Re: Mpreg

A more meta thought, but I wonder what would happen, or which would be more popular, if people delineated between pregnancy kink and impregnation kink more. Since those are two different things.

I find it squicky, I'd rather it be tagged so I can avoid it and I'll backbutton if I stumble into it, but I'm not OFFENDED!!!!!!!eleventy-one!!! that it exists.

It hurts my brain a lil.

If I ever really needed, for the purposes of the story, a pregnant man, I'd.......probably just elect to write him as a trans man with a uterus. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

About the only part of mpreg stories I could understand possibly enjoying is the whole "Let's see how a guy would fare having to deal with all the ups and downs of pregnancy" aspect. Otherwise, it's just never been something I've had any interest in reading. I think the only way I could even consider reading it at all is if I loved a writer's work in general strongly enough to where I could trust them to do an interesting take on the concept.

That said, however, while it's not my thing, if others enjoy it and can be all creative with the concept and whatnot when writing about it, then hey, more power to 'em :)!

Re: Mpreg

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Seems wacky. can't wrap my head around why people write it, and I suspect there are a range of reasons (some of them not great). Only wanted to read it once, for the space of a single afternoon, for one pairing I don't even like.

Re: Mpreg

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
like i technically understand people write it because they want the pregnancy part of it. but anytime i happen to read an mpreg story i can't help thinking "just adopt or something, there are more reasonable ways to get a kid." it's way beyond my suspension of disbelief. Maybe aliens could get away with it but... i don't read much about them and pregnancy.

Don't like baby/pregnancy stories in general, and it's even worse when it's men getting pregnant, since they tend to pile *every* stupid pregnancy cliche possible on.

That and the whole 'omg, accidentally pregnant...my life is over...well, I guess i'm having a baby, no way would i ever abort and have the life i need to have right now!!!' It's everywhere in most pregnancy story-line fanfic, and doubles down in mpreg.

I like it when there's a mad scientist--or a mad wizard depending on the 'verse--involved, consent is optional and things go wrong.

Re: Mpreg

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
it used to squick me out, but I actually kind of like it now. But only the pregnancy part, weirdly. I typically don't like kidfic, so once the baby is actually born, I usually get kind of tired of it.

tbh, I've been in fandom for so long that there are very few things I won't read.

does mpreg body horror exist?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
as horror genre.

ex: 'something happens where some guy gets pregnant through magic curses or temporary mutations or whatever and by the time he realizes what happened, he doesn't have the necessary biology (any more?) to get the baby out safely for either him or the kid, even if they abort the kid, and now what'

Not fond? but then, I'm squicked out by pregnancy in general.

Even worse when, I dunno, their genitals are somehow adapted to birthing? Like, I'd prefer "Alien baby mishap thy have to remove by surgery" over natural birthing in this case.

On the other hand, I'm fascinated by it as a fandom phenomenon and how it got so big.

It is most fun when thrown in with a dose of slow-process genderbending. They get knocked up as a guy, but give birth a woman.

It's aight.

Doesn't really squick me.

Re: Mpreg

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2016-07-31 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends. As long as there isn't too much description of it's possible the guy is able to carry the baby, I'm cool with it. Like if the fic is "Sex sex sex. Pregnant!" Then suddenly one day there is fade-to-black and then a baby, I'm cool. I don't need to read about body modifications or the birth itself because I don't even like reading or seeing details about fictional or real women giving birth.

Most the time I'm "meh" about it, but there are specific cases where it really works for me. (Usually in series like X-Men, where it just seems more conceivable.)

If the writing is good and the fic focuses more on the emotional stuff than the physical, I might give it a shot.

I've always been intrigued by the concept, but I've rarely found a fic with mpreg in that really works for me. I know, I know, that means I should write my own, but..!

I think part of the "problem" is that I like both the impregnation and actual caring-for-baby aspects, and you usually only get one or the other in fics. Another point against me is I tend to only like fics where the pregnancy is true to the pregnant character's personality. (Like if they're a grumpy gus in canon, they're going to be grumpy when pregnant, and likely a gruff parent, not suddenly go all kittens and rainbows).

So, I'll just keep trying. Maybe one day I'll find a trove of mpreg just waiting for me!

I just....do not understand.

Though to be honest, I'm a 38-y-o cis woman who has never wanted children and finds the thought of sharing my corporeal shell with another life form pretty unnerving anyway, so I don't care to read about pregnancy and childbirth in fanfiction no matter *who* is involved. But mpreg is especially WTF to me.

I mean, cis men do not have a uterus, they don't develop a placenta...even if someone implanted an embryo in their abdomen, there is no organ to sustain its life, you know? You'd have to be writing in a hard sci-fi setting for it to begin to make any sense, and even then it's silly at best.

Sorry, I really don't like it.
