Romantic things for men

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
What romantic things can you do/get for a guy that aren't super expensive?

If I was romancing a girl I would pick her flowers and take her on a moonlit picnic walk and maybe make her something small like a bracelet? But it's my anniversary with my boyfriend coming up and I have no idea what a cute equivalent would be. He's not very sentimental and I am, and I've told him I would appreciate a big romantic effort on his part so it would be hypocritical if I didn't make a similar reciprocal effort.

Any advice, f!s?

Does he wear suits a lot? Cufflinks can be fun.

What's something he likes? Like a show or character or sports team or whatever? I always get my fiancé stuff that is tailored to their interests--with their favorite superhero, or a book I know they'd like. And then the romance is all in the presentation!! Make the kitchen table or his car or whatever an explosion of love and merriment. :)

I could get him a Jersey of our favourite sports team? Limited on presentation as I'm travelling to his house for the occasion though >

Romance is hugely, hugely socially marked as something that is not for men to care about or be interested in or think in terms of so it's hard. I'll try and wrote more when I'm not on my phone later.

I know :( to the point that he hasn't got a clue himself what he would find romantic :/ I asked him but he basically just shrugged haha

Don't be afraid to woo him!

Some romantic jewelry is guy-targeted - watches come to mind! And I think if you made him a nice dessert or something home-made like that, that'd be super cute. I also think the most romantic things on either side is someone planning a fun activity to do together - depending on what he enjoys, a boat ride? a show (something a step up from just a movie)?

Re: Romantic things for men

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
A watch. This is the best answer.

Re: Romantic things for men

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna try and make something that won't spoil on my journey to visit him (we're ldr and he wants me to go to his place for it so I'm limited somewhat.)
I also plan to research the city as I've never been before - new place he's just moving to - and see what there is.

Re: Romantic things for men

(Anonymous) 2016-08-03 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Just my opinion, of course, but I think stuff like watches, cufflinks, etc. are too expensive for a 1 year anniversary. Especially for a guy who forgets to give his girlfriend a Valentine's Day present.

Re: Romantic things for men

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
My husband (back when he was my boyfriend) loved it when I picked him flowers and got all misty-eyed and everything. He wouldn't describe himself as sentimental either, but... *shrugs* He'd also love a moonlit picnic walk.

Can you cook? Making a nice dinner and dessert is always good, IMO, because you get a lot more bang for your buck than you usually do from going out to a restaurant.

A nice belt or belt buckle is the first thing that springs to mind (and watches but im running on the assumption those are too expensive), but you can also treat it like any other gift giving occasion imo - just think about it personally. Like, idk, maybe get him a book he's been wanting or something like that.

Or of there is any food or snacks he particularly likes, you could get him that, or just take him to dinner.

People are going to list items and actions, so I'm going to suggest the rest: talk to him. Tell him you appreciate him and how. Compliment his physical appearance, tell him that he's attractive and how. Nice eyes, great smile, be specific. If he's like most guys, anything more specific than "you're a great guy" and "a nice looking guy" will stand out and be remembered because we get told them so rarely.

Does he have a favorite candy? If you enjoys certain candies/desserts, buy a few bars and stick them in a nice basket.

My dad loves scratch off lottery tickets so my mom buys that for him at every occasion.

Does he enjoy sports? Find some team themed items (scarves/hats/sweatshirts/t shirts, depending on your budget)

My bf likes chocolate, so I once went all sappy and bought him on of those tin hearts with (good) chocolate in them. He really liked it.

Sweets are nice, if he's into them.

Do you cook? Does he like food? Would he cook with you?

Serious cooking can be serious romance.

I usually make his favorite dinner, offer to do something with him, even if I'm not particularity interested in it (like watching a show he likes, but I'm pretty much "meh" about), if I go shopping, I pick up a little extra something for him.

Little things like that, I feel go a long way in the romance department. It shows you're thinking about him, and willing do things with him even if you're not particularity interested in it.

isn't a picnic already something of a romantic gesture women prepare for guys in movies etc?

aside from something more personalized I'm seconding others in the thread that he might appreciate flowers and jewelry anyway, if you present it with happy confidence

Ok, so I have no experience at all when it comes to relationships, but since you've mentioned you're in a long distance relationship, maybe something with that?

If you look around (on sites like Etsy) you can get customized stuff with both your cities on it, things like that. Or you could just get him something really specific from your town and personalize it. Go raid your local souvenir stand. Of course, that would be more fun if you've spent some time together in your city. Or if you're long distance, I imagine you spend a lot of time talking online/on the phone, so maybe pamper his laptop/phone because it's the thing that keeps you connected.

I don't know if any of these would necessarily be a hit with guys, let alone your guy. But none of these are too sappy, you can probably find something that he'll use/is to his taste and in your budget.

What are his hobbies?

Like I know I always appreciate art supplies. If he likes music, maybe an album or cd. Instrument accessory if he plays. Meteorites are coolio for space nerds. If he likes writing a fancy leather bound journal or maybe a fountain pen. Video Game? Good alcohol if he drinks. Swiss Army Knife/Pocket knife... doesn't exactly scream romance but guys seem to like them.

My husband's hard to buy things for, but this year I got a pair of really excellent audio headphones. He was in bliss - spent hours rediscovering his favourite music. Not an obviously romantic gift, but I honestly think I couldn't have done better.

In general, a good gift = something you know the other person likes/craves/is tempted by, but would never consider buying for themselves because they classify it as too big an indulgence.

Aw, that's nice of you to be thinking of your guy like that.

For me, it depends on the guy. Hubby actually WANTED me to write him love poetry. (I am awful at poetry, but he still loved the effort, I guess.) I usually take him out to dinner, we watch a big gay movie together. Sometimes we get frozen yogurt.

Bf, however, has me under strict orders: NO GIFTS. Except kitchenware. (He loves to cook.) He'll also let me take him to dinner, but he's like the culinary equivalent of that guy who snarks constantly through movies. I'll try and seek out things online that he'll like though.
