A lot of people agree with you, including me. Showing the "nobility" of suicide for people who can't live "normal" lives seems super fucked up. Too close to the whole fucking eugenics movement too...

I know people can overdo the whole "what is the world coming to, if this happens then everything goes to hell" but there's a certain aspect of it that is really, deeply troubling.

Assisted suicide, and glorified suicide, are very very problematic. Should we also glorify suicide for developmentally abled people because they "drain" society? It's very morbid.

My parents had a handicapped child before they had me. They were told by the doctors to just put her in a home and try again. (As fucked up as that sounds, nowawadays they mostly abort people with her condition.)

But her life has so far been valuable and fairly happy, and she's far exceeded any predictions about her abilites, too. She doesn't live as a vegetable in some home, forgotten and unloved. My parents didn't follow that "professional" advice, and they're very glad they didn't.

Rec Thread

Happy Friday rec thread - ask for things, rec awesome things, put the fandom in the subject line, you know the drill :)

I've only seen Million Dollar Baby, and that was a long time ago - but I recall the woman being completely paralyzed, not even sure if she could really speak. I'd think she would be in a lot of pain, too. I get what you mean about the implications, especially unfortunate if it implies that if she can't be a kickass athlete what's the point of living or something, but I also think if someone physically has a terrible quality of life - pain and limited-to-no mobility - that person choosing to end their life is a good deal different than someone simply in a wheelchair or whatever.

I've had people tell me that they would rather die than live like I do. And I don't even think I'm that bad off.

I think the number of movies that have a "disabled people will always overcome their disabilities and should always fight to live no matter how awful their life is (and will forever be)" far outnumber the ones that say "sometimes disabled people make the extremely hard decision to end their lives because not everyone wants to live the rest of their life disable or in constant pain".

I think portraying both aspects of disabilities are important.

Star Trek TOS

Need some good ol' original series flavoured Spock/Bones fic - rec 'em if you got 'em.

Yeah, but then some people have terminal diseases that result in constant pain. Or ones that will end with them becoming bed ridden with no idea who they are.

Why should those people have to suffer because of other people's delicate sensibilities?

Why does nobody tell you that embroidery is hell on your fingers????

Did you stop watching before Beta? The woobie Jasper crowd has more fuel, not less. The only way your views would get you in hot water is if you only hang out it the absolutely worst, anti-Jasper parts of tumblr, in which case you knew what you were getting into.

Personally, I love Jasper, but would rather have her be the honorable opponent than yet another convert to Steven's Crystal Besties, but redemption really seems like the obvious route at this point.

Soooo I had an interview on Tuesday, for an office job at a non-profit. I haven't heard back yet. How long would an organization like that typically take to let you know if you got the job? I assume that at the interview level, I'll at least get a rejection e-mail. I know I should be the mindset of "forget about it and keep applying for other jobs and let it be a happy surprise if you hear back" but I keep obsessing over whether or not I got the job. :-/ I didn't ask for a time estimation at the interview, I thought about it but chickened out.

Weekend Plans

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-08-19 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
What is everyone doing this weekend?

I am going to the zoo with my sister and nephew. This will be his first time there so I hope he has a lot of fun. The zoo we are going to recently had a gorilla birth so hopefully we can see the baby. Other than that, I won't be doing much other than chores and such!

This comment is probably way TMI, but I want to share my two cents about this... :)

I have a disease that deteriorates my eyesight gradually, until one day I'll most likely end up blind. It means I'll have to learn new skills to go through my day to day life and also fill that life with stuff I'll enjoy when reading will no longer be an option. I live in a country where I'll most likely get all sorts of support and a personal assistant and the quality of life won't drop horrendously even if I go blind.

And yet it's terrifying.

One of the things that help me get through the days is the thought that if I end up finding being blind unbearable, I always have the option to kill myself. It's not about being a burden or being noble, it might even be the coward's way out, but its something I'll be able to choose. It's not about thinking about suicide because I should, it's somehow empowering.

If I don't get a choice on whether or not I get blind, I get to choose whether or not I remain existing. Not that I actually contemplate suicide, but the fact that the possibility is there... It helps.

I haven't watched all those movies (just Million Dollar Baby), so can't really comment on the secret 'cause I don't know how heavily the whole 'disabled people should kill themselves' trope came through in them. But I guess I don't have a problem with suicide as long as it's a person's choice. And a disabled person can make choices too.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-19 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen any of the movies mentioned, so this comment is outside the context of those, FYI.

I think there is a HUGE difference between portraying suicide as noble so as not to be a burden to 'able bodied' friends and family, and suicide that's made on the personal decision of end of life care.

There are people (not necessarily disabled), but people with terminal illnesses--mental AND physical--people who live every day with pain and suffering who should be able to make the informed choice BY and FOR themselves if they want to continue their lives. Not because they think they're a burden on someone else (regardless of the fact that they may think they are or are not), but because they have no quality of life and no expected improvement in quality of life.

I don't think anyone has the right to say to someone, "You are suffering every minute of every day and there is no chance this will ever stop, and likely will continue to get worse, but you cannot make the decision to end your life because it will cause suffering for others."

Someone else's potential suffering does NOT trump someone's current suffering.

I found this YT channel recently and I think they are so cute. Little art challenges and sketch book tours and testing different mediums. Did I mention cute?

If you have amy other art channels to rec me, please do.

I'm not disabled, but there have been plenty of times when I've wanted to kill myself for many reasons, including being an emotional and financial burden on my family. I think the movies are pretty cheesy/lame, but I don't think there's anything wrong with someone who chooses the terms by which they die.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-19 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. While it's true that some movies portray serious disability as "worse than death", and some disabled people as dying along the way, I think there's probably way more media that portrays living with disability with the more heroic approach. Not that that isn't kind of obnoxious, too, but are we really short of media that portray people who live with disability more positively?

I think we just need more media that portrays disabled people as normal. Not heroic, not suicidal, not brave, just normal, where it's more or less incidental that they are disabled.

What is the prevalence of circumcision in Puerto Rico? Would a character who's in his late 20s/early 30s [contemporary setting] be cut, or uncut?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-19 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think suicide should be glorified.

But I also don't think, if a person decides they cannot live with the torment or pain or whatnot that they have, that we should vilify the option of "death with dignity" or erase it from the books.

If it's presented in a neutral manner as a personal choice I'm fine with it.
