Well, in that it's not just labeling 'anything even a little risque" as "gross." It's not about prudishness or childishness, it's actually a language trend that's attaching more force to those words (I guess it's an ironic use? Take that as you will). So even though taken at face value, I can see how it could be read that way, the spirit of the trend is much more critical and serious.

To put it differently, it's literally about using the words "creepy" and "gross" in a new way, with a slightly new meaning.

And man do I ever hate the propensity of that new usage. Not so much creepy because I still feel like it's pretty accurate for the way its used, but I feel like gross is way overused to a ... gross degree.

I think that's my beef with it. People with this attitude seem dead set on stomping out any sort of humor or playfulness or fun in the world for the sake of their high moral aspirations. And I just don't want to live in that super serious world, you know?

I think generally people take things seriously because they are thrown into confrontation with its seriousness, not because of some kind of pretense to moral probity.

Yeah, I know. I used to be a fun person, but the super seriousness of this decade has turned me into a pathologically unfun person, too.

I'm really not sure I know what you mean. Are you being sad that "this decade" has included more consciousness and critique of oppressive and harmful structures on a popular level, as discussed above?

I really enjoyed watching my oh-so-gross music videos and reading my oh-so-creepy power disparity fic and only being preached at about it by religious whackjobs who were easy enough to ignore.

1) entertainment media both reflects and reinforces real social structures, including oppressive ones, and imagining that it is created and consumed in a vacuum separate from those social problems simply because it's entertainment is stupidly naive

2) nobody is saying you can't continue to enjoy things that aren't progressive/perfect!

I don't think they see it as a choice. I think they see it as how you have to exist, as a moral being in an unjust world.

People seem to disagree with you but I get what you're saying and more or less agree. Power disparity fic for example. "Not your thing?" You go for it, different interests are no problem. "The whole genre is creepy and gross ew ew your kink is not my kink and that's soooo gross?" You probably aren't mature enough to handle NC17 fic.

Weirdly, I think the "gross" trend actually came about in reaction to the super serious world of tumblr, where ALL social criticism gets couched in really extreme terms and Everything is Problematic. The use of "gross" and "creepy" as words denoting real problems allows people to point out things like that without falling into the trap of tumblr-esqu SJW extremism.

I never thought about it this way but I think there's some truth to it. They are words that everyone can relate to.
