Hate to love- Peter Hale, he's the worst, but I love him so much

Love to hate- Serena van der Woodsen, she's the ~worst~ but the show expects you to love her. (Actually, one of my biggest issues is that, towards the end, I honestly had no idea what the writers were doing with her. I don't know if they expected the audience to sympathize with her or not because she was just so all over the place and wholly unlikable, which...was not at all how she'd started out, so I was confused and irritated.)

Love to love- Right now? Bertram Gilfoyle. Always? Marge Simpson. Agnes DiPesto. Hello Kitty. Ron Weasley. Luna Lovegood. Dan Humphrey.

It really is. And it's a nice size--small enough everyone "knows" everyone at least in passing, but not so small that it feels impossible to join. And people are super friendly and encouraging!

Weird stereotypes you've heard

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
The sweet tooth thread made me remember this: once at church a lady commented on how weird it was that my father likes dessert, saying "he's the only man I've ever known to have a sweet tooth!" I thought that was odd at the time, and I still think it's odd: surely liking sweet things isn't more stereotypically "feminine" than it is masculine?

What about you, f!s? What crazy left field generalizations have you heard people make about gender roles, nationalities, etc.? Not just stereotypes, but ones that truly make no sense to you.

OP

I felt the same with most of the earlier Marvel movies. The action was new and fascinating back then. But I realised when I was watching CA:CW those feelings had completely gone, and I was actually impatient to get back to the characters just talking to each other.

I didn't feel this way with Winter Soldier -- I still think the scene with Fury being stuck in his car was fucking amazing and lends itself well to rewatches. I don't know, Civil War's action scenes was just too much stuff happening all at once, and it just make it seem repetitive and unmemorable. Maybe I just like action when it focuses on fewer characters, IDK.

something like that, yeah. I'm also surprised at the turnaround--to the point that I think they must have had stuff lined up and ready to go before the first season even got released.

I'm having an awful one too, woke up at 4am in unbearable pain and took forever to fall back asleep even when I'd taken some painkillers and got a heat pad.

At least the painkillers have been working today though, but when they fade off, uuurrgh, nope.

It always surprises me how much I want to either see the bad guys on that show die a bloody death or drive off into the sunset to continue doing more ridiculous illegal things. Great writing.

I'm glad they left it with Boyd and Ava and Raylan and Winona separate. It would have been really weird to see any of them happy together after everything they did to each other.

I miss Raylan's old hat too.

He's very annoying, yes, but the show is worth watching anyway imo

Re: Canon but not Fandom?

[personal profile] nightscale 2016-09-02 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm only mostly in fandom for shipping so if I really love a show/movie but there isn't a pair I ship then there's a good chance I won't go looking in the fandom(this isn't always the case but it's the most likely one).

But for specific things I'm not even slightly fannish over:

Grimm.
Dead Space(I like the canon couple but not in an 'I must read fic' way).
Borderlands.
And I very casually enjoy Star Wars, I like the movies but I don't care for any fannish stuff for it at all.

Even if it were true that Steven is always right (not so, as mentioned by the others), that wouldn't be protagonist-centred morality - that would be an intelligent and moral protagonist (possibly one that's boring, but that's a whole different criticism).

Protagonist-centred morality is when what the protagonist does is right, simply because it's what they did. To keep this to SU, let's use the Sadie/Lars example others have brought up - if Steven's meddling had worked, or if Sadie and Lars's reaction was treated by the narrative as incorrect, rather than how Steven learns his lesson...that would be protagonist-centred morality.

Re: Ugh thread

I am having the worst period this month, I figured it would be awful this time around because last month was surprisingly okay, but today has just been god-awful pain mixed with boughts of nausea, I've managed to eat something but I barely have an appetite.

Hopefully I'll feel better tomorrow, or at least it will be something I can handle better.

Re: Weird stereotypes you've heard

"Women like sweets and men don't" is a really common stereotype in Japan (and maybe other East Asian countries but I don't know). Most people don't actually believe it though, and I hadn't heard of it until I went there.

All my teeth are sweet teeth.

I really like things with chocolate and salted caramel. Especially sweet frappuccinos with that sweet sweet caff.

I still need to watch season 1, but I've been getting side-tracked.

(Atm by Legion, everything is so new and shiny).

You finding the protagonist annoying =/= the show displaying protagonist-centered morality.

It's not so much "he's treated as being right" as "his wrongness doesn't get the weight that it should."

For Steven specifically, The New Lars is the worst offender. He suppresses someone else's consciousness and takes over their body, and it gets laughed off as Wacky Shenanigans, with only minor scolding? Eugh.

Compare that to the guy who hit on Stevonnie. The show treats him as the creepier one, even though when it comes to boundary-violation, Steven's human-puppeting is in a whole other league.

I love to hate Superman. My sister's asshole ex-bf was really into him so it made me hate the character.

Hell yes.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
My favorite favorite is probably brownies - so many variations that I love (made some excellent fudgy ones with sugar cookie dough frosting on Tuesday). I also love making and eating cake, pie (though not fruit ones, not a big fan of cooked fruit), ice cream, cookies, bars (blondies are awesome), candy (homemade and store-bought, Reese's peanut butter cups and licorice pastels, in particular), sweet rolls (cinnamon and other variations), pavlova, cheesecake, tarts, granola, doughnuts, cupcakes, whoopie pies, frosting, syrup, sweet butter, and probably a few other things that aren't coming immediately to mind.

Re: I think I need a new doctor

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
When you picked up your prescription, it should've come with a booklet all about the side effects and symptoms. Usually pharmacies make you sign something to certify that you don't have any questions about the medication you're going to take. Yeah, your doctor should've warned you, but you're also under some responsibility to research what you're taking.

Oh, gross. If OP wants to see women naked and raped and degraded why don't they just watch Game of Thrones?

If it was that bad for that long, why didn't you seek help or advice sooner? If I were you, I would've gone to the ER.
