Fantasy or sci-fi living?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Would you prefer to live in a fantasy world or a sci-fi world?

For purposes of simplicity, fantasy world is going to imply pre-modern, pre-industrial revolution society where magic exists and technology is limited. Sci-fi implies a futuristic world where technology is super advanced but there is no magic. Give me details!

Re: Fantasy or sci-fi living?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Sci-fi, for sure. Better medicine. Cleaner. Who needs magic when you have technology?

Re: Fantasy or sci-fi living?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly disagree about medicine; fantasy worlds can have better medicine, as healing magic can cure things that technology may never manage. I think they're pretty much on par if you're generalizing. A sci-fi world with a lot of germ warfare is going to be less healthy than a fantasy world with well-developed healing magic; while a fantasy world with witches who create plagues is worse than a sci-fi world with a medical tricorder...

Quality of life being equal, fantasy.

Sci-fi. If nothing else, I could probably get a job as an anti-transhumanism activist.

There's pros and cons to both for me.

Sci-fi pros: Medication, fast travel
Sci-fi cons: Everything is a screen/run by robots, every space suit I've ever seen is ugly, no one can hear you scream

Fantasy pros: Beautiful clothing, everything is castles and fields and wild animals, MAGIC
Fantasy cons: Medical care is iffy at best, burned at the stake as a "witch," not LGBTQ friendly, etc., EVIL MAGIC

Fantasy for me. That is, assuming I'm the one who gets to do the magic! If I don't get to be magical, and I'm just a peasant slogging away with poor hygiene and life expectancy, then I'll take sci-fi. I'm pretty sure sci-fi has a mandatory dystopian vibe with a corrupt government and all, but I figure I could get a good job piloting mecha, or something.

Sci-fi. Once tech gets advanced enough, it is like magic!

If there's magic in your fantasy universe, they're functionally identical. The only difference is aesthetic.

Not enough factors for me to decide. Is the pre-modern society still homophobic and sexist or is it not a factor? Is it medieval castles or is it at least up to Victorian era so I can have concepts of lighting and plumbing? How is the medical care? Can anyone use magic or just a few? Can the magic actually make up for lack of medical care and does it essentially replace industrialism? On the sci-fi side, is everything robots? Is it the creepy sterile plastic future envisioned by some or is it essentially the world as we know it now just with more space travel and moon colonies? Do I get green space and oceans? Has technology solved our problems or just worsened them?

Granted, aesthetically I prefer fantasy, but I also don't want to give up my flush toilets and live-saving medication.

Sci-fi, no contest. I'm a tech geek through and through. Advanced technology and medicine, sign me the fuck up.
Body modifications (limb re-growth, cure for blindness, being able to change genders back and forth, choose your own height and weight, getting rid of incurable diseases, 100% healthy babies, absolute dental hygiene, etc), brain implants that give you access to unlimited knowledge, vast options of entertainment, no poverty, trips to the center of the earth or deep sea and space travels, faster transportation, extinct species being brought back to life through genetic manipulation and cloning...

Magic is cool and all, but I like having simple rights like being able to go to public places with no restrictions, or marry who I want. (But then, I guess I could make up a fantasy world of my own so that wouldn't be a problem?)

Or just even being able to go to a store when I'm missing something. I don't think I could live without toiletries, or being able to choose what to wear. I have a feeling that were I to live in a pre-modern society, I'd just prance around naked.

If I have no choice but to choose, Sci-Fi. But I'd rather have my magic powers cake and modern setting eat it too.

Scifi, for the working showers, and toilets. That's assuming I get to pick the writer. There are some scifi worlds that are worse than medieval worlds for people like me. Nothing by Bradbury or Heinlein for example.

Sci-fi. Definitely sci-fi. I'm far too much of a sucker for advanced health care and hygiene to ever seriously consider a fantasy setting. Unless the magic I question keeps everything clean and healthy.

Fantasy. It is a hard choice because scifi tech is fun. But my vertigo would make space flight miserable. So I'll stick with fantasy. Plus, magic is awesome.

While I love the idea of having magic, especially magical cure-all potions/spells, ultimately I've gotta go with sci-fi. I love my modern comforts too much, and hey, maybe there are cures for what ails me in sci-fi settings, too. Also, if there are holodecks I could just roleplay having magic.

Fantasy, with an understanding that I imagine it as magic being used to make life easier and making up for the advancements a per-industrial society would not have.
