Not to mention they're so well-researched and accurate. <3 Just, so much went into them and it's all about the LITTLE details.

Mad Max: Fury Road. I don't think I blinked that entire movie. I am so glad that I saw in in theaters.

Also, when I was a kid I remember being amazed by seeing Pocahontas in theaters. My eyes hurt because I was just so focused on the screen.

Hugo.

It's a movie about early movies, it's a fictionalized (I'm guessing) story about Georges Méliès - the man who made A Trip to the Moon. How there is a magic and imagination in both watching and creating film.

And it's such a beautiful movie period. I really have to pick up a physical copy one day.

Requiem for a Dream is so pretty, but so sad, too.

Magnolia, to a certain extent.

Pan's Labyrinth

Her (not because it's so beautiful, because ironically, I feel like t really captures what it means to be human, and it shows the nature of intimacy).

The original Solaris

Waltz with Bashir (it has a very particular animation style, and it's very much not the kind of animation for children)

Spirited Away because omg that movie just captures the concept of childhood al believing in magic o beautifully (honorable mention there, also: Ponyo)

I'm sure there' more but off the top of my head.

Maybe a little unpopular, but I was awed at Interstellar. The space was gorgeous of course, and while I pegged the big plot point pretty early on, the science wasn't impossible to follow, and I found it pretty heartfelt.

& Hero - I can't say much without giving it away, but it is beautiful and if you can watch it, do so.

I saw Mad Max: Fury Road in theaters four or five times and I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Also, Beasts of the Southern Wild.

So last year we had Dope and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl come out on the same day, and while I saw Dope and thought it pretty good, I really adored the latter one when I saw it this year.

Someone telling a young kid 'No one likes your damn cynicism' and having him get over it to help his friend.

Beasts of No Nation....but not in a good way, understandably. Still can't believe it wasn't nominated for any Oscars (it was released in eligible theaters in Los Angeles county) and one excuse I heard was that "It was too hard to watch."

You know what else wasn't a walk in the park that got best picture and best actress nominations? Room.

Lion King. Star Wars (all of them really, but especially the first one). All the LOTR movies, but especially Fellowship.

did you know Wentworth Miller is actually an amazing writer? he submitted the script anonymously and people were pretty shocked, SHOCKED I TELL YOU, when it turned out it was his work

Godfather II
a cliche choice? maybe. it's a classic for a reason.
I hadn't actually seen the first movie when I watched this and I was still blown away

seconding Mad Max: Fury Road, best action film I've ever seen

I get a chance to see Seven Samurai on the big screen later this month.

Sicario. I'd never heard of it until it showed up on DVD and the cast was too good to pass up. I was blown away by what an amazing film it was and the absolutely perfect ending.

About Time was not what I expected it to be at all.

Mad Max: Fury Road. I know other people have already said it but goddamn. It deserved the hype.

Mulan. I remember the first time I saw it I walked out of the room with this feeling like I could do anything I wanted to do and I didn't have to be good at being a girl to do it. Nobody had ever told me that before. It blew my tiny brain.

Jurassic Park.

I was a kid and going "Wow, an ACTUAL Dinosaur! That's so cool!" I knew that they weren't real obviously, but before that, all I saw were robot Dinosaurs, or the silly looking "lizards with cardboard fins on their backs" kinds. Seeing a realistically rendered, accurate at the time Dinosaur was just really freaking awesome. It still looks great, even today.

2001: A Space Odyssey. I saw it when I was pretty young so 99% of it went over my head, but the sheer power of the images and music just blew me away.

Fight Club, but mainly because I didn't know anything about the movie when I rented it. (Lol, back in the day.)

The ending of The Talented Mr. Ripley. I love the whole movie, but the ending is perfect, and so heartbreaking, and so chilling.

Memento, to some degree.

There's this obscure Canadian apocalypse movie called Last Night. I had no idea what it was when I started watching it and it was really powerful to me. But I'm not sure whether it would hold up on a rewatch.

Pride and Prejudice (the movie, not the miniseries). I love the story, but I think it's mainly the cinematography that really moves me. It's such a gorgeous, sensuous, pleasure to watch. (Yeah yeah, some of you hate it, that's your prerogative, you'll simply never change my mind on the matter.)
