What's something people compliment you on...

(Anonymous) 2016-09-18 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
that in reality you wish you could change about yourself?

Re: What's something people compliment you on...

(Anonymous) 2016-09-18 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't want to change things because I don't want to be less smart, but I really wish people would stop calling me smart all the time. I feel like the expectations are higher for me than people around me who don't get called smart all the time, and I'm not allowed to fail. If I do fail, I feel I have to feel bad about it and work harder to fix it. Also, I was never the top of my class or prone to amazing bursts of genius or creativity, so I don't understand where everyone is getting their basis for comparison from.

I totally understand this one.

This was me all through high school. People acted like I was some kind of genius and it was really weird because I don't know where they got that idea and it put a lot of pressure on me. I literally had someone gasp in shock once when I answered a question wrong. It sounds like I'm making that up but I swear I'm not. I have no idea how things got that ridiculous.

Yeah, I know I have a high IQ - but when people say this it usually does not bode well. Either it means they want something from me, or that the think I'm stuck up (which has more to do with the fact I'm an introvert and keep to myself).

I also get this pretty frequently and I really don't like it.

It's mostly because I prepared, you know? I read that article. I thought of something to say before we held this meeting. I did the research and I did the homework and now I feel like I can confidently speak about a topic. When you bother to do that it just gets stupidly easy to put two and two together. It's seriously the rarest thing ever for me to be providing an answer because I thought it up on the spot and it was correct.

I get really bothered by people implying or outright calling me a genius because of it. I'm really not. It also implies that what I'm doing isn't due to hard work because being a "genius" means you must be effortlessly intelligent.

This seriously could not be further from the truth.

*high five* me too! Although at this stage in my life it's less smart (because everyone in my grad program is) and more being in control. We were having an organizational meeting for a group I'm in and talking about titles and a bunch of people were joking that I should be sergeant-at-arms because I'm so on top of things and commanding, and I know it was meant as a compliment but inside I was like "Ha ha, good thing I'm not crying every night over my future job situation, OH WAIT."

My telephone voice/manner.

Also, people want me with them when they have to do something tough. Not because they think I'll be supportive, but because it'll intimidate the other person into treating them better. Apparently I'm scary AF and can use it for good. Or evil. 0.~

"You look so young!"

in b4 "you'll appreciate it when you're older" from people who think they're older than me, but not

Re: What's something people compliment you on...

(Anonymous) 2016-09-18 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I am "older" now and I still don't appreciate it.

I get that, too. I don't dye over my gray (which actually started coming in kind of early, anyway - it's just my face that looks young) because I got tired of being treated like I'm new to my line of work or having references to 80s movies explained to me by people my own age.

Oh god, yeah, it's such a pain in the ass. I'm finally seeing my first few grays and some wrinkles around my eyes and I'm so excited for it because MAYBE people will stop mistaking me for a teenager.

client: "Excuse me, sir, can I speak to the owner?"
me, dead inside: "I am the owner."

I hate that, especially when it comes to having kids or drinking.

Person: "Oh, you'll want to when you're older!"

Me: "...I'm 30. How much older do I have to be before I want to?"

Person: "*gasp!* I though you were a teenager! Oh well..."

I guess carrying my weight well/dressing well for a fat girl. Like, I know I present well, but I still wish I was average-sized.

I think "You look good [in spite of thing]" is always a back-handed compliment, even if it's not intended that way. There's no reason people can't just say "You look good today!" and leave qualifiers like age or weight out of it.

I've gotten compliments on my voice, but I'm a pretty typical person who cringes whenever I hear a recording of myself.

I really get this. It's especially grating because voices are really important to me and I care a lot about them (and voices that annoy me greatly make it hard for me to warm up to a person) so every time I hear a recording of my voice, I get upset because I find it kind of unpleasant. I wish my voice would actually sound like I hear it myself...

You never hear your own voice the way the outside world hears it because you're listening to it through your skull.

people say they're cute but they don't match the rest of my (masculine) body

also, I have a... kind of... a hand fetish? and I like looong and slim fingers

Pretty face and cute boobs. Though people have toned down on the boobs since I bind them, but still no progress on the face.

That I'm so lucky to be self-employed/own my own business and gosh I'm so smart/motivated/talented to be able to do so.

No. No I'm not. Self-employment is not the magic solution to a shitty job market, it is literally the only thing I can do so I'm not homeless right now and I absolutely do not get paid for 90% of the work I actually do to keep the business afloat. It's not smart and it's sure as hell not motivating. Talent doesn't actually put bread on the table.

"I wish I could have pretty thick hair like yours!"

Not when it's 90 plus degrees in the summertime, you won't :p. I don't hate my thick hair, really, but it can be a real nuisance sometimes, and I kinda wouldn't mind having it a little thinner and less...frizzy sometimes.

People compliment my accent sometimes. Mostly I find it frustrating because obviously if I have a noticeable accent I've failed at sounding fluent/native, and not being able to sound American means lots of people have a very hard time understanding me and I have a hard time understanding them. And it gets REALLY bad when I'm dealing with other ESL people and we're talking at eachother and not understanding each other at all.

Also it just kind of pours salt in an old wound, that I don't speak either language very well. People ask, you know, "how do you say whatever in your language? :D" and it's really embarrassing to say that I don't really know the word for that, or I'm not sure if my grammar is right.
