That IS extremely weird.

Was swearing a big deal in your family when you were growing up? I know a couple of friends of mine are uncomfortable with it because they got in tons of trouble if they swore, so that just sort of carried over to adult life.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-04 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You would not be able to talk to me then, I swear a lot.

Unless something is outwardly offensive against a particular group, I don't see the issue with swearing. They are just words.

Plus (warning to OP I am about to swear....) fuck is just a great word. So versatile.

Fuck actually doesn't bother me that much. It is more offensive swears like sexist, racist, or homophobic things.

I wouldn't say swearing squicks me out of a movie or something like that at all, but swearing also comes across as kind of tryhard for me a lot of the time. Like, it's difficult for me to find a time when it feels natural and doesn't just sound like a bunch of idiots talking, or script-writers inserting as many swear words into it as possible in an attempt to make it sound hip and contemporary. So I guess less is more, for me, unless the writing is good enough to make it feel natural.

I more or less feel the same about people who swear excessively in real life, lol. It doesn't offend me, but it does come across as tryhard.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-04 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
How is it tryhard IRL if that's the way a person naturally speaks?

Like I guarantee when I am swearing I'm not trying anything, I have to try to NOT swear because it's so naturally in my vocabulary I don't even realize I'm doing it half the time.

NAYRT

As someone who never swore growing up because my Dad didn't like it, I now have to refrain from swearing when I'm at their place because nearly EVERYONE at my work swears and it has me swearing like a sailor without conscious thought.

I felt bad because we had some students recently and I felt like they were gonna go back and be all, "And the number one thing I learned at [Hospital] was new and inventive combinations of swearwords." XD

Well I mean, if it's how someone naturally speaks, it's how they naturally speak. Mentally, I equate it with people who say "like" all the time.

Same and same.

[As an aside: I swear a lot more when I write on the internet than in any other venue of communication. Maybe because it communicates emphasis better than HTML tags?]

When people frequently use a lot of profanity IRL, it doesn't ~offend me so much as it makes me want to say, "It's okay, you can relax."

I do, too! I think in my case it's that I just feel more comfortable writing it than saying it aloud I do swear occasionally in real life (like when I bang up a body part or when I'm having a particularly bad day or whatever), but for some reason I just feel weird saying swear words aloud a lot of the time.

As for other people swearing, it doesn't bother me. It's a little jarring sometimes to hear every other word out of somebody's mouth being a cuss word (and depending on the context it can read as somebody trying to sound tougher than they really are), but if that's how other people talk, then...*Shrugs*. To each their own.

On a similarly related note, I also think bleeping out swear words in TV shows or movies is so ridiculous. Either show the movie/show uncensored or don't show it at all, the stuff they substitute in just sounds so stupid and weakens the impact the original swear word had on the scene/line.

I once asked someone why they were against movies with a lot of swearing but were fine with violence. She said it was because the violence isn't real and isn't being done to the audience, but the audience really is forced to hear the swearing.

That's an interesting distinction.

It's a little bit like how I can't stand voyeuristic camera behavior, because I feel like I'm being "forced" to look at something I wouldn't naturally.

[personal profile] sarillia 2017-01-05 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was interesting too. And I'm with you on the voyeuristic camera views.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Flawed allegory. The swearing isn't directed at the audience.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't get it either. The audience is "forced" to be a witness to the violence as much as they're "forced" to hear the swearing. It's a peculiar argument to me.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-04 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been swearing since I could talk (rule in my house was if I heard it I could say it) so this is so surreal to me.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
My dad when I was about six, bursting into the kitchen and bellowing "where'd she fucking learn to swear?!" because I said fuck.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT - LMAO! It's amazing how clueless some people are. Kids are sponges, they'll parrot anything they even think they hear. And since kids have no understanding of most words initially, them repeating certain things is rarely their fault.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorta the same. It depends on the script and the actor though. Some movies and shows can use profanity and it just seems to fit and others it seems so forced, like a 12yr old's bad fanfic where they imagine people swear all the time regardless of place or profession.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone has their own quirks and pet peeves, yours just happens to be swearing!

I'm starting to dislike excessive swearing myself these days. I used to have a terrible potty mouth, but this summer I was waiting in line at a drive-thru with the windows down, listening to two women in the car behind me complaining about their boyfriends and a good 83% of their conversation was made up of some variations of the words "bitch," "ass," and "fuck." They sounded like complete morons. I realized I probably didn't sound much different, so I stopped swearing entirely. It's been a fun challenge and the longer I do it, the less I like hearing other people swear. I mean, they can talk however they want, obvs, and somehow I find the strength to live on, but they really do sound so stupid.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
You're brave. Just wait for all the judgement about to fall on you as snobby, prescriptive, racist, classist, ableist probably, because making those assumptions about you, well that's apparently fine, but no way can anyone judge people for swearing, because Reasons.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
For me it depends on exactly how much swearing there is. Ten, fifteen, maybe even twenty swear words over the course of a film probably won't put me off. I'd say I actually prefer it when there's a little bit of swearing (say five words or less), as opposed to none.

But if it's the kind of film where every fifth word out of a characters mouth is a swear word, that definitely puts me off. I think I've mostly seen that kind of swearing in, like, crime movies, mob movies, dirty cop movies - where it's supposed to be "gritty" and "realistic." And, I mean, maybe it is realistic within that context. But I still find it really unpleasant to listen to.

blah blah blah...

The bulge in those pants! I saw the movie in a theater and didn't notice! I feel bereft now. ;_;

Swearing for me is a sort of aural poison, so I know where you're coming from, OP. When people do it a lot I construe it as an act of hostility or disrespect whether or not it was intended that way. For whatever reason though, it bothers me when I'm watching things, but not reading them.
