same here!! even though i've been a srz bznz metal gear solid fan for ages - i just never though of slash up until that secret (lol, it was weird, you know? who knew about fandom back in the day...). and i also have to say that i spent a good amount of time trying to find the original pic used in that secret!
too bad i didn't find many fics though - let alone lj comms. so, anon, if you find any fic worth sharing (or any website/community!), please feel welcome to do so :D

Way to be a hypocrite there with the hate-mongering, anon.

Exaaaactly what I was thinking.

13: I don't read meta because I think it's going to save the world. I read meta because it's fun. If it's not fun for you -- fine! Don't read it! But don't begrudge us overeducated intellectual types our little games of spot-the-misplaced-symbolism and whatnot.

...also, I was around in fandom before blogging, and man, you are so wrong. LJ in particular has made so much possible in the way of things like fic exchanges, challenges, recommendations, and just generally spreading information and sharing opinions quickly... these things existed before, but LJ made them much, much easier. And the social networking aspect of LJ sped up the process of making friends with fandom people as opposed to just liking what they write. Fandom is bigger and better because of LJ.

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-05-12 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
31. Wow, that's...wow. That's really heavy. ._. I don't really know what to say...it's really tragic for everyone involved. But I'm sorry that happened to you.

37. I'm always late to fandoms, too. XD;; It's...sort of a silly secret, but I guess I can understand how gratifying it'd be to say you were into something from the beginning.

46. You gotta be kidding. There's no way nobody would know who Kenshin was. XD; Most of the people I know would recognize him, even if they never saw the show...

47. It's kinda cute. Not something I'd really watch by choice (I worked at a daycare so I kinda got forced to watch it one day when another employee brought it in), but I don't think it's horrible, particularly if it serves as a "gateway drug" to other, better musicals.

48. ...I think that's a silly thing to get so worked up over. ^^;

57. I honestly only watch Bleach these days to hear Ken's dub voice. I get disappointed anytime Ishida doesn't show up. So, uh, I know how you feel?

61. Those shows aren't about love, they're about boosting the careers of nearly-forgotton pop icons. XD;; But they're GREAT for clips for The Soup, so I'm still glad they're around.

63. ...I was homeschooled and I think I have a bigger sense of identity than I would if I went to regular school. ^^; That being said, I was in a homeschool group AND church as well as sports and music on top of it, so that might've helped...I dunno. x.x;; ...This is sort of needless, I guess, I'm just worried of people thinking we're all horribly screwed up by being homeschooled, I guess. ^^;

70. I have a tendency to be much more forgiving than the rest of the fandom, so sometimes i feel that way, too. XD; LIke "Wait, hold on, am I not smart enough to notice how horrible it is...?"

I love House. I'm open to new friends. I promise I'm not conceited. I don't write fanfic, but I do make art. Although a lot of my fanart is not House-related, I will be working on a few pieces sometime in the future :)

Re: 69

[identity profile] foxestacado.livejournal.com 2008-05-12 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
And I'm scared by the fandom too. I organize a pretty good, well-branched network of fic recs on my website, which is very well received by The X-Files fans and Harry Potter fans, but when I introduced my rec list to House fans, major drama ensued. I was like, "dude, people, chill. It's a rec list. I'm sorry if there's not enough Foreman/Chase stories, or Cameron/Foreman stories, but...I'm working on it, okay?"[/mini rant]

46. As someone who's spent this weekend rereading YYH and loving every minute of it: Yesssss. Not that there aren't good current titles, but some of the older ones are fantastic. I'd hate to see them forgotten.

48. Emphatically seconded.

62. Of course shounen doesn't give a shit about the source material. It's practically a genre requirement. If you don't like it, why are you reading shounen?

The genre's never been about realistic portrayals of ninja or the mafia or pirates or whatever. Those have always just been there to give flavor to the background. Shounen's about the tropes played out against that background.

46 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-05-13 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
YYH was/is the BOMB.

[identity profile] weaselistic.livejournal.com 2008-05-12 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
11. I... still have not read more than five chapters of this, although I really want to. If only the series was released in Germany... or France, that would probably be better, quality-wise. I sorta don't want to import Viz manga. :/
But you're right in any case. Why does this manga get so little attention? I seldom ever come across someone who even knows it.

23. The word "fugly" is so freaking overused. So, "small beauty flaw = fugly"? I guess we're all fugly then. Can we maybe reserve the term for things like klingons with acne?

29. You're not alone there. I miss Jet. I still feel guilty because he died the week after I got into Avatar. :( Jet/Zuko was probably too canon to be allowed to continue.

46. Comes across a bit snobbish. I mean... it's normal that onoing series get more active fandoms and more attention from new fans than finished ones, it's normal that people know the series released during their own time in the fandom better than he series released fifteen years earlier (when they were possibly not even born yet)...
And this "remember your roots" is just dwamatic. "Jump reader" isn't my identity.

46 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-05-13 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry...I was kind of mad when I wrote it...because no one at the con I went to knew who Kenshin was.

I didn't mean to come off like a snob. I like Naruto and Bleach, and Hunter x Hunter as well. I just want people to remember that the old series existed.

When I was your age, I had to walk five miles to get to slash, up hill, in the rain! And a decent Uhura cosplay cost a dollar eighty-two, and that was high quality.

56. I'm so afraid that you're talking to me. My god. Even if you aren't, I'd like to apologize. Apologize on behalf of all asshole RPers who dick before they think. It's been almost a year and a half since I was on the other end of your periscope, and believe me, if your RP partner is at all a good person, it burns and burns and burns for as long as you remember it.

And if it is you, again, I am so, so sorry.

(Anonymous) 2008-09-19 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's alright. I can't really say that I myself haven't been an asshole to some RPers. What I can say is that I've learned to get across whatever the person's done and go on knowing that not all the RPers I'll encounter are going to be all candy and butterflies BFFs. Despite this, I'm not holding a grudge against the person any more, whether he/she/it knows it or not.

And if it's you too, it's okay. Really.

1. Agreed inasmuch as large-breast fetishism is utterly meaningless to me and not representative of actual female forms.

7. I really want to play that game... but I have too many games right now that are neither started nor finished.

15. Agreed, inasmuch as I don't believe Ebichu is female at all either.

35. Agreed. I wish he'd hooked up with SOMEBODY during the course of the series instead of mooning at four different girls.

39. Signed.

13. Well, if by 'get a life', you mean 'also put your theory into practice wherever you can' as opposed to 'just shut up', then I agree with you. But I find that lots of people who write reams of earnest meta about social issues in their favorite shows are also materially engaged in politics, social work, and activism. It's not an either/or--once you see the world in general from a certain ethical standpoint, ~*~you cannot unsee it~*~. And there is no turning off your critical faculties/your social conscience once you get them working.

45. 'Him'?

62. ...Hitman Reborn! is actually about hitmen? I did not know that. /slowpoke.jpg

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
45. Ritsu Sohma from Fruits Basket. XD He's hilarious too. Dresses as a girl (I forget why, orz) and seems very quiet and reserved... until he thinks he even MIGHT have done something wrong and then FLIPS OUT APOLOGIES FOREVER ABOUT EVERYTHING I'M SO SORRY AUUUUGH. I don't think there was a moment when he was on screen that I wasn't cracking up. XD

62. H-Hitman Reborn is about a fourteen year old FAIL KID named Tsunayoshi "No Good Tsuna" Sawada, who gets approached by a magical talking infant one day who tells him, congrats, I'm your home tutor, I'm a hitman with the mafia, and you're the next boss of the Vongola famiglia WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT, KID, NOW SIT STILL AND LET ME SHOOT YOU. In the head. To bring out your ulta shounen superpowered "Dying Will."

Y-yes in fact it IS just as retarded as it sounds, but I mean that in a REALLY GOOD WAY. I lol at secrets like this because the series starts out entirely humorous anyway, was never meant to be AN ACCURATE REPRESENTATION OF THE MAFIA OMGZ, and it's... just meant to be a fun, character-driven series, and the characters are really loveable. One of the main villains of the second arc has a canonical character song called Kufufu no Fu in which he talks about the ~*~ETERNAL SAMBA~*~ so I don't see how so many people can apparently think the series should be SRS BSNS. XD;

Non tl;dr version it's really worth looking into despite the amazing number of non-fans who go OMG THIS SERIES IS SO RIDICULOUS OMG. As long as you can handle a ton of chapters with no plot whatsoever before getting to the point where anything happens. XD

[identity profile] srsfnbsns.livejournal.com 2008-05-12 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
11. I'm really sick and tired of these secrets. "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh!!!!!!!!!! The thing I like isn't appreciated enough! Validate meeeeeeeeeee!" If people like it, fine, if people don't like it, that's ok too. Not everyone likes the same things. A large fandom is not a sign of quality.

13. I avoid most meta. It's a bunch of pretentious BS. I like to just be a fan, while occasionally discussing fandom with a few friends, but I'm not going to write some giant BS post about how smart I am.

43. Reading fandom secrets is like entering the dark underbelly of fandom. All the not nice stuff comes out. This is not the best place to learn what fandom is all about. If you think it is, you're not as smart as you seem to think you are.

53. I always wonder when Disney is going to snatch that girl up. If they don't, I will be very disappointed.

62. Word.

72. >_> I love that series. It's so cavity inducing.

(Anonymous) 2008-05-12 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
11. I think there's a difference between "not a large fandom" and "no fandom at all". I find it annoying, too, when people whine that there are "only" 250 fanfics in their fandom, while there are manga where you really have to search hard in order to even find another person (singular) who likes the series and is interested in talking about it with you, discuss new chapters, come up with theories, meta, jokes...

This can be very frustrating, and it's perfectly fine to be sad about this state.
And it's also perfectly fine to keep/make it a secret that something is making you sad - when you know that there are enough people like you, who would give you shit about it.

12 - Honestly most of my fandom experience is reading and commenting on fic. (Occasionally I write some.) And sometimes getting into discussions in communities, mostly the smaller ones, like Dexter. For the larger fandoms, I generally discuss with my flist. It's easier to be a contributing member in smaller comms or forums, whether it's for a smaller fandom or a comm that's for a specific type of fanwork (whether it be specific characters/pairings, meta, etc.)

14 - You don't have any respect for people due to one opinion they hold? Fandom makes no sense to me sometimes.

23 - She does have a large mouth. I think that women are generally able to work larger mouths better than men are though, so I think she's still quite attractive. (Not that it should matter whether or not I find her attractive.)

33 - David Caruso does not deserve Nigel. He talks too slowly and dramatically. Nigel deserves someone from a better series.

45 - Mmmmm, apology kink. "I-I'll try harder to improve next time! Except you probably don't want there to be a next time b-because I was so terrible this time and I'm sorry for even suggesting-"

47 - I think most of the HSM fans like it because it's so terribly cheesy.

70 - It takes me a while to clue into racism, sexism, etc. in my shows. I generally start seeing it more when I observe fandom.

Not OP, but

(Anonymous) 2008-05-12 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have any respect for people due to one opinion they hold?

Well... yes. If someone is of the opinion that homosexuals should not be allowed to exist, then I respect them less. If someone is of the opinion that one religion/race/flavour of ice cream is morally superior, then I respect them less.

Granted, which fictional characters you like is a really stupid thing to judge people by. OP is an idiot.

37. Five bucks on Soul Eater. If that show isn't the next big thing I'm gonna eat both my shoes. (I do hope it's Soul Eater; it's only been five episodes and I already need my Maka/Soul fix. Also Death the Kid/gun chicks threesome = A+++)

54. That's what you get for, well, playing videogames. Especially Japanese ones. By JRPG standards, I found Yukari to be pretty okay.

62. Probably. Most of the long-running epic shounen stuff tends to generally suck after a while. It's not just Reborn... the lot of it comes off as 'same fights, new universe and characters' while you rehash the same themes about competition and friendship and teamwork or whatever over and over again.

It can be enjoyable, but I can't see it as any more than shallow entertainment.

But their being naked would only ACCENTUATE the asymmetry of their breasts and Death COULD NOT HANDLE THAT. But no, seriously, I totally agree.
