I felt it was very clear, but I'd also like some more not explicit, but blatant relationship stuff in S2. I suspect S2 will focus more on Yurio growing up, however.

Have you looked at the "official fan art?" I'm not sure what it's actually called, but it's all over tumblr. There's some pretty romance-y sweet stuff there.

I highly doubt that. They're going to want to go where the money leads, and Yuuri and Victor are far more popular characters in Japanese fandom than Yurio is.

Yeah, gotta be honest, I don't see the point in focusing on Yurio P. as a protagonist. He won the last competition. Not that he doesn't have any goals left, but what would be that compelling about watching him? Plus, I think he was pretty well developed in the first season, for the tertiary lead he got loads of screen time. I actually felt he got more comprehensive development than even Yuri and Victor did. Not that Yuri and Victor were badly written but it kind of felt like a lot of who they were was happening off camera, and I don't feel their stories are done yet. Yurio certainly has room to grow, but I don't think he'd be a particularly exciting protagonist.

Ayrt. I hope you're right bc honestly I find him a little dull at times. He's kinda one note and wouldn't carry the narrative well. And he's really too young and immature to have his own romance yet, IMO.

Interesting because I have heard he is the most fully fleshed out character. I have seen the 'one note' criticism of the white haired guy on my dash a few times.

Yurio and Victor (the white-haired guy) are polarizing to a small part of the fandom. Most of the fans I know are the "thinks everyone's great" type, but if someone thinks Victor is the least interesting character then it's usually a given that Yurio is their favorite, and vice versa.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but while he's not a dull character, he's definitely not the most fleshed out, either. He functions quite a bit on being a hostile tsundere, and while he's got development and layers and all, he's still largely a bit of the "unnecessarily angry teenager" stereotype.

Victor doesn't seem one-note to me, but he also didn't seem to undergo any vast personality change or character dissection either. He has a few more emotional character moments and some explanation of his motivations, and I think he reveals more character than critics like to claim, but I also don't think he was totally explained as a person. It felt like there was a lot left unrevealed, whether intentional or not, so if there is a season 2 I'd hope it would look more deeply at him.

Yep, white haired guy is pretty one dimensional and one note, but he's charming and likable. It's only that for the amount of screentime he recieved, he ended up being just an okay character.

Yurio on the other hand had very little screentime compared to the other two but the show did a great job with that screentime.

I don't think Yurio had very little screen time. I'd say he featured possibly more than Victor. Every episode shot back to him and what he was doing. He was constantly there.

The funny thing about people complaining about their lack of development or them being one note is that the three mains (Yuuri, Yuri, and Victor) had the same start point and development: they felt alone and during the show they started to open themselves to others.

By meeting new people and acknowledging everyone around they grew, learned, and not being alone motivated them.

They themselves didn't change much, but how they relate to others did.

I hope he's the main character and that there's no romance so all the people watching the show for gay shipping reasons drop it.

I agree, Yurio has a lot of growing up to do personality-wise still. If I were to guess, I feel the show set up for him to get an injury somehow - doing quads before he was old enough, constantly pushing himself way too hard when his stamina is not very good, etc. There's no point in the narrative having him win gold again, after all, so I think an injury is within the realm of possibility.

I haven't checked any of the official artwork lately! I'll check it out, thanks!

Kubo has said she doesn't particularly like injuring characters (though she had considered it), but--- yeah I kind of agree that something like this would be a good narrative for him. I don't want to say he needs 'humbling' because it seems kind of mean to say about a kid, but he does need a storyline that I think tells him to slow down a bit?? It's not particularly good for him, and I think it's harmful in the long run.

It might not be an injury; it could just be him adjusting to his body changing, which was hinted at in the first season, but it should be something, I think, as his character arc in the inevitable season two.

And with Victor and Yuuri both competing, it would make sense to have one of the main three sort of 'out of competition', just as Victor wasn't competing in season one (albeit for a very different reason).

But agreed with the above comment that the show will absolutely not focus on Yurio more than Yuuri and Victor. First off, they've outright said he doesn't work well as a protagonist for the kind of story they want to tell, and secondly... yeah the popularity thing.

That's interesting, I haven't been keeping with the Kubo/creators interviews and official comments and such. I do admit I think Yurio needs to be "humbled" just a bit. While I think how he pushes himself and his mad dash for success is really interesting to watch, he's also a little asshole over the vast majority of the season, and he's only 15 so theoretically has plenty of time to remain competitive. Not trying to say I dislike Yurio's character, because I don't, I just think the storyline would be more interesting if we see his fall, or at least some other major setback or limitation to his talent.

One of my favorite scenes though is early on in the show, I think it's when Yuri and Yurio are training to compete at the Hasetsu ice castle and there's this really lovely but powerful montage with Yuri saying he doesn't know how much longer his body will hold out, and figure skaters are only competitive for a short period. Then you see their feet covered in bruises, and it's like, oh shit. That's why I think it'd be interesting to injure a character (preferably Yurio, who I think is the best set up for that storyline, or else an older character who pushes themselves beyond their physical limits... possibly Victor?)

I am glad that they don't intend to focus solely on Yurio though. He's interesting, but not more interesting than Yuri. Plus, Yuri is easy to like. It'd be hard to follow Yurio around because his personality is really bratty, which is acceptable for side characters but irredeemable for protagonists.

" I suspect S2 will focus more on Yurio growing up"

If only. He's way more interesting than muh anxiety and Manic Pixie Dream Bald Guy.
