I agree that the plot of the first Ghost In The Shell movie is somewhat slight, but I think it's pretty good despite that, mostly because it's an extremely good execution of a very specific aesthetic and style and is reasonably smart about dealing with some fairly complex issues. Plus it's the most famous piece of a broader franchise that also has many other good things going for it so you have that.

But I can actually kinda get why watching the original movie might not be that impressive for some people in 2017, the aesthetic stuff maybe isn't as powerful as it once was. IDK.
