I think the problem with vague secrets is that it doesn't always feel universal, sometimes it can but other times it's just hard to really comment when you don't have any clue what OP is talking about.

Just knowing a fandom can open up the conversation a lot because even if someone disagrees with you, they'll have more of a clue about what you're saying.

Valid points, but often vague secrets come across like blind gossip items.

These are all really good reasons for keeping your secret vague, I just get a little sad because sometimes the secret makes me want to check out the series and/or the fandom. And I can't haha.

I feel like being "fandom outed" is really not a reality anymore. This comm is too far removed from fandom spaces now. Maaaybe back when fandom actually was on LJ and whatnot, but on tumblr? Sorry, I really doubt there's a chance someone from your fandom is here, unless you are already friends.

I find vague secrets a little... blah just because what are we supposed to talk about? Except for "what fandom is this?". But I mean, if you enjoy making them, by all means.

OP

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I know for a fact that there are anons here who are into my fandoms and/or ships, some of them relatively small. I'm also something of a BNF in one of those fandoms so I could be fandom-outed pretty easily.

For what it's worth, I try to have a valid complaint in my vague secrets that can be related to other fandoms. (In fact there have been some fandom guesses on my vague secrets that let me know that other fandoms do indeed have these exact same issues.)

Sometimes though, I just want to vent and I don't want to have to worry about it getting around. :(

I get that, sometimes secrets are a fun way to vent because they utilize more creative energy than just venting in the general comments or something. I also definitely don't think the fandom is always necessary, because so many complaints are relatable across many fandoms.

But sometimes I see secrets that seem to like... want us to try to guess the fandom/series/whatever, and I don't get why they just didn't say so in the first place. But hey, the secrets are still totally valid as long as the person making them is having fun, not all secrets have to be made with the intent of entertaining the masses.

OP

I don't do the whole "picture related" thing where it seems to be like "haha guess". If that's what you're talking about, I promise those types of secrets aren't mine.I just write my complaints in a vague way, or sometimes say "character X", "character Y", that sort of thing. Sometimes I just need to vent about a certain fandom trend that's happening at that moment but I don't want to the to thread derail if I reveal the actual fandom because it will inevitably start people wanking.

Same here. Some of my ships I'm one of two writers or the only writer with any fic for them, period.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I have friends who subscribe to this comm. Maybe they read it every day, maybe they don't - I have no idea! And they have no idea that I submit secrets for it, AFAIK. I'd like to keep it that way.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Vague secrets are often annoying, because they feel like the OP is pulling one of those horribly annoying moves like acting all sulky and saying vague shit about some situation, because they want you to ask them questions about it. (In this case, "What fandom?")

People can post whatever kind of secret they want, but it would be cool if vague OPs who were vague for a specific reason could say something like, "I'm being vague because I don't want to be outed" in their secret, so as to cut the annoyance off at the pass, so to speak.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
Or perhaps you could just assume that the OP isn't making vague secret just to spite you? I mean really, it's kind of nuts to assume that the OP is being a jerk just for the lulz and even more nuts to act like it's their responsibility to convince you that your (slightly paranoid) assumption about them is incorrect.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

I've seen multiple discussion threads for vague secrets in which the OP is all over the thread responding to the guesses: "Nope, not that fandom," "Not that one either," "Ding-ding-ding! We have a winner!" They may not be doing it ~for the lulz, but they're obviously 1) willing/able to disclose the fandom, and 2) seeing some kind of benefit out of not just naming the fandom in the secret.

And I'm with the AYRT and find it really annoying when people do that.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's a little "Well if you don't know what fandom's doing wrong, I'm not going to tell you," isn't it? Stop being passive-aggressive, vague secret makers!

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes the secret is so vague that it's not really relatable to anyone. It's one thing to post something like "I hate when the "friends" who do nothing but bicker turn out to be the end game ship" without specifying which specific couple got your knickers in a twist. But if all you're going to say is "If my fandom knew how I really felt about the canon ship, they'd never forgive me," then don't bother. Or if you must, at least include a Chinese lesson and my lucky numbers so I can get some good out of it.

OP

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Those types of secrets definitely aren't mine. I write pretty long and detailed secrets, and my vague complaints are about something that can be applied to other fandoms too. I've actually only gotten a few "why the vagueness?" type complaints on mine because usually everybody is actually talking about the actual content of the secret.

When I say "vague" I guess I'm more saying that sometimes I write about specific situations that happen in a lot of fandoms but I'm just not revealing the exact ship and/or fandom that inspired the secret.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
There's no purpose in making a vague secret.

Here's my secret: There's a thing that I don't like that involves some characters doing some things.

I mean, why should anybody care?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
You don't have to care, but it doesn't mean making vague secrets have no purpose. They have purpose to the person who makes them. You're free not to like them, but your efforts would probably be put to better use by making and submitting good, purposeful secrets instead of telling other people their secrets are pointless.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
So you're saying vague secret makers are egomaniacs who don't understand that the community isn't all about them. Fair enough, but they'd probably be more comfortable on a platform like Tumblr, where reciprocal interaction is not expected, if not actively discouraged.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, stop it. Don't like? Don't read.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Now you're just being silly. The whole point of the fandom secrets is that you're posting things for other people to read. If you're going to post "only for yourself," then you really should get your own space. No one has snagged vaguely_anonymous.tumblr.com or mostimportantfan.tumblr.com yet.

I honestly do feel a little bit better after reading your reasoning...

but i still hate vague secrets, I always feel like I'm missing the context. So all that's left is a feeling of frustration that you won't get closure for. I mean you can guess, but it'll still niggle at your mind because you'll never really know.

Hehe, it's actually kind of amusing when I type it all out like that. Vague secrets are such a tease xD

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it depends on the secret. Sometimes "I wish I liked the juggernaut pairing in my fandom." is better for discussion and people discussing their own experiences and pros and cons of liking the juggernaut vs. the rarer pairs.

"I wish I liked Stucky more than Steve/Sam so I'd have more fan content." is more likely to get "Cry moar, you ablest prick." or "You're one of those who only ships the POC for the morality points, ain'tcha?" and "But Stucky is SO GOOD, I ship it." and "Here's a detailed list of the reasons I just don't like Steve/Sam."

But at the same time when people start getting into "There's a person in my fandom who did a thing and I have feelings about it and it sucks. Picture not related because everyone will know who I'm talking about." then... yeah, that's just irritating.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
That's fair.

Honestly, I kind of like the detective game when there's a vaguely-related picture, and it always bums me out when the comments are filled with people getting super angry at a vague secret-maker and no one trying to figure it out.

Sometimes it would be nice if everyone's really stumped to have an OP come in and say 'it was X', like sometimes I do want to know, but often I feel like a group of people making educated guesses can come up with, if not the right answer, a plausible enough one to please me. And it's FUN sometimes to, like... try to figure out what a picture of a tiger might mean to different fandoms, or whatever.
