How to exercise

(Anonymous) 2017-05-24 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Everything I read seems to be geared on losing weight or entering a marathon. I just want to know what exercises I should do on a weekly basis to stay healthy.

Assuming you are in a sedentary type of employment.

Do a light jog every other day or so, maybe a mile at a slow pace (should only take you half an hour). A few stretches. Or a couple of miles cycling on the flat once or twice a week.

If it is just staying healthy then just something that gets you slightly out of breath and sweaty [insert sex joke here]. You don't need to do much, just get your heart rate up.

Thanks! Do you do any weightlifting? Any recommendations on that?

I don't, but if it is weight for general exercises then you want nothing heavier than five kilos. Two-three kilos and just do five to ten minutes of arm stretches holding the weights. You just want to feel your arms getting slightly tired and a bit warm. The general rule is you want to do smaller weights for longer times to build muscle tone and get the blood flowing, if you want bulky muscles do short bursts with heavy weights. But you don't want bulk, that just looks gross.

Okay, this answer is coming from someone who hates exercise and eating better, but also from someone who is trying to do both of those things:

--Set simple goals:
1. Did you eat a fruit today? Good!
2. Did you eat a veggie today? Good!
3. Did you drink caffeine/soda/coffee/etc? Try to cut back from every day to every other day to once a week...or until you think you're feeling better.
4. Did you exercise today?

--Exercise:
1. Don't tell yourself you're going to exercise every day for 2 hours. Start small. Exercise 3 days a week for half an hour. Even just walking around a mall or a grocery store is exercise!
2. It's amazing what little things count as exercise! Here are some examples that can really add up!:
--> Cleaning your house/Chores
--> Walking around your place of employment
--> Running errands
--> Lifting groceries
--> Moving furniture around
3. Find something you like to do! I like treadmills and bikes because I can watch my shows while getting in better shape. And when I weightlift, I like to listen to my favorite podcasts!
4. Or, if you don't want to join a gym, you can do stuff at home. Youtube and OnDemand and Netflix all have workout videos you can do. You can also buy some cheap equipment for home, like dumb bells and resistance bands.

--Keep track of what you eat and your exercise routines:
1. Lose It app. I absolutely love this app! It keeps track of everything for you!
2. Make yourself a chart. I use the app, but I also like to handwrite it too. There is something very satisfying about seeing all the days I get to fill with all the good things I'm doing for myself!

Walking every day for at least 20 minutes at a moderately brisk pace is probably one of the most effective and cheap ways to exercise.

There was a huge longitudinal study done a few years ago, which concluded that the benchmark amount of exercise needed to stay healthy was 150 minutes of walking a week.

Here is a great animated lecture explaining it all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUaInS6HIGo

I found this video very motivating when I was at my most couch-potato-like.

Just walking is great. I do a few sets of push-ups and crunches every day if I'm not doing heavy labor at work.

It just depends on what your goals are. If you can't speedwalk for 20 minutes without being seriously winded, do that. If you want to be able sprint a mile, work on that. If you just want to be able to walk up and down the stairs without huffing and puffing, start walking up and down the stairs a few times every day.

Weightlifting. Weightlifting is the best. It makes your bones stronger. You're gonna wanna want that when you're a hundred and five.
