I do

Totally irrational, BTW, but yeah, right there with you.

DA

I completely agree with all of this. And in fact, I would list Cap 1 as a movie I ended up liking way more than I thought I would. I kind of figured I'd like TWS (and yup, I loved it) but I held off so long on watching either movie because I kept expecting Cap 1 to be annoyingly bland or something. And then it was actually really good.

Seconding Edge of Tomorrow.

Re: This secret is really weird to me.

I don't mean to be rude but I do think we should raise the possibility that OP is just being less than entirely sincere.

Seconding this. For me, it could definitely have gone in the previous thread about movies that ended up being better than you expected.

Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. It's one of my favorite movies, and I have yet to stop pining for the sequels that will never come.

Me too, OP.

And that one pic doesn't even do her justice.

Eh, not really. I feel the same way about it that I do about a lot of things. I think it's failing for big picture reasons, not because of anything specific on my part or your part or any of our parts. There's no amount of comments or secrets that I could make that would stop it from dying. It's just the way things are. So I just post when I want to.

Captain Crab or THE DRAGONFLY.

Or maybe Captain Deep-Sea...

While I appreciate the school yard knee jerk response of 'No, you're the one with the basic empathy disconnect, stoopie head!', this is not a case where it applies.

I can describe the actions of someone as a 'basic empathy disconnect' while at the same time being able to empathise with them - in this case understanding that these people are seeing the outpouring of grief you describe, being confused by it as it doesn't align with their feelings, and then feeling uncomfortable because they seem out of step with what 'everyone else' seems to be feeling (which is not a laughing matter; social rejection is hardwired to be super distressing for humans). these feelings influence them to make a secret post about how they 'don't get it', both expressing their frustration and also looking for social validation in the form of people saying they feel the same way.

Whereas, if some of these posters had taken a second to reflect, they might have realised that the people expressing sorrow so visibly just had a particular emotional connection with the celebrity or their artwork that the secret posters might not share, but might be analogous to some other emotional connection the secret poster has to something different. So, you know, a basic empathy disconnect.

('Basic empathy disconnect' i.e. an instance of not being empathetic =/= 'incapable of empathy', fyi)

Re: What are some plot holes in movie and TV that still drive you crazy?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-26 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, the frogs were just stupid. (Would probably be the in-universe explanation, that is.)

(Anonymous) 2017-05-26 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
I get that someone might feel distressed if they feel out of step with what 'everyone else' seems to be feeling - i.e. anxious that they are are not empathetic enough. However, the irony of this situation is that if these used a bit of empathetic skills when thinking about why other people are acting this way, they might quickly realise that it's just that r\different people have different emotional connections to different things and that's okay. Anxiety completely alleviated!

Personal example: I was pretty sad when I heard that Bowie and Alan Rickman had died, because I really like both of their bodies of work. I was surprisingly gutted over Robin Williams' death - didn't quite realise how much of my childhood he figured in. I had no deep emotional reaction when I heard that Chris Cornell died, because I don't know his music at all. However, because I know how I felt about previous celebrity's deaths, know how it can feel to be really emotionally connected to music and also vaguely understand how big a presence Cornell was in the 90s grunge scene which was the background to a lot of people's formative years, I totally get how Cornell's death might be a huge emotional blow to his fans. I reacted differently to many other people and yet didn't feel the need to post a secret about it... crazy huh?

That was Stuart propaganda though. Nothing welcomes in a new boss like a play slating his family's historic enemies.

She definitely makes the show worth watching, such a brilliant, but underrated character.

So disappointed that he's got such an important role in Fantastic Beasts.

Okay, and?

It is atrocious, but that doesn't mean you can't find it entertaining.

Okay, now when you watch Shadowhunters, look for which characters were which Harry Potter characters from the fanfic.

ty, reading this thread was kind of bizarre. of all the shit he's done, "daring to look his age when there are actors his age who don't" is the one people take offence with?

Interestingly, I had a teacher in third grade whose surname was Lightfoot. To the best of my knowledge, she was not Native American.

Ed Wood was the high-water mark for both Depp and Burton. It's all been downhill since then...
