I can understand the aesthetic, but when I actually try to read it, it makes no sense. Unless the setting is a very loose backdrop or something, it's just really an odd genre.

I've never managed to get into it as a literary genre, but I think the whole "maker" aspect with the steampunk-ed motorcycles and computers and the costumes and props is awesome.

I love the aesthetic, but I wish authors would stop thinking it's enough to carry a story on its own. I really just want to read an actual good book (or watch a good movie) that happens to be steampunk.

Fantasy novels. I like fantasy movies but I just cannot get into reading fantasy.

Torture porn horror.

Well, horror in general because I hate jump scares, but I cannot for the life of me understand people who like gore and watching people slowly die in cruel ways.

Yeah I don't get the torture porn horror either and I like horror.

I can deal with gore but I also don't find it scary or interesting? It just feels unnecessary when it's excessive.

And torture is just like, I don't find that at all interesting to watch either.

I prefer horror that's more of a creepy story then anything else.

I can't stand a lot of gore at all. If you can't make a movie scary without overusing gore, you suck at making scary movies.

Dark comedy.

I don't like things labelled as comedy that are just depressing and don't have a single line or situation that makes me laugh. Like, being a sort-of quirky drama doesn't mean you're a comedy.

I've had this problem even though I do like dark comedies, but this is the fault of people labeling something a comedy when it's not at all that.

Like even a dark comedy SHOULD have jokes in it and make you laugh but I can't tell you how many times I've seen movies in the comedy category that are straight up dramas. It's really common if the main actor is known for comedies.

-Christian. I mean, I'm not Christian so there's that, but I've also never come across a Christian-genre story that was actually good. It feels like being as cringey as possible is the foundation of that genre.

-Sports. Because first, I'm not interested in sports and have no background in sports culture, and second because I just don't get how anyone but kids can get that invested in a game. Let alone enough to build an entire story around it.

-Romantic comedies. They never feel natural, plus, I'm not straight so I just don't have a lot of interest.

And most teenage High School dramas(unless they've got some kind of wacky supernatural shenanigans going on, then I can find them fun).

Paranormal romance.

Almost all monster hunter stuff. Especially if the monster hunter is also a monster. I'll make exceptions for Lukyanenko's Night Watch, although I'm kinda off reading any new material from him.

I tend to bounce off of big second-world epic fantasy these days. I think my last crack at it was Kameron Hurley's The Mirror Empire where I got a third of the way into it and couldn't keep track of which character from a half-dozen different plot threads came from which culture. Now that I think about, I'm getting increasingly annoyed by SFF publishing's love of "novels" that are not really novels, just exercises in going nowhere and doing nothing until a last-chapter cliffhanger to sell the next part of the series.

Paranormal romance. Any kind of romance, really. Especially romantic comedies, at least for the most part.

I don't mind if "romance" is a subplot of a larger story (see: Mercy Thompson and Kitty Norville and Jane Yellowrock), but if it's the focus, I'm just not interested.

I hate anime except for ATLA and I keep being told ATLA isn't really anime.
